What does this mean for our food chain?!

Certainly emergency planning teams in the local council were asked by the DfE if they have plans for how to ensure that food shortages caused by BREXIT, don't impact on school lunches in January.

You can imagine how that went down given the huge amount of issues with COVID in schools.

crosstalk · 21/12/2020 12:55

@lakesidexmas Aren't most of the farmed fish in Scotland under Nordic ownership? Just like English fisheries sold their quota to Holland and Spain?

To other PPs - perhaps Lincolnshire farmers et al could do Pick Your Own - especially after their problems getting foreign pickers.

Empressofthemundane · 21/12/2020 13:03

We are an island with a lot of smaller ports being underused or abandoned. Could we not use feeder barges to move containers from Felixstowe and South Hampton to places like Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, New Castle, etc. and get a few lorries off the road? Much greener.

chomalungma · 21/12/2020 13:07

Canals.

That's what we need to use.

AuldAlliance · 21/12/2020 13:17

Donkey carts, too.
Maybe rafts?

Empressofthemundane · 21/12/2020 13:21

Donkey carts and canals are a little outdated. Feeder barges are standard practice in much of the developed world. Why not here? We have a lot of congestion on the motor ways.

countrygirl99 · 21/12/2020 13:31

Presumably it's the evil EU that have persuaded countries like El Salvador and India to ban flights too.

GCAcademic · 21/12/2020 13:38

Of course. Brussels' expansionist regime has taken over the entire world and turned all its countries into a vassal states that it can call upon in order to further subjugate the UK.

SOmuchsparkle · 21/12/2020 15:00

Arrrrgh! BUCK FORRIS!!! 🤬🤬🤬

VulvaPerson · 21/12/2020 15:03

Panicking slightly now as everywhere here is bare, and after talking to friends, local areas are the same Sad

I mean, we can get food so its not a disaster but not being able to do a xmas dinner is making me a little sad. Obviously small first world issue in the grand scheme of things, but annoyed and hope it gets sorted this week! Of course there seems to be plenty of other things, just nothing fresh. So we can get shopping.

Also apologies for posts made late last night by me, I get a little..weird sometimes when on my meds Blush The willy waving post especially. Makes not much sense at all looking back on it. And kind of unsure at the point I thought I was getting at too!

VulvaPerson · 21/12/2020 15:13

A proactive Govt would have already put fast testing in place for lorry drivers crossing into france.

As I understand it, that wouldnt be a failsafe really though. If they picked up the strain when here, they wouldn't test positive for a few days at least? Maybe testing and quarantine folowed by more tests..but thats not too practical really.

VulvaPerson · 21/12/2020 15:18

@justanotherneighinparadise

Perhaps it will transpire that we have an excellent testing facility that has recognised this new strain before anyone else and whilst it is widespread in Europe, we spotted it first! Something to be proud of! 🤭
I think its likely the mutation happened here. However, its likely to be everywhere by nw, if its been about since sepetember. A lot of countries are seeing a steep rise too recently, which would be explained by the new strain, if its more contagious.

Apparently us and Denmark (I think it was) are the best at sequencing or whatever its called, with UK as the best system overall. Not sure if thats true as thats really not my area, but if it is, its something we do right at least!

Empressofthemundane · 21/12/2020 17:06

@VulvaPerson
It’s understandable to be sad about Xmas dinner. I hope you can get the key ingredients in the next few days. 🤞

Carolbetty · 21/12/2020 17:35

negotiation tactic or not, it may actually wake our idiot government up to what we're potentially facing with a no deal Brexit.
The fun never ends.

anon666 · 21/12/2020 17:52

If this was another country being cut off, there would be serious political and economic repercussions. I can't believe they can get away with this in the name of safety. Whose safety? Most of our foreign supply chains currently go through Dover. I'm amazed that we don't have some sort of law in place that prevents this sort of action.

It's reminiscent of the sort of the I'd expect from a totalitarian state like Russia or North Korea, not a civilised Western country.

And yes I hate BREXIT and hate the mess the government have made of it. But it doesn't justify this.

anon666 · 21/12/2020 17:54

Also, let's be realistic about food shortages - it might be that we need to eat different foods, but we're unlikely to starve.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 21/12/2020 18:08

@therubyredshoes. We are not starving in a 3rd world country for goodness sake. A plane drop 😂😂😂😂😂✈️✈️
Ethiopia will be singing for us soon eh ruby!!

timeforanewstart · 21/12/2020 18:09

@vulvaperson have you tried iceland online here we can get next day normally quite easy , they may have some bits in
Our iceland in range had some turkey crowns in just yesterday ?

timeforanewstart · 21/12/2020 18:10

@anon666 exactly and if people don't go and stockpile that would help

timeforanewstart · 21/12/2020 18:15

@justanotherneighenpartner
Apparently we do have one of the best at this along with denmark
Still a lot to learn but be surprised if not elsewhere already

Parker231 · 21/12/2020 18:22

Well we’re having a good practice run of supply chain issues we’ll be facing with Brexit. Although post Brexit it will be permanent problems rather than this Covid temporary issue.

Feel very sorry for anyone working in manufacturing supply chain.

timeforanewstart · 21/12/2020 18:25

@Parker231 why will it ? We have freight in from all around the world daily ? Might be a few teething issues but no reason why it should be long term

WrongKindOfFace · 21/12/2020 18:28

@Carolbetty

negotiation tactic or not, it may actually wake our idiot government up to what we're potentially facing with a no deal Brexit. The fun never ends.
It won’t. They were bloody sniggering about it during the briefing.
SOmuchsparkle · 21/12/2020 18:38

Fucking nightmare!

If freight isn't allowed in from France
Parker231 · 21/12/2020 18:38

Time - additional documentation, licensing and checks for hauliers. There aren’t enough new licenses so huge numbers of hauliers won’t be able to travel to the EU. The technology hasn’t been developed for the new custom checks and the staff haven’t been recruited and trained. The slightest of delays for car parts, as an example getting through the ports and on to the car plants will mean the production line comes to a halt very quickly due to JIT processes.
