Sorry that sounded negative. I’m just gobsmacked at how terrified people are. I was talking about holidays yesterday and my friend (30’s healthy white female in upper middle class area) implied she won’t be travelling till vaccinated.
There seems to be a real lack of understanding that the risk to most of us is not the actual virus, it’s the risk of not having an NHS there if we need it for something else. The communication has been unbelievably poor.

Well said.

I hope the press get a grip now as well and stop with all the scaremongering bollocks / half truths / jumping on every negative. My daughter was so excited about going to school tomorrow and laid her uniform out before bed (she’s five), she will be heartbroken tomorrow but it will all be worth it if this is the last time we have to do this. We need to pull together now. Get this vaccine roll out right and put aside petty differences and political wrangling. Shit just got very, very real.

Also, so absolutely trivial compared to what’s going on for some people but I know the lovely people on this thread won’t flame me for it but I was due to have my hair cut tomorrow 😭 it so badly needs doing. I’m expecting a baby at the end of March and I can’t cope with the thought of not having it cut before then! I need to get a grip don’t I?!

Bathroom12345 · 04/01/2021 23:05

Save. Absolutely understandable re your hair. Last time I cut my own fringe and despite watching some You Tube videos it didn’t go well.

My DH offered to do it but it will be a cold day in hell before I let him do it!

tobee · 04/01/2021 23:24

Ah commiserations on the hair @SaveWaterDrinkGin.

I've not had my haircut since February 2020 GrinIt looks terrible. My Dh said I look like a Viking Sad

PlasterIt · 05/01/2021 01:10

This thread has enabled me to sleep tonight. Thank you. It is exactly what I needed to read after seeing all the 'world is ending' posts elsewhere on here.

I will now completely hide the CV board and just read this one x

Benjispruce2 · 05/01/2021 06:32

What a refreshing read. I’ll be back.

Ah, the haircut thing is gutting!

The first thing I realised when I woke this morning is that I’ll have to keep organising three meals a day for DD - I was so looking forward to school feeding her Grin

Agree with this completely
Fleshlumpeater · 05/01/2021 06:39

How will they convince schools to open if risk to teachers has not changed?

Sorry don’t know how to quote the above but I think that’s why Boris was trying to o emphasis last night that it’s not that schools are unsafe, it’s to reduce the overall transmission because the NHS is on its knees. I know this comment has come under criticism on other threads for not making sense but in my mind that’s how he’ll push for the schools to re open. Because the reason they’ve closed isn’t that they themselves are unsafe, they’ve had to close to reduce spread. Kind of makes sense to me anyway and I’m hoping they do re open after the Feb half term.

FourTeaFallOut · 05/01/2021 07:22

I think once the transmission numbers and covid deaths come down and we don't have wall to wall news coverage of ambulances banking up, then anxieties will drop again, like they did last summer.

TheChineseChicken · 05/01/2021 07:38

I was reminiscing about last summer with my mum - it felt so normal. We need to remember that as that was without a vaccine. Things will be normal again

TheChineseChicken · 05/01/2021 07:38

Apols to those shielding as I appreciate last summer didn’t feel normal to you x

I totally agree with this.

Don't worry about it on my account. It was less concerning by summer and easier once the shielding advice stepped down to a closer approximation of normal.
GraciousPiglet · 05/01/2021 07:59

Been lurking for months. Posting now and avoiding all other threads.

I now have 2 kids 3+6 home learning. Bit daunting but we can do it. There is a light at the end of the tunnel this time and we know what we are doing!

I agree with @FourTeaFallOut in retrospect summer felt so incredibly normal. If we can get back to that level alone it'll be fab. I truly think this is the last little hurdle we will have. We just have to ride it out. This time next winter the huge majority of people will have been vaccinated and things won't be the same. Everyone with an ounce of scientific experience is saying this - we must listen to them. We have come such a long way since march, it's incredible.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/01/2021 08:25

We're back to shielding again. Not that we ever really stopped. As I've said before, the summer, although much more positive, was heaving with visitors here ( much more than usual) so July and August was a bit of personal lockdown for us.

I've not had a haircut for a year and look like a homeless poodle!

But if they can get the CEV group vaccinated by Feb, (DH) and me done a couple of months later I can cope with that.

But I hate the "this virus only kills 99% of people" trope. If you're at high risk that doesn't help, and it affects ( often long term) many more people than that. We need to all pull together now and stop the othering of at risk groups.

Happy to have found this thread - I must admit I am feeling wobbly this morning at the prospect of home-schooling (my DD really struggled emotionally last time and juggling work was tough) but I really need to try and think positive and look on the bright side. To that end, can someone just say that it isn't the end of the world if we don't get ALL the schoolwork done?! That kids' prospects aren't over forever if the odd thing doesn't get handed in?

TeaInTheGarden · 05/01/2021 09:06

My worry about schools is the unions have been saying they are not safe. They disagree with Boris that they are. There’s so little trust, I really hope this changes and once they can open the unions let it happen, and don’t call for all teachers to be vaccinated first....

Agree maybe once the hospital and death rates drop they will stop with three daily scare mongering and anxiety will ease??
I bloody hope so!!!!

FuzzyPuffling · 05/01/2021 09:23

Education wise, I'd be inclined to teach my children some life skills...cooking, cleaning a bathroom, budgeting, sewing on a button. I think they'd be more use than a lot of schoolwork!

TJ17 · 05/01/2021 09:25

@Clementine183 it really doesn't matter if it doesn't all get done Thanks

You can only do so much and mental health is what is most important here now!! A bit of time out over years of schooling really won't make much difference in the grand scheme of things!

Hang on in there - better times are just around the corner 🌈😊

TJ17 · 05/01/2021 09:28

@FuzzyPuffling I agree! Children are learning all the time in ways we don't even notice!
They don't have to be sat with a pen and paper 24/7 to learn and develop 😊

I agree this does feel like an issue now. I hope messaging will change a lot but don’t know if it’ll be enough.

Hopefully we’ll be feeling better all round by then

thatgingergirl · 05/01/2021 09:42

TJ17 - that's a wonderful link - gives perspective to more than just the school situation.

TeaInTheGarden · 05/01/2021 09:43

Does anyone have a link to a vaccine tracker that updates daily? I need some positive numbers to obsess over!!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/01/2021 10:03

The worldwide vaccine tracker seems to add data as and when it appears.
