@Bathroom12345

Dont - I dont know anyone who has stocked up for Xmas in Nov. Not one person....
I did

Its just dated stuff I need now, potato salad (ehich i can make obvs), dip etc

Frenchdressing · 21/12/2020 11:11

Busy but think it’s Xmas busy at our Sainsbury’s. Had everything I needed.

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 11:11

I know that Waitrose in Saltash! I have relatives down there. Its a very nice one but those poor staff trying to sort everyone out. The sweets and mince pies go down very well in Waitrose. Last year when it wasnt so bad at Xmas people were complaining no one was giving out any sweets!

I do wonder though - people who decide to go shopping midday in the middle of a pandemic and in the run up to Xmas. Do they really think it will be quiet in say a large Tesco superstore?

I also wonder when I am leaving a large shopping centre at say lunchtime having been there early and seeing a large queue of cars to get in when I am leaving... Do those people think, maybe I should be coming earlier next time? Do they get annoyed at having to queue?

Its the same every Saturday. I know I need to be there by say 0930 to be able to park easily yet it seems a complete surprise to some that Sat afternoon in a city centre car park is so busy.

Abject apologies if im now the 100th person to tell you!

Fattoushka · 21/12/2020 11:13

Tesco quiet this morning, about 8am, huge crates of veg. There shall be no shortage of sprouts!
Will need to nip for milk, bread and a bit of fruit on wed/Thurs but otherwise I’m glad I went early today as I couldn’t get a delivery or click and collect at all.

Circumlocutious · 21/12/2020 11:14

@Ifailed

just returned from Sainsbury's. Notable that people were buying loads of fresh salad stuff, presumably because that's one thing that will bit hit by closure of French border. Whether they eat it all before it goes off is debatable.
Apparently we’ve become a nation of overenthusiastic veg eaters.
TenThousandSteps · 21/12/2020 11:14

Yes, went to local High Street Sainsburys as it opened at 6am. Absolutely empty. More staff than customers.

HarrietOh · 21/12/2020 11:15

Tesco busy this morning (10ish) but in a normal Christmas busy way, everyone buying cheese, crisps etc.

MichelleofzeResistance · 21/12/2020 11:15

Our Tesco quiet at 7.45. Meat joints, turkeys and veg piled high, staff everywhere looking braced and ready, but it was all very calm. I've seen it busier at that time on normal days (since this is an average shopping time of day for me!)

Fingers crossed it continues to stay calm.

Porcupineinwaiting · 21/12/2020 11:16

I'm not sure you'd be able to spot panic buying round here. Supermarkets always get crazy in the run up to Christmas in a normal year.

KatherineOfGaunt · 21/12/2020 11:16

I was at our local Sainsbury's at 7:30am. One employee said there had been queues at 6am when they opened. But while it was busier than you'd usually get for a Monday morning, it wasn't packed and there was plenty of stock. I didn't see anyone panic buying, either.

chomalungma · 21/12/2020 11:16

I have to say it seemed quite sociable at 5am in Tesco. Lots of their shoppers all busy getting the food picked for orders. Loud Christmas music playing, lots of chat going on.

rollinggreenhills · 21/12/2020 11:16

I haven't been to the supermarket, but I have been to the post office. Shock

WhereYouLeftIt · 21/12/2020 11:17

Went to Sainsbury's at 6am, nice and quiet, busiest aisles were the fruit & veg, especially around the parsnips Grin. Oh, and the fancy desserts. There were almost as many staff on the floor as customers, picking orders I think. By the time I left at 7am there were more customers, but looked like normal Christmas shopping to me, no panic buying.

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 21/12/2020 11:17

I went to Aldi at 9am. Very quiet.
Asda about 10am. Also very quiet.

MarinPrime · 21/12/2020 11:18

Fine when I went to Tesco at 9am, same as usual.
The tabloids will be disappointed they can't get pics of mayhem in the aisles and bare shelves.

CrispySeaweedIsReallyCabbage · 21/12/2020 11:18

@rollinggreenhills

I haven't been to the supermarket, but I have been to the post office. Shock
I'm amazed you made it out alive! I had to break up a fight between two pensioners there a couple of weeks ago. Not even kidding.
cologne4711 · 21/12/2020 11:19

I just walked down my local high street. Queue outside Waitrose but not the longest I've seen. There's often a queue there because the security guard only lets about 3 people in at once.

M&S about 4 people waiting to go in.

Sainsburys one person waiting to go in but they are probably a bit too lax and it looked quite busy inside. Fruit area a little empty in places.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 21/12/2020 11:19

Went to the Big tesco today and told DH we should go at 7.00 am. Insisted 10 am was fine. Well. the queue around the car park made me feel very very uncomfortable. I just didn't want to be in a heaving supermarket. Plus, despite having given him gloves, he comes back with a bare hands on an uncleaned trolley handle. then holds the inside of his mask.
So I'm going back at 6.00 am tomorrow. On my own since DH is v cross. I don't know whether I should have just stayed or not.

cologne4711 · 21/12/2020 11:19

No queue for the post office but there was a queue for the bank which I've not seen before.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 21/12/2020 11:20

Just to say a fight almost broke out in the queue with two women shouting about correct mask wearing. That also made me want to leave and come back v early tomorrow.

randomsabreuse · 21/12/2020 11:21

Lidl was fine, loads of Turkeys but I went before the booze section was open. Was getting busier when I left though

MintyCedric · 21/12/2020 11:22

I picked up my click and collect from Tesco this morning.

Car park wasn't unreasonably heaving at 9.40ish, didn't have to queue to pick up and got everything I'd ordered which was a pleasant surprise as a lot appeared to be unavailable when I finalised the order last night.

KatySun · 21/12/2020 11:24

I have just been to Waitrose as could not face Tesco (already stressed and they play Christmas music). I usually do the shop first thing Sunday morning but was too tired yesterday (a decision I regretted this morning). It was Saturday afternoon busy I would say, with a queue round the store when I came out. But as a PP says that is because there is a security guard on the door and they don’t let many people in. Only bought what we will actually manage to eat. There were no continental cheeses left in that section but that maybe because they had an offer on.

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 11:24

What about correct masking wearing? You put it on over your mouth AND nose.

How is that so difficiult. I bet the fight was about noses poking out...
