To want to know when school staff and children are going to have Covid vaccinations

I work in a primary school. I have dc in school.

Given the current surge I frankly don’t want to return to school next week and sit in a squashed classroom amongst 30 children all day without PPE or social distancing. I don’t want my dc in a similar environment.

There is now a vaccine but my age group seem to be way down the list. Surely school staff and children should be higher up the list and at the very least have some indication of when they will be vaccinated.

I dont see why children should be high up the list as an age group. Teaching staff - yes, I agree.

littlemisslozza · 29/12/2020 21:03

Children currently aren't due to receive it as it has not been tested on under 16s.

underneaththeash · 29/12/2020 21:03

School staff need to be higher up (I think they will be after tomorrow).
Most children don't need to be vaccinated and won't be.

lidoshuffle · 29/12/2020 21:04

You can see when you will be due the vaccination on:

DailyMailHater · 29/12/2020 21:04

As stated above currently no plans for under 16s to receive the vaccination, they are still doing high risk elderly and front line nhs and care home staff, think it will be a while before have done all of those and can start looking at the next groups.

F1ftyF1fty · 29/12/2020 21:05

Even more reason for school staff to have it ASAP at the very least then.

Most children don't need to be vaccinated and won't be.

Which makes it obvious they are sacrificing so much for everyone else.

Bluebird2021 · 29/12/2020 21:06

children shouldn't get it!! what a waste that would be

IrishMamaMia · 29/12/2020 21:07

I think frontline NHS and then all school /nursery staff who have prolonged contact with kids should be done. I don't mind taking the risk when cases are low but when things are out of control it's not fair to take those risks in the line of duty.
Saw a snooty quote from someone on SAGE earlier about how school staff are still not an immediate concern.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/12/2020 21:07

Teaching staff yes
Or would it be cheaper and safer to give you decent PPE ?
As much I we
Need kids at school
Throwing teachers to the wolves isn’t the answer

F1ftyF1fty · 29/12/2020 21:08

So it will be ages until school staff get it then? Shouldn’t schools be shut until staff move higher up the list?

OP posts:
MushMonster · 29/12/2020 21:12

I think staff should be right after NHS, and carers. With the priority workers.
And, I think they should think of vaccinating children indeed.
They better speed up vaccines, as the virus is spreading really fast now. So only immunity in large numbers will help.
And I do not fancy sending mine to school, in close contact with others without immunity. I seriously think they must vaccinate them.

Looneytune253 · 29/12/2020 21:12

Well, at the moment they're not. Children don't need the vaccination at all. If you're vulnerable yourself or elderly you'll be in your own rightful place in the queue.

F1ftyF1fty · 29/12/2020 21:13

Some NHS staff are at less risk then many teachers and support staff.

OP posts:
IrishMamaMia · 29/12/2020 21:15

OP that was a quote I saw today but I hope the situation changes. After school staff I'd like to see other key workers who have to go out to work done.
I feel selfish wanting to put myself above the vulnerable but don't think the risks are acceptable anymore.

quirkyquails · 29/12/2020 21:17
You can see when you will be due the vaccination on:
www.omnicalculator.com/health/vaccine-queue-uk
It doesn't consider people working in education, only care and health.

hedwigismyowl · 29/12/2020 21:18

In my Trust, managers have needed to devise a priority list for the staff in their department in order to decide who to vaccinate first, eg those who were shielded, area of work/ covid or non covid based, patient facing or sat in office etc etc etc

F1ftyF1fty · 29/12/2020 21:18

But surely that is ludicrous.

OP posts:
meditrina · 29/12/2020 21:18

SAGE priority is to advice the Govt on how to avoid the NHS being overwhelmed, and the pressures are extremely high in several areas of the country.

Vaccination on the current priority schedule will avert ~90% deaths and so very many hospital admissions (by making the high risk have about the same risk as a young healthy person)

I really cannot see them deviating from that at present.

quirkyquails · 29/12/2020 21:19

@Bluebird2021

children shouldn't get it!! what a waste that would be
It'd be a waste if you got it then if that's your attitude
MushMonster · 29/12/2020 21:19

Why do some people think children do not need to be vaccinated?
We do get a vaccine for almost every possible illness that has a vaccine, in our area, when we are children.

AndcalloffChristmas · 29/12/2020 21:20

I do think school staff should get it.

Children with underlying health conditions should also be considered as soon as we know it’s safe for them.

MushMonster · 29/12/2020 21:22

I would rather my child has it than me. I do not want to chance it that she falls sick with it.
Honestly, I am finding that some people do have disgusting attitudes towards children!

delilahbucket · 29/12/2020 21:23

What benefit does vaccinating children have? As far as we are aware, the vaccine stops you from getting severely poorly, but it does not stop you from catching it and passing it on to others. It would be a complete waste of time and money, not to mention the fact that it hasn't been tested on children, when we know that kids don't tend to show any symptoms or get very poorly with it.

poshme · 29/12/2020 21:28

It hasn't been tested on children.

It isn't approved for children.

They are very unlikely to become very ill, or die of COVID.

Why should kids be prioritised over those more likely to die?
