Where are people catching it?

Presumably people in Tier 4 are hardly using public transport, the buses in London are empty. Schools are off, pubs are closed. Everyone I know is obeying the rules, possibly going for outside walks with one other person. Where is this massive spread coming from?

like last Summer when the govt "allowed" foreign holidays

case counts were low then and stayed low (at least in meterological summer, thru end August)

I'm not seeing that foreign hols in August had much to do with heaving hospitals now (4 months later).

Why aren’t teachers and all staff who work in schools being amongst the first to be vaccinated?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 31/12/2020 19:15

@bossyrossy

Because we are totally unimportant in the eyes of the government.
Vinorosso74 · 31/12/2020 19:18

School staff then supermarket staff and bus drivers etc should also be higher up the list.

Absolutely nothing has been provided for schools throughout this pandemic. It’s not going to change now. Education is not important to this government when it comes to actually giving funding or support.
CorianderBee · 31/12/2020 19:23

I'm in tier 4 and get on the tube twice a week for hospital treatment.

Still haven't had it. It can come from anywhere - the supermarket, the takeaway delivery man, the park, the corner shop.

WhoLettheCatOut · 31/12/2020 19:32

Well quite @bossyrossy. My 90yo grandma has had the vaccine, for which I'm grateful. However she hardly sees anyone so I'd like those who are keeping the country running such as teachers, shop workers, other front line services to get priority.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 31/12/2020 20:00

“Where are people catching it?”

The family next door only have one car. This evening there are three cars on their drive, another parked across their drive and another parked partially across mine. I can clearly hear the party....

No, no idea where are people are catching it after all we’re all safely locked down .... aren’t we........

BakewellGin1 · 31/12/2020 20:40

From the people I know...
Two work in a care home
One works in a hospital
One caught it in hospital (only place they had been)
One got it from supermarket (lives alone, sees no family or friends in person - shops once per fortnight)
One car shared when her car broke down and caught it from the driver (who tested positive a day later)
A large family mixed before xmas - 11 of 17 tested positive
One teen who roams the streets
Strangely enough - none from schools as yet

PipsM · 31/12/2020 20:54

I caught it at work. I’m a primary school teacher. It has been through our whole school community and staff badly affected, even though we wear face coverings and social distance within bubbles as much as possible. I imagine there will be many schools with the same, who will have to close due to staff shortages, in the next few weeks, especially with the Christmas bubble effect not being known yet. I’ve had a rubbish year at work and feel totally superfluous in the governments eyes. What a great Christmas present. Not sure if I am well enough to teach next week or not yet.... but don’t worry we are a “covid secure” school in a tier 4 area where more and more cases are appearing.
Happy new year!

nellyburt · 31/12/2020 20:54

I know of one person who caught it working in a high end retail store. She passed it to 5 people on Christmas Day.

Know of another family where 4 people who were together on Christmas Day have tested positive.

HeronLanyon · 31/12/2020 21:20

HNY pipsM hope your next year is better. Never ever will I forget how this government have treated teachers and nhs staff and care workers through this.
HNY all. Support all.

Kjc39 · 31/12/2020 22:01

Who’s to say it’s no just floating in the air, inside and outside. It could even be in water.

Thewiseoneincognito · 31/12/2020 22:46

I have a friend who works in Selfridges in Manchester City centre and she said there’s an awful lot of staff who were off with it there this past week. Funnily enough as you walk around that shop there’s always huge groups of people from different backgrounds socialising without masks on, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the staff are being infected by their customers. Terrible, why do the stores allow these twats to walk around without masks on??

CoolShoeshine · 31/12/2020 23:01

I agree with this too. As much as I’d like my elderly relatives to get the jab, key workers should take precedence as they cannot isolate and are vital to so many people, whereas generally the elderly can isolate a bit longer.
Bath789 · 31/12/2020 23:10

generally the elderly can isolate a bit longer
Unless they need medical care or personal care or to attend any kind of medical appointment - all common scenarios for over 80s.

PrincessNutNuts · 01/01/2021 00:50

At NYE parties near me. In Tier 4.

SomethingsGottaChange · 01/01/2021 02:00

And how much longer would you like the elderly to keep isolating

You dont think they have been isolated enough !!!!!

Em777 · 01/01/2021 02:15

@SideboardOfDoom

Anecdotal but a friend of mine works for track and trace. The one thing they have noted about the people she calls (i.e. the people who have tested positive to get their contacts) is that they have been EVERYWHERE. Out and about, seeing relatives, lots of visits to shops, hospitality (when it was open), etc. They don’t really speak to anyone who goes to the shop once a week and doesn’t really see anyone.
That sort of anecdotal info is actually very interesting. Probably proves that infection from surfaces (deliveries etc) are very low, which is what recent studies suggest too. Spread is predominantly airborne. If you avoid people, you avoid infection.
EmmanuelleMakro · 01/01/2021 02:21

Well I have a cold /not cv as have runny nose/ and is puzzling with all the hand washing/not socialising etc and don’t use public transport. Clearly viruses spread and all the ‘precautions’ we take are pretty pointless.

Etulosba · 01/01/2021 02:56

I have a cold too. Where it came from I have no idea as I haven't been outside the house/garden for over two weeks.

Skylor · 01/01/2021 03:03

I havent been out for weeks aside from woodlands walks with kids. Everything is done online.

Old people can isolate longer, it literally wont kill them to do so.

3littlewords · 01/01/2021 06:48

@bossyrossy

Why aren’t teachers and all staff who work in schools being amongst the first to be vaccinated?
Because the vaccines are being given out on clinical need rather than practical/society need. If there's 100 elderly or ECV people infected vs 100 younger healthier teachers infected (older or ECV teachers would be included in the former group and would be vaccinated anyway) which group is more likely to need NHS resources? I'm not saying teachers should be vaccinated, far from it, but I understand why they aren't first in the queue.
3littlewords · 01/01/2021 06:53

Loneliness does kill actually, look it up!

louisejxxx · 01/01/2021 07:03

The 1 person I know who’s caught it recently was mixing A LOT over Xmas and probably had an over share of drinks with substantial meals.

In general, hopefully things will start to drop soon as kids have now been away from schools for more than a week. I also am hopeful (which is probably really foolish!) that the lack of social contact either side of Xmas won’t result in as big a rise in cases as what was thought would happen.

Yes I know I’m delusional Hmm
