Is it hell or is it ok??

Today was due to be the day for 'the big Christmas shop'

I'm going to look like a proper panic buying twat with my loaded Christmas trolley aren't I 🤦🏻‍♀️

@cravingmilkshake

Fingers crossed it's ok. Ours is tomorrow evening and have nothing left in the house so hope we haven't left it too late!
Same.

@Bathroom12345

Dont - I dont know anyone who has stocked up for Xmas in Nov. Not one person....
Really? Most people I know started buying long-store things like drinks, crisps, freezer stuff. Admittedly a small sample though.
Laurendelight · 21/12/2020 10:04

36 trolleys in front of me at Waitrose at 8.15. Controlled numbers though so apart from a twat man in a stupid Aussie hat everyone else was keeping socially distanced. Same queue when I left an hour later. Tier 4.

Vivarium · 21/12/2020 10:04

*somebody who stocked up for Xmas in November, that is

YourWurstNightmare · 21/12/2020 10:06

Southeast London. M&S, Sainsbos, and Tesco all completely dead and well stocked. Probably helped by the rain.

listsandbudgets · 21/12/2020 10:07

We went to Lidl at 8am I dont think there was more than 20 people in there although it seemed to be building up when we left. It was really peaceful and no one seemed to be panicing. We did our normal Christmas shop minus lemonade which they'd mysteriously run out of and cranberries which I don't think they sell anyway.

At least I think we got everything my list disappeared. If we don't have it we will simply have to live without it...

I think either early in the day or later in the evening is the best bet

SansaSnark · 21/12/2020 10:07

Went to the large out of town asda to buy food for the 4 days I now can't spend with family. It was busy but normal before Christmas busy, not insane. Shelves seemed well stocked and there was nothing I wanted that I couldn't get. Nobody seemed to be panic buying.

I was worried before I went but it was fine.

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 10:07

I am also thinking - those older people couple shopping this morning. They are the most at risk of this pandemic! The more I think about it the more angry I get. I wonder if back in March they had said all over 75's are special and will need some lockdown measures to enable the country to continue working, being educated.

There would be complete uproar and they wouldnt do it anyway. My DS worked at a big supermarket during the last lockdown. The Manager had to go to the retirement home next to the shop and request that the older people didnt come out every single day, to get a few things. Eventually he gave up because they werent listening so introduced a over 75's hour and even then someone asked for a coffee whilst in the queue, someone complained that the cafe was no longer open and someone asked for the hour to be later on so they could get a few bits done before they came to do their daily shop.

Its really shit for all of us.

frosted232 · 21/12/2020 10:07

Tesco staff here and our store has been okay this morning. No one is panic buying, it's the usual Christmas shop we see every year. For people that want to avoid the dot com pickers then don't go early, they are so busy this year because there's extra home deliveries and click and collect.

TheChristmasPrincess · 21/12/2020 10:07

I was at Tesco between 8:30 and 9am to get some Christmas bits. It was busier than I expected but not rammed.

DH went to Aldi to do the full shop at the same time and he said it was fairly quiet.

KitKatastrophe · 21/12/2020 10:08

@StopSquirtingBleachOnCaneToads

I would expect the supermarket to be heaving and the shelves to be pretty bare this close to Christmas anyway. Not sure it needs to be attributed to panic buyers.
I agree, this week would be the busiest of the year anyway!
MrsStarwars · 21/12/2020 10:09

I went to Aldi at 7.30am and then Sainsbury’s by about 8.15. Not very busy, everything well stocked, shelves piled high!
Just got my Xmas shop and food for this week, kids eat me out of house and home!

timetest · 21/12/2020 10:10

I’m in Kent. I was at a large Tesco at 6.30 there were other shoppers but it was not busy. No empty shelves and everyone in masks behaving responsibly. No loo roll hoarding observed.

Skipsurvey · 21/12/2020 10:13

hopefully people have realised that the uk has warehouses with food in it already

HeronLanyon · 21/12/2020 10:13

I was checked out at Waitrose central London by foot. Calm. Good stocks of fruit and veg to 26 or 27 December. Less choice. No sign of empty shelves. Glad went early as assume this may change. One staff member said yesterday had been ‘worst day ever’.
Op - no one will think anything. We’re all in the same situation. Many can’t get deliveries and have fresh stuff still to get if not everything !
Good luck all.

SansaSnark · 21/12/2020 10:13

Yeah I do wonder why people insist on taking two adults or a bored teen food shopping at the moment!

Utterlyshafted · 21/12/2020 10:15

Local Tesco’s isn’t busy hete

Burnthurst187 · 21/12/2020 10:15

Went to Lidl at 8:00am, very quiet

Utterlyshafted · 21/12/2020 10:15

*here

Justgivemewine · 21/12/2020 10:15

lots of people arent wearing masks with or without a valid reason. My sister lives abroad and they dont allow anyone in without one in shops/banks

It a strange turn of events when you can’t go into a bank without wearing mask 😆

Iwasonceabrownie · 21/12/2020 10:15

Went to Morrisons at 8.30. It's wasn't to bad at all, I was surprise, I didn't even have to queue for a till. Shelves packed high with fruit, veg etc. Lots of turkeys.

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 10:16

A round of applause for our supermarkets who often get forgotton.

I know from personal experience that its not easy to keep all the shelves full and to stop the selfish twats stock piling. They have been told to not challenge people and try and appeal to their better natures.

The reason that the selfish buggers arent stock piling the loo rolls is that they are still working through the ones they got in March. Where do they put them all. If they are in the garage then I hope the mice get them!

Benjispruce2 · 21/12/2020 10:18

Yes I was at Morrison’s at 8am. Out by 8.20. Was busier than that time usually but fine.

WinterIsGone · 21/12/2020 10:18

For anyone interested, you can search for the particular supermarket on Google, and (on a desktop) in the right-hand bar, it often gives you a graph for how busy the supermarket is. (Actually, for our Tesco Extra, I think it includes the petrol station.) I don't know how accurate it is though Grin

Oooooh! That’s a great tip!
