DH has sent me this. Not good news, as such, but a measured and sensible article about vaccines. Well worth a read!

Just checking in for my daily dose of positivity. Have stayed away from the other increasingly dramatic threads and am feeling much much better this morning so thank you.

Puffin chat is also very welcome Grin

Cathster · 06/01/2021 12:24

My grandparents had their second dose of vaccine today. I thought all second doses had been cancelled so I am so pleased for them, especially my grandmother who has really struggled with the isolation alongside having to care for her husband almost entirely alone.

2020CanDoOne · 06/01/2021 12:30

I keep reading the other threads, especially the schools ones and then feel completely horrible. If I have one resolution it's to try and look on this thread only. I have a friend at one of the big vaccination centres and he's giving daily updates on his private facebook page, it's pretty inspiring how many people are giving their time, most voluntarily.

FuzzyPuffling · 06/01/2021 12:35

There is no need here to say "thank you for the thread". The thing is, we're all contributors, it's not lead by any one, or group of, people.

I'm a believer in the "we're all in the same storm, but in different boats"...and all of us who choose to find interesting and positive news and not to be doom-muppets are on this boat! ( Which, incidentally is called "Boaty McBoatface"!)

The thing is, in this country we are a great bunch of ‘doers’. Now there is something we can actually do- get the vaccine programme up and running- and large parts of the actual logistics are out of MP’s hands, I have every confidence we will crack on. The UK really can deliver on stuff like this and everyone is behind it. It’s going to be a miracle of modern science.

boon · 06/01/2021 13:09

All the drs surgeries in my town have decided to go ahead and give second jabs to all those who were due them, which I think is great 🙂

All aboard for a trip round the headland on the Boaty Mcboatface. Some worry about the rocks but we prefer to spot the puffins. The ship has done this trip before and always got home safely. Which is not to say we trust Boris, because we don’t particularly, but humanity has endured many pandemics and always come out the other side.

Why it doesn't matter if the vaccines only stop disease and don't create 'sterilising immunity':
theconversation.com/coronavirus-few-vaccines-prevent-infection-heres-why-thats-not-a-problem-152204

and

Massive vaccine rollout is challenging but the army are on it (I have much more faith in their logistics than the government's...)
www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/boris-johnson-escape-lockdown-vaccine-mps-b717931.html

One line that jumped out at me from the Standard article:
"There are over 11,000 pharmacies. If each of those does 20-a-day that is 1.3 million-a-week extra vaccines that can be provided, very often to those who are hardest to reach."

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/01/2021 14:46

Great articles Clare, thanks.
I think when the mega vaccination centres are open next week a lot of people are going to feel calmer.

Boredsillyathome · 06/01/2021 14:55

I'm not reading anymore of the other CV threads they are all so hysterical, I'm staying right here with the positive people Smile

BigWoollyJumpers · 06/01/2021 15:05

Absolutely agree. I did have a question though if any pharmacists here. They are not linked to GP/NHS records, so how would you keep track? I had my flu vaccine at Tesco's, but my GP doesn't know that.

FourTeaFallOut · 06/01/2021 15:08

I might be able to help there. I get my flu vaccine at Asda but because I am eligible for a free vaccine all that information does get added to my NHS patient notes. So, the facility is there.

thatgingergirl · 06/01/2021 15:17

Sanctuary! Sanctuary!

I've just delved into a couple of other threads - big mistake.

I can see there's hoo-ha about pharmacies Clare - I read this earlier www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/pharmacistss-offer-speed-up-covid-23267964, but it does say within the article -

Boots, Lloyds and Superdrug have been involved in setting up vaccination centres, and NHS England said community pharmacists would be utilised, but it was finalising details of how many.

A spokeswoman said: “As more supply becomes available, community pharmacists able to administer large numbers of vaccines will be the first to play a role.”

They do still talk about large numbers - I think it is really an "organisational" thing to sort out local pharmacy delivery. I think there might be some problems sorting out which 20 people are going to which pharmacy on which day, from huge lists of people that are currently just being ploughed through, with an appointment at one venue being offered. Someone on TV earlier said that 90% of people are within a 20 minute walk of a pharmacy. There will be people of course who couldn't walk for 20 minutes anyway though, so parking availability becomes an issue.

I am sure every option will be put to best use - we'll get there!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 06/01/2021 15:18

I think the problem they have with using pharmacies is the priority list. They are worried that to many doses will get used for people not on the list. A mixture of corruption and genuine human error.

Sure they will eventually think of a way around this or after the first 4 priority groups are done be more relaxed about some doses going astray.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 06/01/2021 15:23

My mother inlaw has just WhatsApp photos of her wearing her I have been vaccinated stickerGrin

She had her second jab this morning. We weren't sure if she would get it now but they are honouring everyone that had first before 1st January.

She has been shielding since last March and lives alone. So excited for her to eventually be able to hug her grandchildren again.

thatgingergirl · 06/01/2021 15:24

Stickers! How marvellous!

Ahhh, that is interesting. So it is more like a "prescription". That should work.

Another positive article on long term immunity

Did you know the Covid vaccine gives you hundreds to thousands times more immunity than having had the virus?
Virologist @DrChrisSmith tells us some interesting facts as he answers our panel's questions about vaccination

This guy was on Jeremy Vine this morning... really clear, and reasoned, and all good news Grin. I didn't know that!

FifeQuine · 06/01/2021 15:43

Long time lurker, first time poster on this thread I think.

This is a place of sanity, thank you!

I've just had a rant on another forum I'm a member of where people were saying how they hadn't yet been contacted about their vaccination and would have to drive 5 miles to get it anyway and so OBVIOUSLY everything is a SHAMBLES. So I'm here for a bit of an antidote.

I also like puffins. 😉

Wherediditgo · 06/01/2021 16:04

I mean, who doesn’t like puffins? Smile

thatgingergirl · 06/01/2021 16:16

The chap at number 26.
