Announcement today (Wed)?

Looks like they'll be an announcement of new restrictions today - ministers meeting this morning so (despite papers last night) doesn't seem they've decided what to do yet - more places in Tier 4 or national lockdown, maybe. Xmas Sad

Robert Jenrick quoted in Guardian today saying 'A judgment needs to be made as to whether the tiered system is strong enough, or whether at some point in the future we need to take further action.' which sounds a bit ominous...

I think there will be mutiny if they say secondary schools go back to face to face teaching any time in January in Tier 4.

LisaLee333 · 23/12/2020 11:31

I hope lockdown isn't til Boxing Day. I REALLY wanna see my (adult) DC on Christmas Day. First World Problem I know.

notevenat20 · 23/12/2020 11:32

can’t imagine not being able to leave my son to get on with schoolwork when he was 15. By that if there are no additional needs I would be wanting to deal with the reason he’s so irresponsible.

10 hours a day every day?

AuntieStella · 23/12/2020 11:36

There's usuallyma press conference on a Thursday, is there not?

So I can see sense in bringing it forward a day so it's not done on Christmas Eve.

That would mean announcements today (BBC reporting a Cabinet meeting - could be this, and deal or no deal) tomorrow morning mopping up details, then (nearly) everyone gets a 36 hour break (lunchtime Eve to end of Christmas Day) and crack on from 26th.

Anyone know when HMQ recorded her speech? Or are there too many issues with potentialmfor dramatic change that it'll have to be done live?

grauduroi · 23/12/2020 11:38

Irresponsible is not always the reason kids can't focus. My DS is concientious and a hard worker but is struggling with motivation and focus after a few days. He is a social lad and this lockdown is having a negative effect whether they are trying or not.

Emmie12345 · 23/12/2020 11:55

Hope it’s tiers

I’m in tier 1 - don’t see why we should lockdown just because urban areas have it badly as we are so sparsely populated

notagoodyear · 23/12/2020 11:55

Tier 1 makes no sense for Herefordshire - cases have doubled in pretty much every borough in the last week and often not from a low base. Broxbourne is one of the worst boroughs in the country

You are thinking of Hertfordshire not Herefordshire.
Broxbourne is in Hertfordshire.
Herefordshire is the extremely rural country on far west of England bordering Wales.

DfEisashambles · 23/12/2020 12:07

This government loves to make people wait in misery until the very last minute. They have done it the whole time, treating the public like little children while everyone scrambles to try guess what will happen next in their lives and plans. Disgusting.

QueenoftheAir · 23/12/2020 12:13

advising apart from staggered starts, schools would return as normal in January. But two households can't meet for one day

There is actually a logic to this, but the Government is not communicating it clearly, and I think many people don't understand it (or don't want to understand it).

It is because the schools are open, that we all need to be more restricted in domestic life.

Yes, children are mixing schools under less than ideal conditions for stopping viral transmission. Therefore, when the children are at home, the whole family needs NOT to mix domestically beyond the household.

I ave no skin in this game - I live alone & have no children - but I am prepared to follow higher restrictions in order to keep schools open so our children can continue their education, as this is a really important thing for the good of all of us.

I wish people would understand this.

rollinggreenhills · 23/12/2020 12:18

Something really bothering me at the moment (and I do understand that some people have no alternative) is that a huge number of people are taking their children into supermarkets. I know that kids don't have to wear masks at school, but please... if they are old enough, please get them to do their best to wear a face covering while they are in the shop.

We are in Tier 4 here and cases have nearly trebled in the last week.

StealthPolarBear · 23/12/2020 12:21

Is Herefordshire tier 1? I thought when they brought them in it was just Cornwall and Isle of Wight?

Similar to you in all respects and agreed with you!

I'm in Tier 4 in London suburb - I have been one of the people (including the family near me etc) who have socialised properly (outside, 3 households etc, local/online shopping etc).

Yet so many people I've seen out and about in pubs etc are obviously mixing households, and also not observing social distancing, wearing masks etc e.g. when in high streets... that's not thinking about the amount of people shopping in shopping centres, with or without masks, not wearing them properly etc!

My colleague yday has 2 under 10 school children and she said its a joke in their school as the kids wear 'snoods' but hardly any social distancing and lots of infection rates, her DH and DC1 got Covid 19 - positive test results received yesterday. She doesn't want to return to home schooling but thinks it is inevitable and one of only ways to stop infection, cross contamination etc.

Lots of Londoners travelled out of Tier 4 elsewhere for Christmas on Saturday but you can't stop people doing this.

Higher restrictions are needed generally.

Government hasn't helped at all in my opinion with mixed messages, 'soft' relaxing of rules etc.

lockeddownandcrazy · 23/12/2020 12:26

Hopefully secondary and Colleges shut - the teenagers are hopeless at social distance and that would mean no childcare issues. Primary to stay open

Oops - yeah, I forgot about Hertfordshire when I was looking at boroughs by county and didn't notice the T. Cases have still doubled in Herefordshire in a week so it makes no sense to keep it in tier 1.
notagoodyear · 23/12/2020 12:31

@StealthPolarBear

Is Herefordshire tier 1? I thought when they brought them in it was just Cornwall and Isle of Wight?
yes, since 16 Dec I think. Very rural, very spread out, people have to travel quite a long way just to get to the next town, many don't particularly leave the county except if they already live near a county border.
nosswith · 23/12/2020 12:34

Herefordshire in tier 1 made no sense because Wales is next door with parts having high rates of Covid. An incentive to drive over the border from Wales.

More sense at the time would have been parts of Devon adjacent to Cornwall.

TheNortherner · 23/12/2020 12:35

Great. No xmas with family, don't get my children back until boxing day then straight into lockdown and possible home schooling (with crap provision from school) whilst wfh. Yeah! So looking forward to this.

notagoodyear · 23/12/2020 12:36

I think people in higher tiers a just little jealous of Herefordshire. The area of Wales that borders Herefordshire is also very rural. There isn't mass travel across the border. If you haven't been there you won't imagine how rural these areas are. Nothing like Devon/Cornwall.

QueenStromba · 23/12/2020 12:38

@StealthPolarBear

They brought it down a tier last week - probably to try and prove that it was possible to drop down the tiers if you behaved yourself.
quiteathome · 23/12/2020 12:49

Is there an official announcement of an announcement yet?

RaymondSpectacles · 23/12/2020 12:50

I'm from Hereford originally. My parents are there. It's a large county - quite sparsely populated and impossible to get to (no major roads in/out). The places surrounding it are self-contained so nobody needs to go to Hereford from elsewhere. Hence Tier 1.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/12/2020 12:56

So there's no influx from South Wales, Bristol or Birmingham area wanting to come to your pubs etc?

RaymondSpectacles · 23/12/2020 13:01

@BarbaraofSeville

I'm no longer living in Hereford but I do know that the pub I usually go to when I'm back home is asking for people's postcodes on the door.

EdithWeston · 23/12/2020 13:01

I suppose the current English tiering and Welsh lockdown makes Hay-On-Wye a lawless border town. I can picture it now....

No just more mn speculation and drama 🙄
