Is it hell or is it ok??

Today was due to be the day for 'the big Christmas shop'

I'm going to look like a proper panic buying twat with my loaded Christmas trolley aren't I 🤦🏻‍♀️

What a pointless thread. It's almost as if some people think that levels of busy-ness are identical in every supermarket, in every part of the country.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 21/12/2020 09:40

SE. T2
Lidl at 7 was busy but no queues. Some gaps for things like chutney, Marie Rose sauce and cheese had a limited range. Freezers had gaps.
Fresh food and meat was heaving with produce.

Tesco at 8 was super busy. Everything in stock though.

Our supermarkets are usually like this at Christmas though.

Rudolphian · 21/12/2020 09:42

Drove past a Lidl and Home Bargains around 8.15 on the way to work.
Looked fine.

Piggyinblankets · 21/12/2020 09:42

I went this morning. Busier than normal for 8 am but no queue. Stock was fine but sell by dates veeeeery short.

StopSquirtingBleachOnCaneToads · 21/12/2020 09:43

I would expect the supermarket to be heaving and the shelves to be pretty bare this close to Christmas anyway. Not sure it needs to be attributed to panic buyers.

Rudolphian · 21/12/2020 09:43

But then even last time.
People didn't really panic buy around here. All the supermarkets were fine. There was only really a couple of days of empty shelves before they got better again.

MoltenLasagne · 21/12/2020 09:43

Was fine this morning at our Sainsburys, got all my Christmas bits I needed (plus an emergency Toblerone and Terry's chocolate orange).

No-one seemed to be getting anything other than Christmas food, no panic buying by the looks of it (or at least no-one in the pasta and tinned goods aisles) and everyone very cheery. That's Tier 3 W Yorkshire.

HitthatroadJack · 21/12/2020 09:43

The week before Christmas is ALWAYS mayhem. Every single year.

The day the supermarkets reopen after Boxing Day the shelves are ALWAYS empty.

No need to start panicking.

EvilPea · 21/12/2020 09:44

I went to aldi at 7, queued for it to open. Busy first 10 minutes then nothing, as I was leaving people were Slowly trickling in. As were the lorries.
My plan was either to go first thing or last thing.

DollyParton2 · 21/12/2020 09:44

If anyone happens to go to Tesco could you please tell me if they have these crisps in stock?!
www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/306799922

I’m absolutely addicted but they’re out of stock on website - holding out hope they’ve got them in store... but our Tesco has what looks like 1hr queues to get in right now

Me! Went to M&S Food Hall. I was there 0700. Lots of couple shopping yet again. They really need to think about telling (and I do mean telling) people to only come in as singletons. Its not a bloody day out/family occasion. It was pouring down and when I left people were queueing. Having the whole family in means the queues go down far more slowly.

The shelves were beautifully stacked and the staff said there was plenty of food. Lots of friendly staff as well.

PLEASE CAN WE NOT HAVE THE STOCK PILLING OF THINGS LIKE TOILET ROLLS JUST LIKE LAST TIME!

Its very selfish and not needed.

I know I need to get my tin hat on re the couple shopping but I am bloody fed up of people thinking their needs trumps everyone else.

One guy didnt have a mask either. God knows whether he is an exception but I think we now need to say no mask/no entry. There will need to be other ways for those people to move around whilst we are in the middle of a pandemic. I am sorry but lots of people arent wearing masks with or without a valid reason. My sister lives abroad and they dont allow anyone in without one in shops/banks etc.

ivfbabymomma1 · 21/12/2020 09:45

My mum is in Sainsbury's now doing her Xmas shop and it's fine with no empty shelves

MobLife · 21/12/2020 09:45

I'm in a Tier 4 area and the panic buying was terrible when the first lockdown came in to force, second time it was non existent

Sounds like there's just normal Christmas shopping going from what everyone is saying

thalassoma · 21/12/2020 09:46

Went to Waitrose at 8am and it was busy in a Monday before Xmas way, not in a panic buying way.

All shelves fully stocked.

Hapixmas · 21/12/2020 09:46

Went to tesco between 8 and 9ish, no queue to get in, no queue to pay. It was so quiet. I've never seen it that quiet at Christmas before, very surprised!

ScrapThatThen · 21/12/2020 09:46

Fine at Lidl but this is always a busy few days

Zilla1 · 21/12/2020 09:47

Every shopper looks like a panic buyer so unless you go for two trolleys full of loo roll and dried pasta, every shopper behind you in the queue will just dislike you for being ahead of them in the queue, not for panic buying.

Good luck.

CrispySeaweedIsReallyCabbage · 21/12/2020 09:47

I'm thinking of going soon, also for Christmas food shop...will report back. If it's hell, I'm not going in though and will go back again in the dead of night.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 21/12/2020 09:48

I agree there are short dates on everything. Tesco’ offers on sides of salmon , beef and lamb joints were ALL 23rd/24th. Same with cream and fresh party food.

ThePittts · 21/12/2020 09:48

Went to morrisons this morning, normal time that i go, a lot busier than a normal monday, but to be expected this week anyway. No empty shelves

BrutusMcDogface · 21/12/2020 09:49

I was going to pick up my toy shop order this morning but think I’ll go at 9pm instead, and pop into Aldi then. Hopefully the rest of the town hasn’t had the same idea!

lovemenomore · 21/12/2020 09:50

I was in Asda at 8:15 just to get some bits for lunch today - was fine!

chomalungma · 21/12/2020 09:50

Noticed the short sell by dates ad well.

Roominmyhouse · 21/12/2020 09:50

Slightly nervous about my Sainsbury’s order which isn’t coming until between 10 and 11pm tomorrow! But apparently the store is open until midnight so if there is anything significant missing or subbed I will have to dash down there and see what I can get instead.

The most important thing is that I already have 2 packets of pigs in blankets in the freezer.

Frouby · 21/12/2020 09:50

Ive been to a biggish Morrisons for the scheduled Christmas veg and stuff shop. Was there for 8.15ish and it was already getting busy, tho I don't think that's particularly unusual for this time of year. Fucktons of stock, no one buying massive trolleys full, tho I didn't see any smaller turkeys left, just medium and large.
