Feel really bad for Cornwall

They've done so well to keep their numbers down and have done whatever has been asked of them, yet the Christmas plans are now being restricted.

I've got family down there and they've said everyone there is livid and are afraid of Londoners turning up and spreading the mutated strain around the county.

They've not "done well", that suggests their low rates are due to people's behaviour, whereas it's population density and geography. Crap for them, but it's crap for everyone.

Frazzled2207 · 19/12/2020 21:23

Eh? They can meet in groups of 6 anytime can’t they?

WalkingOnStarshine · 19/12/2020 21:26

Our christmas plans aren't being restricted. Compared with the rest of the country, tier 1 with the rule of 6 is a pretty decent deal.

I imagine if anyone from tier 4 does ignore the rules and head down, it won't be the influx we usually get. Also it was packed out with tourists all summer and we seemed to manage, hopefully we get on okay.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 19/12/2020 21:28

How bloody ridiculous.

How about instead of meeting their family on the 25th December, they meet on the 24th or 26th instead? What an absolute hardship for them.

LubaLuca · 19/12/2020 21:31

People living in Cornwall haven't deserved a good Christmas any more than anyone in the country. They're lucky that they're in a sparsely populated cul-de-sac, that's all.

BackwardsGoing · 19/12/2020 21:32

My town in Cornwall was pretty busy today. Judging by the car registrations and accents there are a lot of tourists in the shops, cafes etc.

tootyfruitypickle · 19/12/2020 21:37

Think all parts of the country behave the same. It’s just busier in London. It’s like blaming a cancer patient for being ill. It’s luck. And yes all parts of the country will get this strain just like they all got the original strain. It’s just the way it is.

This is the concern.

It’s just bad luck that some of us are having a particularly crappy time at this time of the year !!

sherrystrull · 19/12/2020 21:39

I think they've benefited from being more spread out which has helped their rates. I fail to believe there's anywhere in the country where people are following the rules any more than anywhere else. I think it's just luck and concentration of population.

middleager · 19/12/2020 21:46

Is this a deliberately goady post?

IndecentFeminist · 19/12/2020 21:48

Everywhere has been trying to reduce their numbers. Cornwall are no more virtuous or deserving than anywhere else. They're the closest 'attached' thing to an Island we've got.

There's a lot of it about this evening.
IndecentFeminist · 19/12/2020 21:49

And I say that as an Isle of Wight resident dreading the usual holiday influx.

Napqueen1234 · 19/12/2020 21:49

Are you joking? The Cornish have the most freedom of any of us. I feel sorry for them because we have all been affected by covid but they’re certainly not the ones to pity given the news today.

Can't really say that's because of tourists though. I've lived in Cornwall for 3 years. Way before the pandemic started and have a thick northern accent! Don't automatically assume that people without a local accent are not residents of Cornwall
IndecentFeminist · 19/12/2020 21:51

And you can't tell a thing from car registration plates

I'd assume this is a pretty big factor. Nicely put!

Don't particularly care if they do rock up down here and the Christmas plans stay as is for us.
Lozza70 · 19/12/2020 21:58

Jesus wept! Like we want to drive for hours across the country so we can go to a pub when we cannot see our own family..... Are you trying to just piss people off when we have had a shit day already??

Daisychainsandglitter · 19/12/2020 22:05

I don't feel sorry for Cornwall at all. They've had more freedom than the rest of us. I live somewhere that has had various forms of local lockdowns/tiers since the summer and I'm absolutely sick of it.
Cornwall has not done well at all it is due to its population density that rates are low.

Grin

It’s probably because every other house is a second home and mostly empty that’s helped.

In terms of “ done well” I think Portsmouth did well to only go into a higher tier now. It’s the most densely populated U.K. city outside of London. High level poverty and very low levels of health. They must of taken it seriously to only be on the radar now.

No, i'm speaking as someone who has elderly relatives down there I haven't seen for ages, who are fearful of the south east tsunami heading their way.

Nobody has "done so well", its because there are hardly any people in Cornwall, no big cities and only one hospital.

People in all areas of the country have done "what was asked of them". A lot of people in tier 3 and 4, for example, do they not deserve Christmas just because of an unlucky post code?

User158340 · 19/12/2020 22:10

Portsmouth is quite landlocked and almost an island in itself.
