@FourTeaFallOut

I honestly don't think it's insurmountable. When you take out kids and vaccine refusers we have around 37 million to jab. With a double dose vaccine and 2 million doses a week (feasible in a week or two) that's 37 weeks.

That's ignoring the j&j jab that might kick in from March and halving the vaccine schedule from there on in.

Obviously life never works as smoothly as we hope but I don't it will take a year to get to the worried well.

And don’t forget that some will refuse the vaccine (they think the uptake will be around 80% from previous surveys) So now the target is actually 80% of 37 million.
FourTeaFallOut · 09/01/2021 08:49

I added in the vaccine refusers with the kids. Smile

Oh, I need to be on this thread 🙂.

I half remember that some more research results were expected at the beginning of this year re possible treatments, is that right though? I think for monoclonal antibodies, and possibly something else as well.

🤞🏻

Sorry I missed that! Too early Smile

Can’t link as it was in a physical copy of the Times today but Prof Eleanor Riley from Edinburgh says that not only is there a limit to how far the virus can mutate but it is possible to predict the mutations so the vaccine makers can stay a step ahead.

The results of 2 monoclonal antibody treatments have been announced, tocilizumab and sarilumab (anti IL-6). I think more are due to report though.

I also remembered about a potential vaccine from Cambridge that is in early stage trials that aims to protect against the majority of coronaviruses, so would be protective against future mutations. Early days, but promising for the future:

Thank you cathyandclare, I've had a busy week at work, and hadn't realised that those two drugs were the monoclonal antibodies - I'm supposed to be a scientist 😄😳

cathyandclare · 09/01/2021 11:39

I had to google it to confirm! The only way I can tell is if they've got weird unpronounceable names that end in mab.

Blerg · 09/01/2021 11:46

Why the 10 day reduction in time in hospital is amazing. Am I right in thinking they can use that straightaway?

Blerg · 09/01/2021 11:48

Wow not why! I’m not in an old timely film 😄

Not exactly scientific good news haha but just heard that it's been confirmed that Eurovision will definitely go ahead in May.

Good news is that they obviously feel confident things will be safe enough by then.

JemimaPyjamas · 09/01/2021 12:15

Ooooh, wow that's great news. I have no interest in Eurovision whatsoever but it's a great sign that it's on!

I have just been having a conversation with a friend where I was quite optimistic about our travel (far east, go end of July) and she seemed quite pessimistic, sending me links about how they are insisting on quarantine etc. It made the low level anxiety come back about whether we have done the right thing in booking (its flexible but still...) and so the post about Eurovision has been great. Thank you!

thatgingergirl · 09/01/2021 12:24

Yay!! My mum has an invite to book at one of the big centres (about a 50 minute drive).

Boo!! She's anxious about where my dad's letter is and wants to wait for his to come, to book together. I've said as my dad is CV, he may well be getting an appointment through a different channel (I've no idea!), and the chances of getting them appointments "together" are next to nil anyway. We've compromised - I've told her if dad has heard nothing by Monday, I'm booking her in. We'll sort dad after.

chri55ie · 09/01/2021 12:26

I think we are in the eye of the storm at the moment so the pessimists will just find everything to be pessimistic about sadly. It will get better!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/01/2021 12:38

This is such a great thread.

TheChineseChicken · 09/01/2021 13:00

I just got lost in a schools thread that wasn’t in the CV topic. Save me!

I'd book her in and take your dad too, he may get the vaccine if there are no shows.
Peggyslantern · 09/01/2021 13:30

I have absolutely no interest in Eurovision either but imagine this year I will have a thick layer of facepaint and flags stuck in a silly hair do come the evening - I will be celebrating and joining in with every joyous thing I can think of just for the sake of it. I am so done with misery.

thatgingergirl · 09/01/2021 13:33

cathyandclare - gosh, that hadn't occurred to me! He'll want to come "for the ride out" anyway!

thatgingergirl · 09/01/2021 13:54

cathyandclare - I'd meant to put a "thank you" in there too!

They are also recruiting for Love Island too. Some people would consider that bad news but it suggests that some travel will be available as well as a drop in social distancing I assume!
Inastatus · 09/01/2021 14:33

Yay for Eurovision 😀 Any hint of a return to normality, however cheesy, is very welcome!
