The cynic in me says it's an opportunity for a negotiation tactic over Brexit. The French give the British public a taste of what No Deal will be like and a weak and panicked government thrash out a deal before the end of next week.

Same

PicsInRed · 20/12/2020 21:55

Road freight from the UK into France is prohibited due to the person accompanying it. It seems that the issue for the UK is that EU truckies could technically drive freight to the UK, but then would not be allowed back again and therefore road freight into the UK is effectively also prohibited. Therefore, no freight will enter the UK by road for 48 hours.

What strain does Macron have?

@TheRubyRedshoes

User, same, but if that's true then I'm sure he could be hauled up to crime against humanity court! (macron).

So I doubt it.

Yes, but it's politics. This 'new strain' is the perfect cover.
Regulus · 20/12/2020 21:56

Agree it's a taste of no deal brexit. But if people really think it's nothing to worry about then they are delusional.

Yup. Especially as Germanys numbers seem broadly similar to our own, I don't see anyone cutting them off

Quite possibly.

I think we should simply take it as a salient lesson to never again be in any way reliant on the French for anything transit of essential supplies.

France is trying to protect its peoples, thats all.

If they didn't and this strain became endemic, what would Macron say to his public?

He's just protecting the French people from our super-Covid. He's not banning food being transported to us, although in effect it does the same thing, and it's for 48 hours while an EU wide position is agreed. So no, it's perfectly justifiable for Macron. And yes, helpful to let us have a 'try before you buy' go at no deal.
Requinblanc · 20/12/2020 21:58

This really is getting out of control. Everyone will be panic-buying tomorrow.

This government is criminally incompetent. All of this should have been discussed already (keeping the supply chain going and joint measures) with other countries the minute the new strain was found and before anything was made public.

Johnson must be removed from office before he destroy the country...

Sillysop92 · 20/12/2020 21:59

Thank god there’s a couple of cases of Cliquot in the cellar 😂🍾

How do you know it hasn't?

He's hardly going to be discussing every detail of every possibility with us.

This is a fast moving situation. No one can be expected to know what's going to happen next.

I too feel quite worried by it too. This along with the initial / teething problems of brexit with the flow of goods in and out I feel this is really going to cause problems.
I know they said 48hrs, but I think that’s just to give them a chance to look at the data etc ... - I think it will go on for longer.

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 20/12/2020 22:01

@TheRubyRedshoes

Boris has looked at really well worried in past days, very deeply in thought and he's usually quite chipper.

We have however very many more means to get through this. We are a spoilt western nation, many more countries in the third world deal with awful things every day.

We will survive and get through...

He looks like he has aged about 100 years recently.
Thewinterofdiscontent · 20/12/2020 22:02

Stuff will have been paid for. It’s money not shortages.

Perfect28 · 20/12/2020 22:03

This is extremely worrying. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive.

What do you think it means?

What do you think the government think it means???

Is that the sound of many pennies dropping? Nope thats a bit optimistic...

ListeningQuietly · 20/12/2020 22:04

The UK voted repeatedly to be a Sovereign Island Nation
free of the shackles of Europe

52% of the population should be delighted
that COVID has brought it forwards by ten days

Dawnlassie · 20/12/2020 22:05

France is trying to protect its peoples, thats all.
If they didn't and this strain became endemic, what would Macron say to his public?

And yet when it all first started they allowed flights in from China.

This is about pressuring the UK into conceding to accept a deal that is worse for us and better for the EU.

If you think otherwise you are extremely naive.

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2020 22:05

@ragged

Where did you read that?
Hello. Wakey Wakey!
Birdladybird · 20/12/2020 22:06

French priminister has said this today. Given the bit about testing for french nationals to come back into France after the 48 hours, I assume it will be longer for non french citizens.

Announcement and for your information from Castex In English:

In view of the new health risk, and pending its assessment, all flow of people from the United Kingdom to France is suspended from midnight this evening for 48 hours, and for all means of transport.

We invite all French nationals to carry out a PCR test that may be required for any entry into France from the United Kingdom after the 48-hour precautionary period.

This 2-day period will allow :
➖ to ensure coordination with our European partners in order to reach a common answer.
➖ to provide clarity on the health situation across the Channel
➖ to work on an adapted solution for our nationals present in the United Kingdom.

SirGawain · 20/12/2020 22:06

@Mamamia456

It's only France that have said that for 48 hours. We will still have freight coming from other countries so no need to worry.
Most Road freight come via France.

Thank goodness we did a bulk buy of French Letters just last week. Wink
