Is it hell or is it ok??

Today was due to be the day for 'the big Christmas shop'

I'm going to look like a proper panic buying twat with my loaded Christmas trolley aren't I 🤦🏻‍♀️

I went to Lidl in plymiuth it was fine and they had everything

Backbee · 21/12/2020 10:43

It was suspiciously quiet here, I was expecting it to be busy but hardly anyone about. There is good online delivery availability here so maybe people have booked that? Was hugely busy over the weekend though apparently, expecting the usual Christmas rush over the next few days. The few people I saw seemed to be buying Christmas stuff.

LaetenturCoeli · 21/12/2020 10:43

I have just returned from Waitrose. It was all a bit meh. Nobody panic buying anything. One person in front of me at the till queue. No queues outside. Just like a normal day, really.

Our supermarkets are the best in the world but as they are one of the only things open now we need to be extra careful. Dont lets spoil it now because some people cannot be bothered to use a mask.

I fully accept there are a very small amount of people who really cannot wear one however there are lots of options:

Get someone else to do your shopping
Online shopping
NHS volunteers will do shopping
Get a friend to do it
Get a relative/neighbour to do it

I am putting yet another tin hat on but I think we need to ramp this up now.

MobLife · 21/12/2020 10:44

Should imagine that by the end of the day some arrangements will have been made in regards to the Dover and freight situation-will be along the lines of rapid testing for lorry drivers I reckon.

Went to Tescos at 8.30am. It was certainly busier, but not too horrendous. Had planned to go anyway for as a few essentials but I have to admit I picked up their bags of potatoes, carrots, sproats and parsnips as I walked past. It'd be nice to have some dips and other nibbles (but we can make if necessary), but I'm now in the position I don't have to go back in when it's busier later in the week.

Circumlocutious · 21/12/2020 10:45

Went to the local co-op this morning. Very quiet - it's like MN is another world, everyone just pottering around picking up their usual ready meals. Just made sure we have enough fruit and veg for the week, especially things like oranges and broccoli that are imported and are bound to be lacking in a few days. It's quite striking how many of the items come from European countries.

I was expecting this to happen at the end of the year but this came out of the blue. Hope everyone gets what they need.

@TheDizzyRascal

wow! I'm not planning on going until Wednesday evening so I think you're very organised going today! x
My choice was today or Christmas Eve! (have to work the next two days before I'm off until the 29th!)

Drive to 3 different ones at 8.30 and couldn't even get in car parks
Gave up and went home

The M&S cashier said by far the best time is first thing - as in when they open.

Flowerpot345 · 21/12/2020 10:47

Plan to reopen border should come within hours apparently.
Glad things seem pretty normal.

kowari · 21/12/2020 10:47

Aldi was busy at 0930. No shortages and got in and out quickly though.

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 10:48

Flower - yes, they will do something..

PilatesPeach · 21/12/2020 10:50

I drove past Lidl in Crowthorne half an hour ago it was really quiet could see the tills and car park.

mostlydrinkstea · 21/12/2020 10:50

Lidl this morning was busy at 7am. It was very focused. No pottering. They had loads of stock and I'm now sorted until after the weekend.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 10:52

I went to Sainsbury's in South London at 8am this morning and it was absolutely fine. Busier than it usually is at that time (ie not empty!) but no queues.

Smallinthesmoke · 21/12/2020 10:52

Went to Waitrose at 0800. Not too bad. If you are shopping today though I agree with others, keep an eye on the products with short dates.Lots of stuff on the shelves goes off before Xmas eg custard, cream... Hmm

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 10:53

I've got everything I need now but I might go to Aldi to see if I can score some more potted cheddar tomorrow morning 😂

Fluffypyjamasandgin · 21/12/2020 10:54

I went this morning at 6am - Tesco and m&s - and was home by 7am. It wasn't too bad. There were quite a few others there, but I got in and out pretty quick. Didn't see any panic buyers and there was loads of loo roll/pasta/flour/the usual shite people panic buy.
(I didn't have time to wait for the wholesaler to open and I've got a food biz before anyone accuses me of panic buying)

Frazzled2207 · 21/12/2020 10:55

everyone needs to calm down. The french have confirmed they are looking at reopening the border within a few hours. Meanwhile supermarkets have confirmed they have more than enough stocks to last until christmas. There will only be a problem with supply if people panic buy. I hope supermarkets stop people doing this asap.

giletrouge · 21/12/2020 10:55

@justanotherneighinparadise good luck you brave soul. If you don't get back ever, who do you want informed? (And can I have the contents of your fridge...Grin?)

helloxhristmas · 21/12/2020 10:56

Husband is currently queuing to get into Waitrose, he reckons 200 in front of him when he arrived. They are handing out mince pies and water.

NamechangedforAIBU · 21/12/2020 10:57

I have no idea why people go so mad....surely it's a normal shop with a few Christmas food differences? After all the same size household for most as usual.

Does all the food then get thrown away?

balzamico · 21/12/2020 10:57

Morrison's was busier when I went in at 7 than when I came out. Not rammed busy though just a few more than usual.
Shelves were all full

Oysterbabe · 21/12/2020 10:58

I can see our local one out of the window and there's no queue, car park is about a third full.
