@crackofdoom

*On a related note, what happens to the poor lorry drivers stuck in Kent? In tier 4. I'm just imagining them all parked up and hungry and not able to go home*

Bored, frustrated and pissed off I should think, although they've probably managed to forage some food from somewhere by now. I don't think being in Tier 4 would stop them from leaving Kent, as they must count as being on an essential journey, but most of them are trying to get to France, so that doesn't bode well for them.

Loads of them are small independents, with their own lorries Sad

I was more worried about them getting food, in tier 4. Are service stations exempt from the closing of restaurants etc? Hadn't actually thought about that before.

Caught in a catch 22 of knowing that panic buying definitely makes the situation worse but genuinely afraid of not having any fresh food (namely vegetables). Shops open at 00.01, am I the only person thinking of going? They will be mayhem tomorrow morning. Trying to think rationally but...

I think Princess Anne maybe?

The only benefit I can see is I was trying to will myself into getting back to fasting regularly again. I’ve got a good 28lb of fat on me I could happily live off for a while.

justgeton · 20/12/2020 23:16

Could you all stop please and think about my sofa.

Ordered this week. From Italy.

I'll need garden furniture before that arrives won't I 😟

DO NOT GO TO KENT

ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A LORRY DRIVER.

Who said this?

I'll give you a little clue:

Nick Eardley @nickeardleybbc
NEW: Govt urging everybody - including hauliers - to avoid Kent ports until further notice

“We are expecting significant disruption"

Chloemol · 20/12/2020 23:16

Stop the scaremongering please bits 48 hours and freight to France, stuff can still come in ( if drivers are prepared to drive it)

Whilst Dover is the largest port there are others, freight can be diverted via Holland and Harwich, or Scottish ports if required and then driven to where it needs to be

Or shock, horror, perhaps some of the food and goods we export could in fact stay here and we use it!

DrizzleandDamp · 20/12/2020 23:17
  • Didn't you realise the the U.K. was leaving the EU? I expect many farmers did realise that this would happen. Farmers may have realised that Brexit would happen, they may have planned ahead. There will be fresh vegetables, possibly not the exotic veg that you are used to. The vegetables that are flown in from countries way South of the EU*

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA no comment. Companies have, but they are handcuffed by the total lack of even basic paperwork available from the government with weeks to go! Google any food based trade bodies open letter to the government and weep.

Yes you need garden furniture.

You’re not the only one - I read part of this thread to DH and we freaked ourselves out to the extent that he got willingly out of bed and set off for Tesco. He can’t buy booze (which is crucial!) but he can get everything else.

Are we self sufficient in food and everything we need to produce food?

DrizzleandDamp · 20/12/2020 23:18

PLEASE don’t panic buy, it’s selfish and really really screws everything up.

48 hours or until the French farmers riot.

I wonder if Boris has resorted to sleeping pills yet to get a brief bit of respite from his self made nightmare.

Goods can come in by ship. Sailors stay on board. Like during the black plague. I don't know if it's true, but I heard the phrase Dutch courage comes from that - they were brave enough to bring ships up the Thames during the Plague and had plenty of beer on board.

They have a big market in the EU though to sell and trade with.
Plussizejumpsuit · 20/12/2020 23:20

This is the fucking 3rd thread about our food supply in the top 10 or do. Why are people scaremongering? Absolutely disgusting.

cdtaylornats · 20/12/2020 23:21

Presumably any freight from France to Ireland via the UK ports/tunnel is also blocked?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 20/12/2020 23:21

@DrizzleandDamp

It’s not panic buying, it’s doing the Christmas shop 12 hours earlier than we would otherwise have done. There’s not much food in the house as we were gearing up for the big shop tomorrow.
DrizzleandDamp · 20/12/2020 23:21

Are we self sufficient in food and everything we need to produce food? No we are at 40% self sufficiency and that’s with access to the equipment, seeds, medicines and everything we need to actually grow and read food.

That being said we oversupply on some things and export.

You’ll be eating and lot of potatoes, pork and lamb. Drinking milk. Missing other meats, veg and cheese.

Forget a lot of processed food it’s mostly imported.

snowballer · 20/12/2020 23:22

*As a non-Brit in an EU country, I really hope that doesn’t happen.

Every EU country is at crisis due to Covid. Having to tie-up even more of our resources on Brexit would be insane.

Seeing so many on Twitter tonight saying that Brexit should be delayed due to Covid, but I genuinely think the fight against Covid will be delayed if Brexit is still taking up so much time and effort from other countries.

The UK needs to handle its own mess.*

Thanks for your input, but you might imagine how the millions of Brits who never wanted this fucking shambolic mess of a government to be in charge of putting into action a catastrophe they didn't vote for just might not want to be living on a tiny island isolated from the rest of the world at this very moment.
