Surely we’ll all be in full lockdown very soon?

With the recent travel bans and now freight banned from France, Hancock saying the new variant is ‘out of control’ etc - how long can it be until the whole UK is in lockdown? A few days maybe?

I think before NY the whole country will be T4. Possibly Boxing Day?
And I think there is a real chance schools will be shut in January. Which will be hard for (any) government to announce, as I firmly believe keeping them open is the best thing for our children’s health and education. But, I suspect this strain is already all over the country and the schools would have to shut anyway due to lack of staff etc ..

TimeQuest01 · 20/12/2020 23:03

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss, thanks!

MercyBooth · 20/12/2020 23:03

I hope they dont remove the support bubbles.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 20/12/2020 23:04

He said next review is 30/12 which I expect will be schools closed to 11/1, then online until possibly mass testing of pupils up and running? We always seem to follow Scotland, eventually.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 20/12/2020 23:07

I think so, from 27th/28th. I think they are not telling us yet in case people think "Fuck it, I'll do what I want over Christmas if they're going to lockdown straight after"

MiddlesexGirl · 20/12/2020 23:11

There are some differences between tier 4 and full lockdown. eg. Outside sports like golf, riding, tennis, fishing are still permitted with restrictions.
Probably differences in what counts as non-essential retail too.

Nousernameforme · 20/12/2020 23:12

Isnt there a tier review for anyone not in tier 4 on wednesday. We are supposed to be weekly reviews now so 23rd to come into effect on the saturday like last week

MrsTravers · 20/12/2020 23:12

I will be so upset if schools close. Both for the children and for me. And for my clients,
as that will be the end of my self-employment. Can't juggle it all again, I've only just caught up the backlog from Spring/Summer.

DecemberDiana · 20/12/2020 23:17

I came on to declaim: alas, alack!

But now see I was trumped in advance by alackaday..

Ilovemypantry · 20/12/2020 23:21

@MGMidget

We're in tier 4 and I predict with the escape of Londoners on the trains yesterday than many parts of the country will be put in 'tier 4' on the 30th. That is almost a full lockdown - the main difference seems to be that services like dentists and vets can continue for now along with some childcare services and education in person for some year groups when schools due to return. I suspect that many year groups will be doing on-line learning for January and February at least when they review on 30th December.
Vets were always open even during full lockdown. You can’t have no medical care for animals. Just means you can’t see a vet face to face, you have to wait outside for your pet .

@MyNameForToday1980

We might even get an 'alack' if we're lucky *@StealthPolarBear*
Wow. I have not seen oor heard anyone use the word 'alack' for years, alas and alack, I'd forgotten that phrase. Slight derailment there. Sorry all.
bananaskinsnomnom · 20/12/2020 23:21

I think the schools will be shut in January, at least for the first half. I didn’t think so until this week. I know they say they won’t shut them at all - but I think they will. I just don’t think they can bring it down enough without, if they’ve lost control to the extent they believe they have.

(Btw will state its not something I want and I don’t honestly know if it’s the right thing or not, it’s just what I think will happen)

I’m preparing for the next few weeks at least to be like March and April were. Not in a panic buying way but just mentally preparing and I’ve never been more relieved that for once I was organised for Christmas!

flatpack1 · 20/12/2020 23:22

@StealthPolarBear

I'm waiting for an alackaday. I will die a happy woman.
Me too. Love an alackaday Grin

Many people will think that even if there wasn’t going to be a full lockdown after Xmas. Those people are the reason why we will have to.
Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 20/12/2020 23:24

I think everywhere will go up a Tier on Weds. Either midnight that night or midnight Xmas Day/Sat.

famousforwrongreason · 20/12/2020 23:25

Just rtft, turns out I wasn't derailing, alack has already been bored by other posters.

Covidnomore · 20/12/2020 23:26

It's hard for me to accept a full lockdown when the numbers where I am are so low.

On the other hand this new strain and the increase in R is very worrying.

I suspect there will be a lockdown very soon, yes!

DecemberDiana · 20/12/2020 23:27

A hive mind moment.

ktp100 · 20/12/2020 23:27

What exactly is the difference between tier 4 and a full lockdown? none that I can see.

The previous two have not worked so what exactly will another one achieve?

The first one was effective but it would mean closing schools again.

Hearnoevilspeaknoevil · 20/12/2020 23:38

@RedToothBrush. In awful times thank you for making me smile. Your comment re Boris is spot on

justasking111 · 20/12/2020 23:40

Well in Wales we were not told until 5pm that lockdown would be at midnight, so do not expect much warning.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 20/12/2020 23:43

@Puzzledandpissedoff

The previous two have not worked so what exactly will another one achieve?

Nothing whatsoever unless it went on for months, and even then it would just return once we re-opened

Unless the vaccines prove to be a magic bullet of course, but that's an unknown - and if they're not we'll just have to get on with liviing alongside the virus

Lockdown down achieves what you said slowing down the virus. As people don't want Grannie's death or their child not getting medical help if needed what other choice do we have.

I follow the rules but am not afraid of the virus on a personal level. Most people I know are very afraid. Sometimes for good reason and sometimes not.

Unless we have a successful vaccination program, herd immunity or people say sod it lets take the risk all we have is lockdown and restrictions.

PandemicPavolova · 20/12/2020 23:43

I don't know, but as an aside I ha to visit two local hospitals on Friday. 3 different departments and non of them had a single window open in waiting rooms, it beggars belief really. Obviously we are masked up but really! And yes I looked and they did have catches and looked like they could.
Why isn't the ventilation directive being led by hospitals?

MadameBlobby · 20/12/2020 23:45

Just keep everything shut and throw everything at this bloody vaccine. The uncertainty is the worst.

GabsAlot · 20/12/2020 23:48

i always said there would be a lockdown in jan i think it will be 27th now
