Is it hell or is it ok??

Today was due to be the day for 'the big Christmas shop'

I'm going to look like a proper panic buying twat with my loaded Christmas trolley aren't I 🤦🏻‍♀️

Does all the food then get thrown away?

Yes, all of it. Everything goes in the bin.

nosswith · 21/12/2020 10:59

I went about an hour ago, everything I wanted was there, the worst thing was having to walk there in the rain. Local high street was quiet apart from the queue at a bank which does not open until 10.

wonderstuff · 21/12/2020 10:59

Dh currently queuing at Sainsbury's, but got parked so not too bad. French have announced they will get a solution to allow people to travel within a few hours, so should all be fine.
Feel so sorry for the poor truck drivers stuck on the motorway, must be really grim. UK truck facilities are poor normal times.

christinarossetti19 · 21/12/2020 10:59

I went to the local medium sized Tesco this morning in London.

Dead as a dodo. Quieter than usual after-school-droop-off levels.

Fully stocked shelves. Plenty of fresh produce.

User158340 · 21/12/2020 11:00

I think more people are weary of going in shops at the moment. Loads will be trying to isolate before Friday and have already got their shopping done.

frustrationcentral · 21/12/2020 11:00

My parents went to Waitrose at 8.30 and apparently it was worse than March's panic buying - nothing left on the shelf

I'm going tomorrow morning to M&S then have our main Christmas shop coming on Wednesday evening from Tesco

OrangeSamphire · 21/12/2020 11:00

I went to our local Waitrose (Saltash) at 7.30 this morning expecting it to be quiet. Not so.

The car park was full and the queues were longer than they have ever been at any stage of the pandemic. It was totally nuts inside and nobody was social distancing.

I haven’t seen it like this before. It was stressful and sad.

The car park was full of vehicles with roof boxes on, so I suspect a lot of holidaymakers and second homers Sad

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/12/2020 11:01

Just back from Waitrose. Short queue but is chucking it down here so not very pleasant.

MrsMiaWallis · 21/12/2020 11:01

@helloxhristmas

Husband is currently queuing to get into Waitrose, he reckons 200 in front of him when he arrived. They are handing out mince pies and water.
Shock
EvilPea · 21/12/2020 11:01

@SquirtleSquad

That reassuring! What sort of dates do the turkeys that are already on the shelves have on them?
Mines boxing day
harridan50 · 21/12/2020 11:02

Yes Waitrose at 8 no queue everything available quite calm

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 11:02

Gile - Ha Ha. Honestly this weekend has probably been terrible for all of us. Cancelled plans, having to tell our elderly relatives that we cannot pick them up, they cannot stay, and Xmas is cancelled.

Cancelled a long haul holiday completely. It has been cancelled 3 times already and now I will be getting my money back (but I just want to go!).

Working straight through this pandemic. I am now just working part-time (but it feels full time sometimes!) and really feel for people who own restaurants and bars and the airlines and holiday industry.

nannynick · 21/12/2020 11:03

My local CoOp had run out of Carrots and Parsnips. They were busy stocking shelves of bread, ready meals, fruit. So I don't know if veg delivery had come in and not been put out yet or if it was put out but went very quickly, or did not come in at all.

winechateauxjoy · 21/12/2020 11:03

Why does it always seem to be Waitrose with the queues? I have six supermarkets within a 5 min drive from my house - plus an M and S with a fairly sizable food section. The only one that ever has a queue is Waitrose. I just don't understand why people don't drive on to another supermarket - plenty of choice.

muddyford · 21/12/2020 11:03

I went to Morrison's at 7.45 and it was pretty busy but fully stocked. No queues. Planning a dawn raid on Sainsbury's on Wednesday to get yet more milk and a loaf of bread.

mrshonda · 21/12/2020 11:04

Friend was just food shopping city centre nearby - car parks busy but supermarket about average.

EvilPea · 21/12/2020 11:05

Why does it always seem to be Waitrose with the queues?

I wonder if it’s a “treat ourselves at Christmas” thing. Or maybe they’ve had fewer delivery slots.
Whilst m and s is arguably equal, you can’t get your paxo and warburtons there

CarolEffingBaskin · 21/12/2020 11:05

Absolutely fine in our Sainsbury’s at 10, and the home bargains round the corner was virtually empty (of people, shelves full), half an hour later. I needed washing powder, and snacks to keep the children quiet because all they do is eat.

cobblers123 · 21/12/2020 11:05

I was in our local Lidl at 8.40am and it wasn't busy at all, just like going early on a normal weekday.

Fresh turkeys were in short supply and there was a huge one that cost £40 still on the shelf.

Managed to get what I wanted mainly, not too bothered if I can't get anything else, have enough to take us over Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

EvilPea · 21/12/2020 11:06

Waitrose also seem to be hotter on the store intake, i was stopped from going in one in October as it was busy, I hadn’t seen that anywhere since April.

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 21/12/2020 11:06

Maybe Waitrose let fewer people in at a time?
I don't shop there so I don't know!

MsAnnFrope · 21/12/2020 11:07

Yep I did Morrisons at 9am (the usual time for my weekly shop) and it was busier than usual but they opened all the tills and no-one was being a dick.
I got most of our food for the week but will need to do a fruit and milk stock up. I'm going to the Northern Waitrose for a cheese board as their cheese and wine is the best l but I'll do that one evening!

Ifailed · 21/12/2020 11:09

just returned from Sainsbury's. Notable that people were buying loads of fresh salad stuff, presumably because that's one thing that will bit hit by closure of French border. Whether they eat it all before it goes off is debatable.

timeforawine · 21/12/2020 11:09

How well stocked were the Aldi's at 7am as we're going at 7 tomorrow, hoping they have re-stocked fully from todays shoppers

EndoplasmicReticulum · 21/12/2020 11:10

Just come back from local shops and Tesco express no busier than usual for Monday morning.
