Looks like they'll be an announcement of new restrictions today - ministers meeting this morning so (despite papers last night) doesn't seem they've decided what to do yet - more places in Tier 4 or national lockdown, maybe. Xmas Sad

Robert Jenrick quoted in Guardian today saying 'A judgment needs to be made as to whether the tiered system is strong enough, or whether at some point in the future we need to take further action.' which sounds a bit ominous...

@Miseryl

I'm so relieved the north west has escaped tier increases under this review although no doubt that may change in the future.
It didn't.

Cheshire and Warrington are both in the North West and now in Tier 3.

tootyfruitypickle · 23/12/2020 15:53

I agree about school staff being top priority for vaccination. And then school attendance being a choice. I would send in I think, but would want full disclosure on how many cases are in school, which we don’t get atm.

AuntieSocia1 · 23/12/2020 15:53

Have a safe Christmas might have been more appropriate! Happy?!

itsgettingweird · 23/12/2020 15:53

@manicinsomniac

I hope the teacher unions are on this .. especially of younger children / teens are more at risk

The problem is the teaching unions are too militant and go too far. The NEU has even demanded that teachers jump the vaccine queue. I will be so embarrassed if I, as a healthy-ish person in my 30s, end up getting a vaccine before some very elderly or very vulnerable people, many of whom live with school age children, have had it.

The NASUWT has some sensible stuff to say but the NEU shouts louder and is too extreme to be taken seriously.

My sister.

Nhs admin in a GP surgery has had her first covid vaccine dose.

I doubt she's more risk than me who works in a school.

PandemicPavolova · 23/12/2020 15:54

The mind boggles at how she can give that advice out re masks and crowds and do nothing in schools...

I'm sorry but I don't know think she is reassuring in the slightest and I don't trust her at all

Sobeyondthehills · 23/12/2020 15:54

@BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze

TBH that was better than I thought, I thought it would be from midnight tonight

Better? It would be better for it to be sooner.

I don't think those who were planning Christmas with family would agree with you. I am in tier 4 but have had a few days to get use to the situation. 2 days before is shit
PussyCatInChristmasStockings · 23/12/2020 15:54

@SabrinaTheMiddleAgedBitch

Happy Christmas Grin
There was a nervous pause before he said it...

do you think BJ the 🤡 wanted him to say "Merry little Christmas"?

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 15:55

@SabrinaTheMiddleAgedBitch

Happy Christmas Grin
I guess he had to say it? .. Considering what Gove said about 'experts' in 2016 , they certainly look to them now ,don't they? All the time!
PandemicPavolova · 23/12/2020 15:55

Our gp admin are behind massive perspex screens and going to doc is triaged... So twice I've been I'm the only one there.

At work one day I'm in a crowded room teen s squashed in.. In there all day?

She gives me the creeps. I'd rather listen to Prof Van Tam than her. She is good at dodging questions too . Had lessons from politicians.
Mumof3andlovingit · 23/12/2020 15:57

Sorry guys but did they say it’s a serious disease now for kids?
I missed it was putting baby down for a nap

manicinsomniac · 23/12/2020 15:57

TBH that was better than I thought, I thought it would be from midnight tonight

Better? It would be better for it to be sooner

Would it? Wouldn't any positive effect be more than ruled out by the hundreds of thousands of extra people who would suddenly find themselves with no Christmas dinner and go rushing to the supermarkets this evening?

SimonJT - they couldn't do that. There's too many of us and we don't currently have enough vaccine. If there was plenty to go round, great. I'm no anti vaxxer and I'm looking forward to my turn. I think it would be great if very vulnerable teachers could get a vaccine. But most of us are healthy 25-55 year olds and shouldn't be taking a dose from someone who is in very serious danger if they catch it.

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 23/12/2020 15:57

Hmm. I assume gp admin staff have started to get it because they'll be needed to help with arranging vaccinating others.

It's ridiculous isn't it? I feel for all teachers. Hung out to dry.
knittingaddict · 23/12/2020 15:57

@PinkSpring

Norfolk goes from Tier 2 to Tier 4 skipping Tier 3 entirely..... oh fuck you Boris you twat
So what do you want to happen? My parents area has gone form 2 to 4 as well and I can see the justification for it. The numbers have been increasing rapidly.
SansaSnark · 23/12/2020 15:58

@TicTacTwo

Many employees need school open in order to come into work but i agree that it must be frustrating for certain industries that they are considered essential/important.
Comparable to the total UK labour force, it's quite a small number of employees, though.

Obviously shit for them, but not as bad as shutting down your whole business for employers. And some could organise alternative childcare.

I'm not saying this is the right answer, BTW- I think other things are more important than "the economy" but the economic arguments for keeping schools open don't really stack up.

isthismylifenow · 23/12/2020 15:58

@WingingItSince1973

My friends are in South Africa visiting her parents. They flew out a week ago after negative tests etc. They due back in 10 days. Not sure how this is going to affect them but it sounds pretty serious. They have their 2 11 year old dds with them x
Do you know which province they have travelled to? Unfortunately most of the coastal parts are hotspots and they have stricter restrictions in place. On the garden route for instance, all the beaches have been closed.
manicinsomniac · 23/12/2020 16:00

itsgettingweird - that doesn't sound fair either but adding yet another 500,000 people to the queue ahead of vulnerable people is wrong. There are significantly vulnerable people who are in priority 6 as it is. How much longer do they wait if we put all teachers above them? Aside from vulnerable teachers, I think that would be really wrong.

GabsAlot · 23/12/2020 16:00

so my dsis has gone from tier 2 to 4-her numbers are half the amount as other tier 4 places makes no sense

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 16:01

Schools are used as a baby sitting service for younger children and the government know this. It's been ever thus and the reason they don't want to close them again I would imagine.

Jenasaurus · 23/12/2020 16:02

@SansaSnark

Business leaders cannot be happy with the repeated prioritisation of schools?

Especially when many businesses were open over the summer without a huge spike in cases (I know lots of factors were different then).

I actually think they don't know what they are doing with schools and intend to kick the can down the road for as long as possible.

I feel the same concern. I hope they dont wait unit the hospitlisations are filled with a dissproportinate about of young people and children. If they suspect children are likely to be seriously ill from this new variant from South Africa, they have to act beforehand. The way this new variant affects the young is already known in South Africa so we have th advantage to stop it before our own children become affected.
Miseryl · 23/12/2020 16:02

@PussyCatInChristmasStockings I missed the news about Cheshire and Warrington!

nosswith · 23/12/2020 16:04

Probably because of all those with second homes in north Norfolk who rushed there on Friday. Hopefully with moving into tier 4 they will leave for wherever their main residence is earlier, as they cannot go out for a 'substantial meal' after tomorrow.
IndecentFeminist · 23/12/2020 16:04

Isle of Wight to tier 3 🤦‍♀️😬

Well I’m firmly of the opinion that public health comes before Xmas. Hopefully then, next Xmas will be better for all. People need to lose this attitude that just because they’re allowed to do something, they should. Equally, anyone that is genuinely struggling should do what they need to do to be ok in my opinion.
Let’s not forget that Muslims got a few hours notice about Eid. I know plenty of people who thought that Muslims had no right to ‘whinge’, perhaps because they couldn’t give a shit about others and thought it would all be fine in time for Christmas.
