Sending London patients to Yorkshire

DeRigueurMortis · 30/12/2020 01:44

It's been reported that due to capacity issues in London there is a proposal to send patients to Yorkshire.

London has more beds per capita than anywhere else in the country.

The nightingales have been dismantled.

In Yorkshire the rates have been high but (depending on north/south/east/west) brought into control though harsh lockdown. Those in tier 2 have been buggered by being inundated by Covid tourism and will be tier 3/4.

So Yorkshire is on the verge of it's own disaster with less beds per person than London and being overwhelmed by London cases before the local community can get a bed in their hospital.

Is it right that this should happen?

Then suddenly when London is in the shit they want us to be one country again.

You ever go to school? Ever learn about what a democracy is? Ever heard of our Queen? Or the United Kingdom? Ever hear of an election? Do you know what an MP is? Do you know the per capita contribution of GDP is in London compared to Yorkshire?

@EttaG Best not let any patients from Leeds be transferred to York then given that York is in a lower tier!

jillypill · 30/12/2020 11:47

@SimonJT that is what is so depressing

ThelmaNotLouise · 30/12/2020 11:48

@Burpeesshmurpees

EttaG is clearly a troll.
I don't think she is, she's posted perfectly reasonable comments on many other threads. Which makes me despair, because it means she actually believes and stands by the crap she's spouting.
Underadesk · 30/12/2020 11:49

There are some views on here that clearly don’t match the views of others- including mine, so please don’t tar the some of us together. My view about sharing the load came from worry- I’m in a high rate area, never really left any restrictions and we were always being told we were a sneeze away from the hospitals being full. Now seemingly we have very slightly reduced numbers and for that, will gain another tier. But the worry is, if this strain is spreading so rapidly, when it hits the areas where people are being moved to, where do we go for hospital treatment? I don’t want anyone to die- no one does for gods sake!, but you can imagine thinking ‘its still to come- we are fucked when it does’ its a human instinct.

Also, for the people blaming certain areas for the tory gov, blame the home counties etc for the majority. Much of yorkshire (and the north!) is overwhelming labour (we just have shit career mps)- the odd area doesn’t make it conservative.

BunsyGirl · 30/12/2020 11:50

@EttaG what are your thoughts on Suffolk? Many areas have lower rates than parts of Yorkshire, but they are also in tier 4. Please do tell us what you think about this. I can’t wait to hear more of your ridiculous arguments.

GarlicSoup · 30/12/2020 11:50

It is terrifying that the NHS is so overwhelmed that this is having to be a consideration. Really feel for the patients and their families who would be so far from each other at such a difficult time.

ObliviouslyIgnorant · 30/12/2020 11:54

It reminds me of parts of Africa devastated by Ebola, where the people wouldn't even bury the dead out of sheer fear.

I know that we're all living in fear of Covid. Some posters on MN have lost relatives. It is what it is.

I do feel really alienated now from the rest of England. Like London is some enemy, just because Westminster is based here. Let alone if I was living in Scotland or Wales or NI.

MoltenLasagne · 30/12/2020 11:56

@Charley50

London is almost the only part of the country that voted Labour in at the last election. So sick of hearing people from Yorkshire morning about Londoners. Over Xmas on here Londoners were blamed for rushing off to Yorkshire, when it's obvious that the people rushing off to Yorkshire were from Yorkshire. Blame the government that you voted for, not Londoners.
Can we stop blaming the North for voting in the Tories when most of their votes came from Southern seats still. Yorkshire still voted Labour as a whole, as did the urban areas of the North West and North East.

And again, can we stop falling for this absurd divide and conquer rhetoric about North v South, young v old etc - there's been 3 decades of bed reductions in the NHS across three political parties which has halved capacity. Let's get mad about that rather than pointing fingers at each other.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 30/12/2020 11:56

What’s the point of higher tiers behaving themselves if lower tiers are just going to spread the virus and then pinch their beds? Tier 2 (now Tier 4) people got themselves into this situation so they should deal with it themselves. Not impose the consequences of their bad behaviour on others.

Wasn't the quick rise in Tier 2 to tier 4 in the South due to the new strain rather than people's behaviour?

OK the Government messed up perhaps by not putting some areas in tier 3 earlier or allowing Greenwich schools to close early

ObliviouslyIgnorant · 30/12/2020 11:58

I believe that in WWII, a lot of children were sent out of London during the Blitz. Is this true? The attitude on here wouldn't suggest it?

I mean there with people with so little brain power who toddled along and set fire to phone masts, some people are so stupid they think the vaccines with implant is with teeny tiny microchips.

DigitalGhost · 30/12/2020 12:01

I think this just shows how much Northerners are disregarded. Fill up our ICUs with southerners so we're all screwed when it hits us bad round here.
Suppose when cases rise around here it'll be our own fault though definitely not a mutant strain.

So if you are your family were unwell would you refuse medical care in a location to the south of your home?

That's not a nice thing to say SimonJT.

I’m sorry for thinking idiots are idiots.
DigitalGhost · 30/12/2020 12:06

@simonjt the southern hospitals are full though aren't they 😑. Logistically isn't moving them a complete nightmare? We've had months and months to increase capacity yet we've thrown money at nonsense.

There's now talk of tents. What was the point in the nightingales? Where is the army?

There is obvious anger on this thread from people in the North who as a result of reduced bed capacity have been subjected to stringent restrictive measures. That should be listened to.

I know that the views expressed have come across as unfeeling, but to be honest I can't blame them. They have had less beds, hence higher restrictions. Now they are expected to take the overflow from London.

I see why it's galling. I know Northerners and they're not cruel or uncaring.

I think this thread has raised the disparity between beds per capita though. Yes London is up shit creek. We in London are potentially being transferred all over the place to an available bed.

Please lobby your local government for changes. People in London rarely get our way in votes.

Absolute rubbish. Most of West Yorkshire voted Labour.

ThelmaNotLouise · 30/12/2020 12:10

Burpeesshmurpees You know, seeing how much everyone hates us, maybe we should build a wall around the M25 and we can sit and count our gold in our ivory towers while quaffing champagne and having caviar on toast at every tea time. We'll refuse to let our taxes be spent on anything other than London and all trains from the north will terminate at Watford. Grin

Hoppinggreen · 30/12/2020 12:11

That’s hardly fair, a lot of people have said they think you Evil rich privileged Londoners should be treated anywhere there’s room.
