Do you think tier five will happen

Or just just being said as scare tactic? What else could they really stop people doing?

@Thewiseoneincognito

Tier 5 should have a curfew hopefully. Schools closed.
How will a curfew help? I deliberately go out to run early morning/at night so as to avoid the day time walkers (who don't seem to get the concept of single file 99% of the time). Restricting me to between 6am and 8pm would just mean I'm more likely to be near people.
Splodgetastic · 28/12/2020 19:05

@NikeDeLaSwoosh Who are you to tell me to pipe down?

I'm sure you will be shouted down because a lot of MN hate runners. I noticed in first lockdown I was forever diverting into the middle of the road for people walking 4 abreast who either thought they had right of way or didnt consider going in single file or 2 abreast.
Paris banned runners from the streets for a certain time frame earlier in the year but I thought that would be counter-productive as you would just get more people out in the hours it was allowed.

Too many people are abusing the privilege of outdoor exercise as an excuse to be out of their homes

Outdoor exercise is not a ‘privilege’, FFS

This sort of comment fascinates me. How do people maintain a healthy lifestyle if they view outdoor exercise as not essential!

I went out Boxing Day, in the space of 2 miles I had to go in to the middle of the road and sprint past people walking 2 abreast 3 times (with the cars coming up behind me), because heaven forbid that they should go single file. Not one word of thanks either btw and these people are just as inconsiderate with walkers. Maybe they should ban recreational walkers at certain times of the day, especially in my village all the runners know each other and are considerate enough to move over to one side or stop if we see someone coming in the other direction
BrightYellowDaffodil · 28/12/2020 19:59

I rest my case.

If you read my comments, I’m not Chicken Licken-ing about the prospect of another lockdown; I object to the amount of scaremongering that goes on where there seems to be a Top Trumps game in progress of “How Bad A Future Scenario Can We Come Up With”. Or did you not understand sarcasm?

But of course, as @PrincessNutNuts so sanctimoniously points out, we mustn’t question anything Because Of Covid. As if a) anyone was oblivious to this and b) there is no other factor at work such as non-Covid related health issues, mental health, having a job etc etc. But no! Lock everyone up! No exercise! Close everything!

PurpleMustang · 28/12/2020 20:03

No think if a tier 5 is needed they will just do a national lockdown againas too much of the country is already in 4

Fizbosshoes · 28/12/2020 20:07

As long as people are not over-exerting themselves or doing hazardous sports, I would hope that being fit and active would place less strain on the nhs than committing to stay indoors indefinitely.
NB I do do YouTube workouts and Joe wicks etc and would do so if outdoor activity was banned, but there is something different about being outdoors.

Fizbosshoes · 28/12/2020 20:08

And surely dogs need regular exercise outdoors too? (Our cats are lazy af and only go out for essential toilet breaks exercise)

HerrWanksock · 28/12/2020 20:14

Thank fuck I don't know people like some of the ones on here IRL. It's a virus, it's gonna virus. An airborne one at that. All of you wanking yourselves into a frenzy over how much better other countries have managed with their strict mandates? Do you bother to look at the actual data of those countries that you laud or is it only Oz and NZ that get you going? Those islands miles from fucking anywhere with a really low density population. Deaths per million for so many places now starting to look incredibly similar regardless of measures. Exception being SE Asia - where they tend generally not to be fat fuckers like us here in the west - plus possible T cell immunity from SARS.

But no, on you crack, demanding harsher and harsher measures. Presumably either securely WFH or on furlough (newsflash, if you're still on furlough you probably no longer have a job). In the meantime, selfish fucking covidiot that I am, I'll keep campaigning for schools to be open because stats like a rise in head trauma of 1493% to children during LD1 upset me just a little bit. Or 316,000 missing cancer diagnoses compared with last year. Or the small matter of £2trillion national debt. Or unemployment up by a million already. Or 140 million hungry children in the world as a result of lockdowns (selfish twats going on holiday feed those children). Or Bristol University's prediction of 560,000 lives lost long term. The list goes on, and on, and on.

But you're right, bring the army in, ankle tag us all, compliance is key.

And don't come crying to me if you end up one of those statistics listed above. If you vote/scream/demand for harsher tougher measures you deserve everything heading your way.

In the meantime I'll carry on, living my life and going out spending my money locally as much as possible in the vain hope I still have a town when this shit show is over.

But yeah, I'm the selfish one.

BooksAreNotEssentialInWales · 28/12/2020 20:25

@HerrWanksock - absolutely. We need to protect and fight for our rights. People died for them and they are precious.

amicissimma · 28/12/2020 20:37

@HerrWanksock, well said.

I feel for King Canute who dragged the court down to the beach to demonstrate that, no, human beings cannot control nature: not tides nor viruses.

trollopolis · 28/12/2020 20:41

How do people maintain a healthy lifestyle if they view outdoor exercise as not essential!

They exercise indoors, or in their own garden - look at those who ran marathons forward and back on a balcony

And surely dogs need regular exercise outdoors too?

Nope, as anyone who has had a convalescent pet can attest. RSPCA and other animal welfare organisations have webpages on how to keep pets happy and healthy indoors, regardless how long they need to stay in. Harder for larger/working breeds but not impossible. Some countries permitted toilet walks for dogs, even in v hard lockdown, within a couple of hundred metres of your front door - out pee/poop return.

There really does seem to be a lot of coming up with problems on this thread, as if that that was a reason not to act. Rather than issues which can be overcome with a bit of thought, determination and creativity

bookworm14 · 28/12/2020 20:51

A lot of people don’t have gardens, or balconies.

Iheartmysmart · 28/12/2020 20:53

Hmm loving the assumption that we all have gardens or indoor space for exercise! And some of us flat owners even have the audacity to have dogs.

Level the playing field shall we. You are banned from using your garden, you can only access the bare minimum of space in your house, basic food packages and £5 entertainment voucher each week for everyone, no satellite TV, if something breaks then tough luck all the repair people are in lockdown as well. Oh and you need to do 8 hours a day of working from home and homeschool two children as well - you can gave a couple allocated to you if you don’t have any, And all the time this is going on you have the uncertainty of knowing if you’ll have a job at the end of it. Seems only fair to me

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 28/12/2020 20:54

There is nobody to enforce anything. The police service is cut to the bone.
It doesn't matter what rules they bring in now. People are in general ignoring them.

ballsdeep · 28/12/2020 20:58

@Letseatgrandma

I’m sure primary schools will still be open in Tier 5, though...
They'll still be open in tier 105

Exactly. Bringing in tier 5 would be an example of the government wanting to be seen to do something to bring the virus under control when they know full well it’s all bullshit.

If everything is closed what on earth is a curfew going to do?

Am I more likely to catch virus if I go running or walk my dog at night?

Seriously get some sense.

Schools closed probably good idea for a few extra weeks. Curfew I suggest my people fled your type in world war 2.

It just proves, lockdown is a total upper middle class thing - those who can sit in their nice spacious home, enjoying their gardens, working from their spare rooms or on furlough. While the underpaid and undervalued go out to toil in the supermarkets, on the beat, in the hospitals, in order to "keep us safe".

They don't that is one of the reasons why we have so many obese people in this country. Which is also why a lot of covid patients need so much help. ICU is mostly older covid patients or very over weight covid patients apparently.

Also why mental health is so bad here too. Just look at some of the posters and there previous comments that are now saying we don't need access to outside spaces. I rest my case.

If bars and restaurants are shut and we’re not allowed into each other’s houses, how the fuck will a curfew help?
