To think they should be aiming for 1 million vaccines per day

Once the Oxford vaccine is approved, we have purchased 100 million doses, they could have 30 million 1st and 2nd doses complete by the end of Feb. We have 6800 go surgeries, there is talk of the army and football stadiums and sports halls being used. There are over 11000 chemists. And then the news is Sage discussing 1million per week? Wtf? 4 million 1st doses and million 2nd doses - so 4million every 2 months is never enough, surely they can't be seriously aiming for 1m a week?
@cathyandclare - no it’s 5 doses. 5 x 0.3 = 1.5ml. 6x0.3=1.8ml. If you dilute with 1.8ml of sod chl and gave out 6 does you would have no wriggle room .
You’re not taking into account the volume of vaccine already in the vial. 6 doses are usually possible. It is in the second to last para of 4.2. of the Information for HCPs. www.gov.uk/government/publications/regulatory-approval-of-pfizer-biontech-vaccine-for-covid-19/information-for-healthcare-professionals-on-pfizerbiontech-covid-19-vaccine

@Chimeraforce

Based on each jab taking 2 minutes in total to administer, to get 1 Mill per day would take approx 355000 hours. Yep. Very doable . Hmm
Yes, if the same poor person is doing all 1 million jabs... which clearly would not be the case.
janetmendoza · 30/12/2020 19:58

Takes longer than 2 mins to administer even with a very competent patient. They have to take a seat, answer some questions to demonstrate the ability to consent. 'Why are you here today?' 'For a flu jab' 'um is it a flu jab???' 'Yup' 'Do you think it could be something to do with that other virus people keep talking about?' Etc etc etc eventually disrobe oops no not that arm pls.....Also the jabbers have to witness the mixing of the vials. So every six injections they are away into the back room to watch the mixing. So another 5-10 mins spent there after every sixth patient. About 10 mins per person at ours. Not forgetting all the contraindications that mean certain people do get turned away.

Bathroom12345 · 30/12/2020 20:03

Let alone the people who start asking about other ailments and the ones who have many ‘questions’ haven’t quite decided etc.

Kazzyhoward · 30/12/2020 20:06

Our local GP surgery don't do flu jab clinics in normal years, so they won't be doing covid vaccinations.

How do you expect them to deal with their normal/day to day work if their staff are tied up doing the vaccines?

DirtyDancing · 30/12/2020 20:08

Let’s say someone could work 10 hours a day without a break. Just to keep the maths simple, not because I think anyone could actually do that. And let’s say it took 10 mins per person to vaccinate someone. One person could do 60 people a day. Let’s say they were super efficient and it took them 5 mins per person, 120 people a day. We would only need 8,333 medical staff do vax 1,000,000 people.

Go.

Biscuit

Waiting for someone who can actually do maths to tell me that’s all wrong Grin

Having said that our flu jab queue at the GP’s had people walking up down answering questions, saying it was for a flu jab only, roll your sleeve up in advance (to stop any faffing around).

Generally just moving people quickly in and out without any unnecessary lingering.

Would love to see some government ad campaigns to help people understand how they can help make this an efficient process.

Bathroom12345 · 30/12/2020 20:15

Kazzy. How did your surgery get out of doing flu vaccinations? I guess whoever does your flu jabs will do the Covid ones. You do recognise that we are in the middle of a pandemic don’t you and we are all working and doing things we don’t normally do.

I am hoping to be on car park duty or queue control at my local GP’s surgery (no, I don’t work there, I work in the corporate world).

No idea. They used to get everyone in on Saturdays to do them in bulk according to surname, but for the last few years, they didn't make any announcements and when I asked the receptionist, she just told me to go to the chemists a few doors down the road, which is what we've been doing ever since - no appts needed, they do it there and then if you ask at the counter.
HildegardNightingale · 30/12/2020 20:27

@WiseUpJanetWeiss it also says 5 doses, but there may be sufficient for a sixth. So not written in stone.

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/12/2020 20:48

Each person has to be consented, paperwork completed, vaccine, nurse wipes down area, sit for 15 mins minimum to be sure no allergic reaction. L

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/12/2020 20:49

Sorry, with all the above and everyone remaining socially distanced etc it uses a lot more space ,time and personnel than the usual flu jab.

notevenat20 · 30/12/2020 20:53

We should be aiming to vaccinate at least as fast as Israel. Currently we are a long way off that.

WhiteChocTwix · 30/12/2020 20:54

DF who's in a care home, due to get his jab a week on Monday. He's fairly young to be in a care home but ECV, I'm so relieved for him it's coming.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/12/2020 20:57

I'm a nurse so very happy to volunteer to do vaccines. As I already do flu jabs. But have no idea how to go about it.

BadEyeBri · 30/12/2020 21:03

Lol at the PP who wanted a vet to vaccinate them. In that case it'll be going in the scruff of your neck and pray I don't have to take your temperature before hand.
On a more serious note most vet practices are swamped at the moment and we're struggling keeping up with our own work. I'm not about to finish my 11hr day vetting to rock up and do a few hours giving vaccines to humans. There is a reason I'm not a doctor.

HildegardNightingale · 30/12/2020 21:06

@Toddlerteaplease you’d probably be best going to NHSprofessionals and work on the bank doing vaccinations as you already have a full time job.
I’m retired so am coming back through Bringbackstaff (already did that In May for the Nightingale). There is a few bits you have to do on-line, but it’s really interesting.

Char2015 · 30/12/2020 21:08

How can we only have 550,000 Oxford vaccines ready to go.
These were meant to be manufactured in their millions here in the UK ready for approval.
Also, if we have 3 million Pfizer vaccines here in the UK, why are we not ramping up the vaccination programme?

Would a company produce millions of a product that hasn't even been rubber stamped?
Toddlerteaplease · 30/12/2020 21:13

@HildegardNightingale thanks. I'm not on NHSP but will take a look. Though as I'm CEV they may not want me.

didireallysaythat · 30/12/2020 21:15

Here they are calling for volunteers - I'm thinking of signing up for car park duty. 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon. Week days only.

Does anyone know if you need to commit to 5 days a week? I've got a proper job to hold down too but I don't mind standing in the rain for the better of man kind just not everyday to understand, doesn't matter now nice the high vis jacket is

mumwon · 30/12/2020 21:16

St Johns Ambulance Volunteers are being trained (check NHS website)to vaccinate My pharmacist said he will be as well -I suspect a lot of people who normally do other clinical jobs will be involved plus maybe retired nurses etc - there will be several types of roles from what I read - as pp says records etc but also people for supporting roles
I would love to help but have a vulnerable person at home so until they get vaccinated...

louisejxxx · 30/12/2020 21:42

@movingonup20

I'm volunteering at my drs, checking names off etc. They reckon they could vaccinate the whole town (over 16's)) in 2 weeks if they got supplies (no guarantee)
How did you get into doing that with your drs surgery? I’ve been thinking of volunteering 2 days a week whilst furloughed and that sort of thing would be perfect. I’d happily call around people getting them booked in or ticking people off a list.
