@BlackForestCake

If only someone had warned us four years ago that our food supply chain depends on fast and unbureaucratic movement of goods across the Channel! WHY DID NOBODY TELL US???

Yes, of course we will be beggars. The U K cannot survive without the EU, we'll lose all the money that the EU very generously donate to us. We have no industry to support ourselves. We might struggle with manufacturing for a while.....where did that go? We don't have any farmland or agriculture to feed our nation, no cattle, no sheep, no pigs, no chicken. I'm really not certain that the U.K. can survive without the magnificent benevolence of the EU.

FFS it's nothing to do with the "magnificent benevolence of the EU". It's to do with the fact we currently have access to the world's biggest trading bloc and we're about to wander into 2021 with no alternative arrangements, and no new trade deals with any other country. It's to do with the fact that our entire import/export model is based on being part of that trading bloc we're sticking two fingers up at and therefore yes, while we have all of those things you mention, there's a fuck ton of stuff we don't have which we would have to bring in at huge cost compared to now. All that's before we even go into what we export and whether EU countries will still want it quite as much when massive tariffs start applying.

Sounds to me like macron/Eu pulling a stunt under the cover of covid because they are shitting themselves at a prospect of no deal.

:) :) :)

Oh wait were you actually being serious???

AmberAndAlexsMum · 21/12/2020 01:12

I live in Kent on the coast, and see the huge container ships coming up the channel all the time. Also there are other ports, like Felixstowe, where goods come in. Don't worry too much. Europe needs our money still. We buy a lot from them.

Probably, but either way, the supermarkets will be stripped clean tomorrow, and this is going to be bad.
TiddyTid · 21/12/2020 01:15

Yup. Why still in talks with us and hanging on to get a deal. I'll put money on Boris not being bothered

VulvaPerson · 21/12/2020 01:19

Have to say, am probably the least likely to cheer for Brexit shite (very pro remain) but the Dover thing does come across a bit as willy waving..possibly over the fish thing that they are currently arguing about.

Probably isn't, but I can see how some think that.

Thismustbelove · 21/12/2020 01:42

Why still in talks with us and hanging on to get a deal.

If you go by that logic, they would have already done a deal?

They are still ‘in talks’ because they granted the extension and are bound to negotiate until 11pm on 31st Dec.

IMO the UK has lost the goodwill of Europe and they will not grant a favourable deal, if any, to the UK.

notimagain · 21/12/2020 02:08

I'm not sure what the "Dover thing" is TBH, for example all air travel between the UK and France has stopped..is that a "Heathrow thing"...it sure as heck isn't about fish....

I know it's a PITA for those caught up in this but if the PM and the Health Secretary go on TV and emphasise how bad things have become how do do you/we expect the neighbours to react?

Turtleshelly · 21/12/2020 02:16

@Mamamia456

It's only France that have said that for 48 hours. We will still have freight coming from other countries so no need to worry.
Hate to break it to you but a lot of food from other countries comes that way too. It’s our main port. If trucks can’t get out they won’t want to come in either. Their is the option of other ports and a lot of these are already being utilised due to the threat of no deal so hopefully some food can get in that way but the main routes are blocked. Look into our just in time supply system to understand the ramifications of that. And trucks were already at a five mile standstill in Dover with many importers refusing to arrive to Brexit stockpiling by firms anyway. It’s really not as easy as you make it sound.

Exactly.
GerardWay123 · 21/12/2020 03:21

Yes, the container ships are coming in but they can't port and unload as normal. The ports are now doing 6 hours deep cleaning everyday. It's a massive backlog.

This.
People in the UK seem to be completely malware of what desperate straits Macron is in! His fishermen will gut him if they don’t keep the fishing rights /this is purely political posturing. This mutant ‘English’ strain is a godsend to them and the UK gvt gave handed them a PR oppo on a plate! Of course the strain is in Europe too and probably arrived through Kent!

BeakyWinder · 21/12/2020 06:59

DP has just set off to do a food shop (NOT panic buy, I actually posted yesterday that I left the shops with no food twice this week due to the short dated food, so we need some basics) for Xmas day and other people will clear the shelves no doubt.

Originalyellowbelly · 21/12/2020 07:17

I'm due an online supermarket delivery tomorrow, I'm not going to get it am i?

SansaSnark · 21/12/2020 07:32

We are dependent on imports for nearly 50% of our food in the UK. That's not all from the EU but most food from the rest of the world comes via EU ports.

To say we can just scale up our own production is ridiculous - that would have been the work of years and required our government to really invest. Of course they haven't done this, so yes it is a major problem.

Also to combat the misinformation about the new strain - the cases detected in Europe number in the 20s. In the UK it's 100s if not 1000s. And this new strain (there are lots) was first described in December.
