To think they should be aiming for 1 million vaccines per day

Once the Oxford vaccine is approved, we have purchased 100 million doses, they could have 30 million 1st and 2nd doses complete by the end of Feb. We have 6800 go surgeries, there is talk of the army and football stadiums and sports halls being used. There are over 11000 chemists. And then the news is Sage discussing 1million per week? Wtf? 4 million 1st doses and million 2nd doses - so 4million every 2 months is never enough, surely they can't be seriously aiming for 1m a week?

Just because we have "purchased" X amount of the vaccine, this doesn't mean that X amount is actually physically available to use. It will have been ordered rather than actually being in circulation.

Should all the medical staff that are currently working in hospitals that are close capacity just stop looking after those patients to give everyone a vaccine?

Just accept that the vaccine is not the silver bullet overnight miracle and accept we have another 12 months of this shit show ahead.

underneaththeash · 30/12/2020 00:30

Have you volunteered OP?

(In case you ask, I have, but it takes time to organise).

mrwalkensir · 30/12/2020 00:43

two of our local gp surgeries are shut as the gps have tested positive...

yuyubooboo · 30/12/2020 00:52

So you're outraged. But what do you propose we do about it? Do you have any idea of the logistics involved in delivering a vaccine? It's a nightmare

Heyahun · 30/12/2020 01:14

Lolz 😂. The whole world has vaccines on order and they need to be shared. The U.K. doesn’t just get the amount they want all at once

maddening · 30/12/2020 01:18

Oo did not know I could volunteer to help vaccination, I will look in to that, I work full time but could help on a weekend.

Can't help logistics as not my field, but there has been blustering talk of massive plans, army etc. And now we are looking at such a slow program.

I know from someone at AZ that they have millions of doses already to go they have been manufacturing for a while.

A lot of our healthcare students at my university are being recruited on 1 year contracts to do vaccinations. This will be in the homes of vulnerable people, as well as in clinics.
Where I am, public areas are being requisitioned for Covid vaccination centres. So, an area at my uni will be turned over to a vaccination centre for the local NHS board. It will be drive-through, as per the flu clinics.
I can only hope our NHS boards can get these going ASAP.

ekidmxcl · 30/12/2020 02:08

I’d like to see more than 1m per week actually.

Horehound · 30/12/2020 02:15

They also have to manufacture it remember... It's not just oh we have 4 millions doses ready to go...

feelingverylazytoday · 30/12/2020 02:21

Can't help logistics as not my field
So you don't really know what you're talking about then. Unlike the people who are organising the vaccination programme.

480Widdio · 30/12/2020 02:30

A million a day! Don’t be so ridiculous.

LadyJaye · 30/12/2020 02:55

I presume the first wave will be difficult, logistically, because it will comprise vulnerable people and frontline workers, so the vaxxers will have to go to them.

Next wave will be a wee bit easier, as those people will be mostly mobile.

According to the vaccine calculator, I'm not due until September 21. I hope I get done by a vet. Grin

I've read they could in theory be doing 3 million a week but thats if we didnt have a corrupt useless government who had actually prepared for this from the start.

user1471565182 · 30/12/2020 04:48

1 million a week will take a year. How many high risk cases will have died by then or be disabled from effects.

user1471565182 · 30/12/2020 04:49

oh by the way 1 million a week is how much we usually supply for seasonal flu vaccinations. Its a pathetic target.

movingonup20 · 30/12/2020 04:55

I'm volunteering at my drs, checking names off etc. They reckon they could vaccinate the whole town (over 16's)) in 2 weeks if they got supplies (no guarantee)

feelingverylazytoday · 30/12/2020 05:11

@user1471565182

It's got fuck all to do with the government, who in fact have done a good job of securing a large and varied vaccine supply. It's the logistics of vaccinating massive numbers of people at once through a health service that is already under intense pressure. Not to mention, we may not be supplied with 3 million vaccines a week. There are 7.8 billion people in the world, vaccines need to be distributed globally, not just to the UK.
user1471565182 · 30/12/2020 05:38

It has everything to do with the government.

user1471565182 · 30/12/2020 05:42

Are people just assuming theres a shortage of vaccinations because '1 million' is a big number? 100 years ago factories were producing millions of complex explosive shells and fuses a week. Yes it will take time but things arnt being pushed because the government is terrified to annoy its rich buddies as usual. Even Churchill and Thatcher just took what they needed to do the job in a crises. These lot wont. 1 millions is pathetic and its time the public knew that so they can push the government who know its pathetic but also know they'l get away with it.

By the way, why is the NHS at breaking point?

Merryweather80 · 30/12/2020 05:43

@user1471565182 Give over. Who was prepared for something like this?
@feelingverylazytoday Well said!

user1471565182 · 30/12/2020 05:45

oh sorry did this virus pop up last week or a year ago?

user1471565182 · 30/12/2020 06:07

Reports now of vaccines being disposed of because theyre out of date and not been used.

Pixxie7 · 30/12/2020 06:51

Have you considered the logistics of what your proposing it not just the availability of the vaccine how about the number of staff needed with an already over stretched nhs. I have run hundreds of flu clinics in y time which requires minimal patient consent.
This is a new vaccine and requires explanation and consent not to mention patient monitoring you are being totally unrealistic.

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 30/12/2020 07:01

The clue was in the part where you said you can only help weekends because you work full time. You'll find that most people vaccinating are doing so around their usual jobs, on top of their usual shifts. Because they can't just not see ill patients and go off vaccinating people. Yes, in some cases surgeries and hospitals can spare staff from the day to day clinics but not the amount it would require. Plus, I've worked flu clinics which are in and out and I've worked at one of the covid clinics - you are not in and out and lots of people have questions. Everyone involved in the actual distribution and giving of the vaccines is doing their best and as by your own admission you have no clue what you're talking about, keep your targets to yourself
