Surely we’ll all be in full lockdown very soon?

With the recent travel bans and now freight banned from France, Hancock saying the new variant is ‘out of control’ etc - how long can it be until the whole UK is in lockdown? A few days maybe?

Honestly it’s so bloody exhausting isn’t it?

Schools have to close again surely? V lucky here in that ds primary only had 3 cases and they kept their bubbles to classes. We are in the north east and numbers in my council area are declining but the looming dread of what’s to come is still pretty awful.

I need to go and get some gifts of alcohol and chocolates from the supermarket and it feels me with dread

likeamillpond · 21/12/2020 07:06

I'm tier 2.
I have it on good authority that numbers are rising dramaticallyagaun , especially in the nursing homes. Residents and staff alike.
Imo !they should never have bowed to pressure and moved areas down a tier.

3rd lockdown is definitely on the cards.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/12/2020 07:11

@hettyhooverdoover I cannot work from home, I work in manufacturing but I'm not a key worker so school is not open to my DS. Last time I was furloughed which was OK as work dried up quite a lot but now we are very busy so if I can't go in they will have to get someone else to do my job. Sad

PhilCornwall1 · 21/12/2020 07:15

@Iheartmysmart

I think Boris will make an announcement at 23.59 on Christmas Day that he has a crack team of welders at the ready to seal us all in our homes from midnight. Then he’ll realise that once again he’s talking out of his arse.
He's welcome to weld my front door, it'll melt the fucker!!
SantasBritchesSpelleas · 21/12/2020 07:18

Cases still going down where I am. We are well below the national average but we are still stuck in tier 3. I will be pissed off if we are moved to tier 4. We've been in tier 3 for ages.

Gosh, I would have thought you would have been a key worker being in manufacturing.

Yes i think hell give us christmas day and then simetime in the evening he will be on his podium announcing a lockdown Merry Christmas! Cue Sad Face Alas I now have to tell you You MUST stay home.from tomorrow.

They won't want people piling into the shops on boxing day.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/12/2020 07:23

@hettyhooverdoover no unfortunately, it's furniture manufacturing so classed as non essential, only food and essential goods are considered key workers.

Ok ok, a worry for you. I don't personally think they will close schools but they may have a staggered return.

Billben · 21/12/2020 07:33

@LunaNorth

Maybe he’ll get the Queen to do it, as a festive treat.
👍😂

@covetingthepreciousthings
Why would people from tier 3 travel to tier 2 for shopping trips? Shops are open in tier 3, even hairdressers. Only restaurants, pubs, gyms close in tier 3

Timeturnerplease · 21/12/2020 07:42

It’s going to be very tricky if they close primaries - childcare and financial problems for millions of parents. Home learning has a massive detrimental impact on children in primaries, as really under about age 10 they need a lot of parental support to engage. And I say that as a primary teacher in a wealthy area - no issues of crowding/lack of parental education here and an excellent home learning offer by our school yet still children have come back to school very ‘behind’. I fervently hope that we can at least keep them in under some kind of rota.

I don’t know what the answer is tbh and, crucially, neither do our leaders.

Presumably they are also going to cafes / pubs for substantial meals.. or they are just coming for a nice day out (I live in a pretty tourist place)..

CherryRoulade · 21/12/2020 07:48

I’m pretty sure he’ll do national lockdown from 27th less because of virus and more to hide impact of Brexit.
The damage caused by a late response to the variant is already done. Peak is 4th January and we cannot really do a huge amount about that now.

As ever Johnson tries to look like a hero wading in to sort a crisis when there should never have been a crisis had the government listened to people who knew what they weren’t talking about and had a strategic plan.

I've seen an early rehearsal of the speech already. She's rocking a new designer frock for it.

They come for meals in nice restaurants, a few drinks and also take advantage of the shops. I'm in Liverpool and its been like that for weeks here now. Tier 3 accents everywhere you go. Selfish fuckers.

Fieldofyellowflowers · 21/12/2020 07:53

The rest of the country would probably have a fighting chance if everyone did what they were supposed too and stayed where they were supposed too but that's never gonna happen.

I think the government will fanny about until after xmas and then announce lockdown before new year. 27th or 28th maybe.

Roselilly36 · 21/12/2020 07:55

Very soon I would think, I also think schools may be closed for quite some time, which will add to the misery for many parents trying to juggle everything. We are in flu season, so between now & March I think will be the trickiest time, especially with the added strain of Brexit causing possible disruption to vaccine supply getting into the UK.

PhilCornwall1 · 21/12/2020 07:55

Tier 3 accents everywhere you go.

Eh? So people have specific accents in different tiers now?

Iheartmysmart · 21/12/2020 07:59

Aah but Phil, when has the fact that it’s not actually possible to do something stopped Boris from announcing it anyway?

Tiddlywinkly · 21/12/2020 08:01

I reckon an early evening lockdown announcement on Christmas Day. That's why Tier 1-3 areas are only allowed the 25th to meet family locally. No way do the government want Boxing Day shopping to go ahead on the high streets. As others have said, 2 weeks initially I think.

I feel sick at the prospect of schools closing. I have 2 young primary school children and dh and I work full time (wfh, so 'lucky' on that front). We've had to find the money for a tutor to help with their reading. We tried really hard to keep up with their education too. It was impossible.

XiCi · 21/12/2020 08:02

Erm yes Philcornwall. Its really not hard to spot. Different areas have different accents. Theres always going to be some people that are from one area and live in another but the people I could see, and I've heard alot of other people say the same over the last week or so, were very obviously here for a day out

Tier 3 accents? Fucking hell
SabrinaTheMiddleAgedBitch · 21/12/2020 08:06

Sorry but I am howling at 'tier 3 accents' Grin

Popcornriver · 21/12/2020 08:07

I was really hoping that closed schools and the new higher tiers would help get the numbers down despite the upcoming Christmas mixing for many areas. The explosion of cases yesterday makes it look doubtful though Sad

I think there should be another lockdown for January and for it to make enough impact, schools need to provide remote learning. Even primaries where there's now large amounts of cases. Obviously those like Waxonwaxoff0 should have access to schools for childcare reasons along with keyworkers children. I do think compliance to lockdowns drops massively for many as well when schools are open as usual.
