According to Boris...he says over the next few weeks.
How much stricter can they get?! Except for school closures I mean.

Takeaways never closed in March, just some chose to mainly chain places. Doubt they'll close again this time. Lot of business to lose

notevenat20 · 03/01/2021 19:18

Couldn't they say you can leave the house once a day and have to carry a form explaining why you are doing it?

We don't have the police manpower to deal with the usual crime, let alone nonsense like this.
MaudesMum · 03/01/2021 19:27

It would be helpful to have an accurate analysis of where infections are currently happening. I'd put my money on it not being because of meetings in parks and gardens. It will be because of hospitals and other care settings; within the sort of workplaces that can't go remote (eg food processing, but also institutional settings such as prisons), multigenerational households and HMOs - and also schools. None of those - apart from schools - are going to be changed by a tougher lockdown - it will just make life shittier for the rest of us.

Delatron · 03/01/2021 21:39

Agree @MaudesMum
This virus is not spreading by outside walks and exercise. The government know this.

Do we really have many fewer police officers than the Spanish or French?

BlueBaubles12 · 03/01/2021 22:36

Unfortunately Boris is like a football manager who’s lost the dressing room. Back in March the restrictions had popular support and legitimacy. They policed themselves, because most people accepted they were proportionate and necessary. The same can’t be said now.

Spanish never had to carry a paper saying why they were out. And those fines that were handed most of them were never paid. As others have said it’s not in the park where numbers are arising but in places where the distance is not being kept
Delatron · 04/01/2021 08:07

I think it’s a divided nation right now. Some people refuse even to leave their house for fresh air. Some ranting on our local Facebook at how busy the parks are (how they would know unless they were there too?) demanding cafes shut for takeaway coffee.

Then others who’ve had enough of the rules and are maybe having people round when they shouldn’t. Allowing kids to meet up in groups seeing extended family. Drinks in the garden turn to drinks inside because it’s raining.

Lots in the middle but not enough compliance. The government can’t police this and if they don’t have enough compliance then it will spread. It’s households mixing mainly when they shouldn’t. Then hospitals, maybe a bit of public transport. Care homes, carers travelling in and out of homes. It’s not spread by people meeting another person in the park for a walk. Or people getting takeaway coffee.

EvilPea · 04/01/2021 08:28

Attitudes are very different to March meaning compliance is down with some people scratching round for loop holes to excuse what they are doing. Businesses are struggling more now so need to be open, furlough Is also slightly less generous.

yes to this
supersonicginandtonic · 04/01/2021 15:29

@notevenat20 some people woll need to leave more than once a day though, work, appointments, exercise. My son will need to go out more than once due to his needs.

luckylavender · 04/01/2021 15:29

Plenty more they could do. Schools, universities, borders, playgrounds, non essential retail. Exercise limited. In Smiths & M&S & Boots & Superdrug you can buy anything. It wasn't like that in March.

notevenat20 · 04/01/2021 15:32

PM will be directly addressing the nation. It won’t be a press conference. Tier 4 restrictions will be imposed everywhere. Schools closed. No more team games in parks. But outdoor exercise will still be allowed.

From Robert Peston.

After all, it worked in France.

Oh wait, it didn't.

borntohula · 05/01/2021 11:27

How come the case rates for children in my city is so low (0 in 100,000 in 10-14yos) when schools are apparently super unsafe? Genuine question.

Which city is that? St David's, Pembs? (you get the joke if you've been there!)

Seriously, the problem is that once it's 1 case per 100,000 it soon becomes two, then four, then 8, then 32, then 64 and so on.
