Corona virus good news tweet re novavax and j&j vaccine results soon - they’ve been pretty reliable so far!

I would love to know who they are...been reliable all the way through!

@FuzzyPuffling

Now let's get all those pharmacies set up!

(Although I laughed (hollowly) at the "90% of people within a 20 min walk of a 0harmacy...our nearest is 7 miles away and a 20 minute walk would get you yo a field full of sheep. I'm definitely in the remaining 10%)

And I'n slightly nervous of a queue of people trying to get into our local Boots, queuing down the high street of a small town with other shoppers shoving past and everyone stopping for a chat with their friends and neighbours...

I'm tipping the average the other way ☺️ I live in Morningside, Edinburgh. An area famously over served by pharmacies! I have five within a ten minute walk, although the lady in the nearest one thinks her job is to prevent the sale of otc medicines. God she makes you beg.

HOW ITCHY AND HOW MUCH DISCHARGE, EXACTLY?

TheChineseChicken · 06/01/2021 18:39

@CornishYarg

Positivity, Puffins and Pharmacies...this thread is a welcome relief as the doom continues unabated everywhere else.

I get an annual flu jab and while the GP surgery does the over 65 one, the under 65s have been done by the pharmacy for the past two years. They're extremely efficient and as the pharmacy is connected to the GPs, they were able to update my records immediately. It was slightly slower this autumn due to the pharmacist changing PPE between people, but not massively so; the pharmacist said he had done back-to-back flu jabs all day as demand was high.

Our pharmacy would be absolutely hopeless so I hope they don’t get involved! When I had my flu jab done this year I had to stand around inside for 30 minutes inside then the pharmacist only wore a visor, not a mask Hmm
impostersyndrome · 06/01/2021 19:39

I love this thread. A true sanity saver. Another positive piece in the FT (who are generously making all their Covid articles free): www.ft.com/content/9f80bc60-d3db-4746-b122-aa762ea0e814: worst-hit areas are no longer deteriorating.

TeaInTheGarden · 06/01/2021 19:44

@cathyandclare do you need medical training to volunteer? I would love to get involved but not medical at all!

If that’s the Boots I’m thinking of that would be a super spreader event!

Too right Dobby. I'm glad you know it and agree. (So the world this thread can see 'm not just being a Doom-muppet!)

No you aren’t. DH had loads of trouble trying to get his late DF in his wheelchair into Boots. Very narrow.

MIL had her vaccine last month in the town with Waitrose. Some GP centre I think. Very well run.

TheChineseChicken · 06/01/2021 20:11

Are you talking about St Ives by any chance?!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/01/2021 20:11

I am not convinced by the pharmacy thing- ours might have excellent staff but they don’t have the space. Boots has a tiny internal room which is not very well ventilated. If they could lend staff to the well organised and spaced out local gp hub that would probably help more.

feelingverylazytoday · 06/01/2021 20:38

I would guess pharmacies might be more helpful later on, when the initial push is over.

FuzzyPuffling · 06/01/2021 20:52

Dobby that's where we'll get our vaccines. Five local practices have "clubbed together" and are all being offered there. They trialled it with the flu vaccine in late autumn, so as to be ready.

Chinese Chicken not St Ives...well up the coast from there!

Inastatus · 06/01/2021 20:56

@FourTeaFallOut - I love that race against time article.
I also love the fact that there’s loads of chuffed 80 somethings out there proudly wearing their ‘I’ve had my Covid vaccination’ badge 😁 I wonder if they get smarties too?

TeaInTheGarden · 06/01/2021 21:06

Will all these vaccinators get the vaccine before they start? Seems like it would only be fair lol...! As they will be in close contact with a LOT of people...!

Oh yes, remember mil saying it was five practices. She was very impressed with the way it worked. She went somewhere else for her flu vaccine. Normal GP I think.

ChineseChicken St Ives pharmacy is teeny. I went to that Boots once for a nail file (very random)

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/01/2021 21:08

From conversations on here with a vaccinator I think the answer to that is no but in practice they are first in line for the leftover doses.

OrangeBananaFish · 06/01/2021 21:10

My friend changed her FB profile pic to have that as a border.

My other friend who I didn't think was going to have it (as she was a bit cagey about it) messaged today to say she has her appointment this week.

TheChineseChicken · 06/01/2021 21:13

I was trying to imagine the chaos that would result from people trying to queue in st ives to get into boots for a vaccine! Shock

Justiceishalfblind · 06/01/2021 21:15

Thanks for this!

What about economic good news. Does this belong here or is a new thread the way to go

MarcelineMissouri · 06/01/2021 21:18

@Justiceishalfblind absolutely it can be posted here - the issues with the economy are just as worrying as COVID!

Justiceishalfblind · 06/01/2021 21:27

Ok great. Economic good news here.

I’m in the private sector, I give advice to businesses in a specialist area.

There are countless businesses starting up and some of them are finding traction and succeeding.

One of our UK clients has become a “Unicorn” business within 9 months of starting up.

Also, I have had a front row seat to the transformations in automotive and aerospace technology for the past decade. The green revolution has quietly been happening for years and we are ready for electric green power.

I’m not saying it won’t be tough but I do get to glimpse the “next big thing” and it will be ok, perhaps even good.
@cathyandclare do you need medical training to volunteer? I would love to get involved but not medical at all!
No you don't. I am, but they requested 2 A levels and preferred first aid training. There are admin volunteers snd support staff too. There's training on line and in person.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 06/01/2021 22:07

Our flu jabs administered by our GP surgery this year were fantastic. Appointments given at three minute intervals. Car park closed to allow for socially distanced outdoor queuing. When you got to the entrance over 65’s went in one door, under 65’s another (I think there are different flu jabs). When I went inside there was a socially distanced queue and a volunteer asking us to get our bare arms ready. I was called forward, four vaccinators at a time delivering shots from appropriately distanced tables. Checked name and date of birth, stabbed needle in arm, thank you very much exit through an open fire door in a one way process. It was astounding and my GP surgery can’t usually manage to answer the phone so it was truly incredible. If they delivered COVID shots like this it would be brilliant.
