Welcome aberforthsgoat.

Hang around here for general cheeriness without sickliness, positive science and a respite from Doom-monger Muppets.

Apparently Israel has now vaccinated 25% of people over 60 years old. And they've just approved the Moderna vaccine. I think they still have 3.5 million+ Pfizer vaccines to burn through.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/01/2021 13:00

I shall be SO interested to see how their infection rates do.
Are they in any sort of lockdown too?

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 05/01/2021 13:04

There at the disadvantage that coronavirus rates are on the rise with the more infectious strain giving them grief too. They're not under lockdown but considering further restrictions. I think the lag between jab and immunity might mean we have a little while to wait to see.

FourTeaFallOut · 05/01/2021 13:04

They're 🤦🏼‍♀️

sashagabadon · 05/01/2021 13:05

I listened to an interview regarding Israel and why the vaccine roll out is so speedy there. The size of the country is a factor as they only need one central storage place so logistics are easier but more interestingly they have free Public Health Service but where we have one, they have four. And these four can openly compete for customers and so when they were all given the vaccine roll out they want to compete with each other to prove to their own “customers “ they are doing better than the other 3. I thought that was v interesting.
And in France the roll out is so slow due to vaccine scepticism and the bureaucracy involved in getting consent. Apparently you have a first appointment where you discuss your fears over the vaccine then a second appointment where you actually get the vaccine Confused
They’ll have to lose that first appointment soon if they don’t want to lag further and further behind everyone else

FourTeaFallOut · 05/01/2021 13:08

Good grief France. Get with it!
I did hear that they have a huge number of anti vaxxers...what are their measles rates like? Or is it just this vaccine they hate? And would they be any more compliant if the Sanofi vaccine had come good?
Thinking out loud here.

Sounds very French!
sashagabadon · 05/01/2021 13:13

Apparently they do but why I have no idea! They are the country of Pasteur as macron said after all.

Loving this thread! (Homeschooling not so much!)

@Aberforthsgoat
When I feel the doom descend I think of the Spanish flu and how that died out of its own accord after two years. I know it’s not a like for like comparison in many ways, but it does make me feel hopeful that this won’t last forever.

chri55ie · 05/01/2021 13:25

I think also the French require written consent... I couldn’t believe their vaccination rates or lack of..

Also who is actually saying it will last forever?

Karen's mate's neighbour's dog walker said so on Facebook 🙄

Has anyone actually ever heard a scientist say we will be in lockdown forever?
No!
Covid might be around forever but it will be under control just like any other flu.

Focus on the facts coming out of the mouths of the professionals. Not the media and not people who thrive on dragging others down.

I actually no longer watch the updates/listen to or read the news, my only source of info is this thread (and my husband who kindly filters out the sh*t and tells me any good news he's heard)

It really helps with your mood 😊

FuzzyPuffling · 05/01/2021 14:25

I've started making myself a summer dress. More optimism!!

And then there was the “roaring 20s”!
Treaclepie19 · 05/01/2021 15:56

I'm back to hiding in here after having a browse of the main coronavirus board. Eesh.

Aberforthsgoat · 05/01/2021 16:01

Thank you all I am going to ignore the rest of the coronavirus board. I swear it’s like people are gleefully rubbing their hands together while saying things like IT WILL NEVER END YOUR LIFE IS RUINED AND DOOMED EVERYTHING WILL BE AWFUL FOREVER and then wondering all innocently why people are getting so anxious or het up.

This is a refreshing change. And thank you for mentioning about other pandemics i think that’s easy to forget!

TJ17 · 05/01/2021 16:04

@Aberforthsgoat even in our family group chat yesterday I jokingly said I'm just going to hide away at home until somebody tells me it's safe...

Cue TWO family members both saying "you'll be waiting a long time" 🙄

So infuriating isn't it. Why would you want to believe the worst? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I went back with "well it'll be a lot sooner than it was this time last year!"

I think some of them aren't innocently scaring others. It is how they get their kicks or something.

Anyway this is a lovely thread isn't it. Does make a nice warm read.

My mum's next door neighbour has her vaccination appointment. I really want my mum and dad to get theirs, but am happy to take this news as progress!

Benjispruce2 · 05/01/2021 16:31

My 80 year old dad had his vaccine! Grin

89redballoons · 05/01/2021 16:32

My childhood best friend, who is a junior doctor specialising in respiratory medicine working in a big city hospital, got the Pfizer vaccine today Grin

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 05/01/2021 16:35

Can anyone recommend any positive, sensible scientists to follow/read?

Benjispruce2 · 05/01/2021 16:43

Chris Smith!
