To think they should be aiming for 1 million vaccines per day

Once the Oxford vaccine is approved, we have purchased 100 million doses, they could have 30 million 1st and 2nd doses complete by the end of Feb. We have 6800 go surgeries, there is talk of the army and football stadiums and sports halls being used. There are over 11000 chemists. And then the news is Sage discussing 1million per week? Wtf? 4 million 1st doses and million 2nd doses - so 4million every 2 months is never enough, surely they can't be seriously aiming for 1m a week?

Just a thought, but we will need to pay prescription charge for this, won’t we?

Splodgetastic · 30/12/2020 11:43

Maybe they should get larger employers to corall (sp?) employees and use occupational health to do it.

Splodgetastic · 30/12/2020 11:45

IIRC when you get the NHS flu jab it’s free if you have a condition and you don’t need to pay the prescription charge but I can’t remember because I always go private now as NHS too slow to catch cold.

NHS flu jab is free for everyone eligible. I got my first one as part of the over 50 rollout, and didn’t pay.
WiseUpJanetWeiss · 30/12/2020 12:03

Each vaccine needs to be individually prescribed as there is no GPD (group prescription essentially).

This is not true for the Pfizer vaccine. It is a POM, but there is a National Protocol in place.

No.

oh by the way 1 million a week is how much we usually supply for seasonal flu vaccinations. Its a pathetic target.
It's realistic. You can't magic up production, distribution, resources, buildings staff, storage etc all at once. People will need redeploying and training.

Some people are so negative about everything on these threads.

Indecisive12 · 30/12/2020 12:17

Apologies I was told by my friend on the immunisation team there was no PGD yet for the Pfizer

No, why would you? They want as many people to be able to access a possible. A free £3 jab is much cheaper than an extended stay in hospital for covid.
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 30/12/2020 12:18

@LadyJaye

I presume the first wave will be difficult, logistically, because it will comprise vulnerable people and frontline workers, so the vaxxers will have to go to them.

Next wave will be a wee bit easier, as those people will be mostly mobile.

According to the vaccine calculator, I'm not due until September 21. I hope I get done by a vet. Grin

Is the vaccine calculation on the first vaccine or have they made one for the oxford already?

No. It’s not a prescription.
oneglassandpuzzled · 30/12/2020 12:22

@maddening

Oo did not know I could volunteer to help vaccination, I will look in to that, I work full time but could help on a weekend.

Can't help logistics as not my field, but there has been blustering talk of massive plans, army etc. And now we are looking at such a slow program.

I know from someone at AZ that they have millions of doses already to go they have been manufacturing for a while.

You don't need to be a logistics expert.
SilverBirchWithout · 30/12/2020 12:23

I’d much rather they under-promise and then over-deliver.
This Govt has cocked-up every step since being elected,

Did they tell you this more than a couple of weeks ago? Things move on quickly. www.england.nhs.uk/coronavirus/wp-content/uploads/sites/52/2020/12/C0956-Patient-Group-Direction-for-COVID-19-mRNA-vaccine-BNT162b2-Pfizer-BioNTech-11-December-2020.pdf
Indecisive12 · 30/12/2020 12:27

Yes it was 3-4 weeks ago, I figured it was in the process as it’s incredibly inefficient not to have a PGD but equally that could then take time to be put in place for the Oxford.

MorrisZapp · 30/12/2020 12:30

Yes what we really need right now is wild over promising, after all nobody will complain when the reality of rolling out a million jabs a day at the height of a pandemic immediately present themselves and the government 'under delivers'.

GwendolineWindowlene · 30/12/2020 12:32

I can only speak for myself, but I'm not negative about it at all, I'm curious about the logistics. I don't agree that this is a 'magic up' scenario, given that the plan to vaccinate has been on the cards since the beginning.

Medics on the thread, how much training does someone need to administer the vaccine and handle the associated admin? Given the shortage of medical staff due to illness and absence, and the pressure that the rest are under, has there been a recruitment drive for vaccinators and associated staff from outside the NHS in the last months?

Florelei · 30/12/2020 12:36

AZ is saying that it can deliver 2m doses per week.

Another fucking shambles and you all know it. A year they've had to set this up but theyve pissed away time and money with backhanders to their mates

User is trying to wind everyone up. I cannot believe anyone is that much of a misery guts. And on a day like this.

OXFORD - WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU.

Amidone · 30/12/2020 14:29

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine study says we need to vaccinate 2million a week to avoid a 3rd wave....
The Oxford vaccine's ease of use advantages will hopefully help but I still can't see it happening.

What if we send everybody one vaccine each through the post and they administer it to themselves? 50 odd million done in one day, job done, bing bang bosh, re-open the pub.

I can imagine that twat Cummings coming up with the idea. If you injure yourself, tough - natural selection at work.
LindaEllen · 30/12/2020 14:39

Are you aware of the fact that hospitals, GPs, pharmacies all have other things to do as well? They can't just drop everything for the sake of the vaccine, particularly when you consider it'll most likely be a yearly thing not a one off effort.

It needs to be incorporated into daily practice.

I think it's likely that from next winter it'll simply be offered at the same time as the flu jab, to a similar demographic, with private jabs available to other people who might want them.

But for now, slowly but surely, they'll make their way through the most vulnerable groups to try and get the mass immunity we need to get back to normal.

It's hugely unlikely that non key workers under 40 will ever see the jab!

Belladonna12 · 30/12/2020 14:40

There is also the slight problem that it needs to be refrigerated plus we don't have 50 million doses.
