Surely we’ll all be in full lockdown very soon?

With the recent travel bans and now freight banned from France, Hancock saying the new variant is ‘out of control’ etc - how long can it be until the whole UK is in lockdown? A few days maybe?

I think we’ll go into one on 26th.....for two weeks.

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 20/12/2020 22:41

@Requinblanc

What exactly is the difference between tier 4 and a full lockdown? none that I can see.

The previous two have not worked so what exactly will another one achieve?

The first one worked well at reducing the R number and amount of cases. of course cases rose after the rules around mixing were relaxed.

Second one didn't work, but mostly from what I saw around my town it wasn't taken seriously anyway.

Scautish · 20/12/2020 22:42

Yes there will be another lockdown and suspect it will go well into Feb. Will depend hugely on how much people stick to rules. A large number won’t due to ignorance/stupidity or selfishness. Arseholes.

PJsEveryday · 20/12/2020 22:45

Our tier 4 is nonsense. (Scotland) . The only sectors that are affected are hospitality and small independent clothes and gift shops. Pretty much everything else is open. And folks are shopping at them like everything is normal. Its a bloody joke.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 20/12/2020 22:48

@MGMidget

We're in tier 4 and I predict with the escape of Londoners on the trains yesterday than many parts of the country will be put in 'tier 4' on the 30th. That is almost a full lockdown - the main difference seems to be that services like dentists and vets can continue for now along with some childcare services and education in person for some year groups when schools due to return. I suspect that many year groups will be doing on-line learning for January and February at least when they review on 30th December.
Yep

Probably move the tiers faster though. So 25th or 27th.

Schools won't be back the earliest until end of January in most areas if not all. I think our London schools a lot later. So sad for the kids.

QueenPaws · 20/12/2020 22:49

I'm guessing after Christmas and they'll call it tier 4 for everywhere but not a "lockdown" so they can avoid saying third lockdown

scaevola · 20/12/2020 22:49

If you look at the graphs, there was a definite dip in numbers for lockdown 2 - the numbers if we hadn't had that down turn don't bear thinking about. But they didn't stay down, and the rapidity of the return tomlsrge rises has clearly been a cause for concern

MissDollyMix · 20/12/2020 22:51

I’ve been saying it will happen by the end of the week. DH disagrees and doesn’t think we will have a national lockdown for the time being. I am also beginning to think that the Christmas school break should be extended by a week or so, just until we have a better grasp on the current situation. I don’t say that lightly but I’d rather an extra week or two of school holidays now than extended home schooling later on.

Hollyhead · 20/12/2020 22:52

For the love of good I need hairdressers to stay open until jan 2nd. I live in one of the few areas where cases still stable! Keeping everything crossed for just a rise to tier 3!

Scautish · 20/12/2020 22:52

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum

I agree re schools - perhaps even not back until after Feb half term?

Thecherryontheverytop · 20/12/2020 22:52

Please God no..I cant cope..but yes I fully understand that we need one. For someone like me who has stuck to the rules right from the beginning, it gives me full on anxiety to think we may have to lockdown again.
I do think if we'd had a harsher lockdown the first time then we may not have been in this situation right now.
I give Boris til the 27th to make the announcement.

Melange99 · 20/12/2020 22:52

@MGMidget Londoners have stayed put, it is people from outside the SE who might be living in the area who are travelling back to see their families, Londoner/SE families are in London and SE.

That aside, give it a week, the whole country will be lockdowned. Regional ones don't work. Horsham, a few miles from Tier 4, was rammed today with Xmas shoppers who travelled from Tier 4. People will just travel to an area with less restrictions if their own is all shut. Do lockdowns work, temporarily I suppose to ease beds situation for NHS, but not permanent solution. There is no solution except time plus vaccines.

2021 is not going to be great I fear. I was feeling quite chipper recently, thought we had broken the back of it, but this plus BREXIT is going to be harsh.

@StealthPolarBear

I'm waiting for an alackaday. I will die a happy woman.
Alas Alack Amat Amamus Amatis Amant

Which is actually about as good as that twat's Latin really is.

Frazzled2207 · 20/12/2020 22:52

I reckon everywhere will be either tier 3 or 4 within days. Agree with pp if they keep to the tier system they can avoid calling it a lockdown but afaik the rules in tier 4 are the same as they were in lockdown 2.

Frazzled2207 · 20/12/2020 22:54

The thing is most of the country right now (apart from tier 4) are rushing around doing last minute xmas shopping etc. If it was any other time of year tiers 2/3 would stand a chance of working

middleager · 20/12/2020 22:55

Not long, but it's needed. Tier 3 here, major city, and far too many people still not bothering with masks in busy stores, or walking round with masks under their noses.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 20/12/2020 22:55

I think tier 4 = lockdown 2 rules

Future lockdowns (or tier 5 if they don't want to do the whole country) will I guess include limits of amount of exercise/recreation with firmer ''stay local', no gatherings except funerals, and online schooling (onsite only for younger DC of keyworkers, socially vulnerable pupils, and older pupils with inadequate home tech), a ban on travel out of tier 5 areas (with at least some enforcement) and reduction in size/scope of bubbles

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/12/2020 22:56

People will just travel to an area with less restrictions if their own is all shut.

Exactly what is happening where I live, we are surrounded by tier 3 places and they're all coming for shopping days out to our tier 2 place. I know because I work in retail and customers tell me.

It's frustrating, and I'd rather everywhere locked down than have this tier business.

TimeQuest01 · 20/12/2020 22:56

Those of you that say schools, do you mean primary too?

BonnieDundee · 20/12/2020 22:58

He'll probably get her to announce it in her speech in a lovely surprise worthy of an eastenders episode.

In my head I'm seeing the Queen finishing up her speech and the Eastenders theme tune coming on instead of the National Anthem Grin

PicsInRed · 20/12/2020 22:58

@MyNameForToday1980

We might even get an 'alack' if we're lucky *@StealthPolarBear*
😂😂😂
JamesAnderson · 20/12/2020 22:58

Things are traditionally quiet in January anyway. They may do something so people don't all go to the sales though

Ridiculousradish · 20/12/2020 22:59

Fuck knows. I'm in Cornwall and it just doesn't seem real, it's bizarre. I really feel for the rest of the country. Went to a local village today that has a high number of 2nd homes and holiday cottages. Loads of them were occupied. Locals furious. Local pubs only allowing those from Tier 1 to enter.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 20/12/2020 23:00

@TimeQuest01

Those of you that say schools, do you mean primary too?
Yes. There was a graph posted the other day showing primary cases were really high.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/12/2020 23:01

The previous two have not worked so what exactly will another one achieve?

Nothing whatsoever unless it went on for months, and even then it would just return once we re-opened

Unless the vaccines prove to be a magic bullet of course, but that's an unknown - and if they're not we'll just have to get on with liviing alongside the virus
