So,it's just a variant, nothing to see here, blah blah blah..... I'm pretty sanguine about this stuff but dropping this late at night as a headline right now..... I'm getting mightily pissed off with the uncertainty and the subtle fear mongering......

Any thoughts?

@NeurotreeWenceslas

There's no evidence yet that this is a virus that creates a lesser reaction. That part hasn't changed according to the info on links in this thread. (We don't know that yet.)

It seems to be better at getting into cells.

Which may mean it both infects more people as well as trigger milder reactions in them than others so far as their immune system is stronger/ different.

Eg in the case of children; more children catch it and then have mild reactions that we might not have otherwise seen. Because they a) wouldn't have caught the original strains or b) don't have as bad a reaction as adults.

It potentially makes no difference to it's virulence in the rest of the population.

If this is the case it’ll be interesting to see what happens with schools. Keep them as they are because the children usually aren’t badly affected (and stuff the household/community spread via parents and teachers etc), tighten up school measures or online school for who knows how long to keep the stats down.
Still a theory and there could still be other factors at play:

www.tes.com/news/new-covid-variant-may-infect-pupils-more-effectively
That’s not a theory and a bit of a silly article. The data speaks for itself, the most impacted group is school age kids, so clearly it impacts them more than the previous variant...

NeurotreeWenceslas · 21/12/2020 13:34

But there could be other factors that have caused the spike in primary children.

As a teacher, I can think of a few.

Boris to hold emergency press conference today

RedToothBrush · 21/12/2020 13:43
@RedToothBrush I am in Trafford and have been tracking the recent rise too. I had wondered if if was lateral flow testing of students being misallocated again but numbers of LFTs not showing that. Proximity to Wales makes some sense, but also there are many people in Trafford and Cheshire who do a lot of travelling / commuting to London (I myself used to go weekly) even throughout the lockdown (apparently lawyers, accountants, consultants and bankers are exempt from the “wfh if you can” message Hmm - would not be at all surprised if that has caused some spread.
Well yes. London workers living in Cheshire East, Warrington and Trafford are definitely also something in my consciousness too.

But the very same people are the ones popping over to North Wales too.

Its in that demographic that essentially were the ones to bring it back from ski resorts and are more likely to have a uni student in the household.

I'm watching whats happening in Hale Barns again with interest.

They went from less that 3 cases at the beginning of the month to now seeing another massive outbreak.

It's an area that did particularly well during the November lockdown for reducing numbers and is now seeing them skyrocket again. And you cant put that down to bars or restaurants cos its T3 (unless people are skipping over the border) and its typically an area of very high level of homeworking.

So what is going on? Is it high levels of illegal socialising or people more in contact with high incident areas through work? Or going for day trips to NW when they shouldn’t be?

In terms of behaviour and movement it is utterly fascinating.

PurpleDaisies · 21/12/2020 13:43

That could be because of the lack of social distancing in schools rather than anything intrinsically due to the virus.

Boris to hold emergency press conference today
Here we go

Boris to hold emergency press conference today
Another one?!
PurpleDaisies · 21/12/2020 13:46

Why is this one an “emergency” press conference? We get them all the time.

tootyfruitypickle · 21/12/2020 13:50

Oh FFS!

tootyfruitypickle · 21/12/2020 13:53

Presuming a national lockdown ? Which makes us in the south east look fortunate that at least we got a few more days of cancelled christmases!!

tootyfruitypickle · 21/12/2020 13:53

*notice

NeurotreeWenceslas · 21/12/2020 13:54

We've had a lot of rain, v cold days. I've found myself in stuffy rooms more often; bbc ran a thing a few weeks ago saying that we should note how stuffy a room is. There has been a lot of singing (not that that makes any difference in an sen school.)

Of course, mutation plus the above could equal a spike in cases

Frazzled2207 · 21/12/2020 13:54

This is where the new strain has been detected

New strain stuff.....

There has been no suggestion of this.

It will be a standard update on what is going on with the borders and anything new relating to the vaccine/new strain.

Chaotic45 · 21/12/2020 13:55

I'd imagine he's going to tell everyone not to panic shop.

Currently isolating until Boxing Day so I'm hoping there will be some food and loo roll left for me when I can get to a shop.

justanotherneighinparadise · 21/12/2020 13:56

Who is reporting a press conference?

itsgettingweird · 21/12/2020 13:56

@SexTrainGlue

Natural selection is known to make viruses less severe in symptoms (at least initially) because people who are generally well but a little under the weather will carry on their day to day activities

This doesn't apply to viruses which spread before the onset of symptoms.

That complicates things.

But make sense.

PurpleDaisies · 21/12/2020 13:57

@justanotherneighinparadise

Who is reporting a press conference?
It’s being widely reported. The bbc for example.
AuntieStella · 21/12/2020 13:58

@justanotherneighinparadise

Who is reporting a press conference?
BBC, SKY, just about everyone.

They've not said what time, but it's after COBRA (starts 14:00) and expected to talk about travel, freight etc, but will prob range a bit more widely than that

tootyfruitypickle · 21/12/2020 13:58

Yes sorry my brain melted for a minute there . Sounds like to do with borders. Are people panic buying? Feels like normal Xmas shop here. Doing a presser telling people not to panic buy seems a bad idea IMO....

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 21/12/2020 14:01

Because he only speaks in emergencies?

RedToothBrush · 21/12/2020 14:02

@Frazzled2207

So that pretty much confirms what I thought. The Wrexham hotspot is the new strain and there is a hotspot just over the border from it in England. And that hotspot nearby looks a lot like Trafford/Warrington area...

Joy.

ceeveebee · 21/12/2020 14:03

@RedToothBrush I see very high levels of compliance in shops - many people even wearing masks in the streets - and we have only had 2 cases in school all term (which happened to be in the last week and in both my DCs classes so we are self isolating until Boxing Day!). But I see large groups of teenagers out and about and in cars together, I know of lots of examples of mixing within households, including dinner parties, bridge clubs etc, and many people who go “over the border” to Cheshire to eat out. I have turned down several invitations in the last fortnight. Also, when told that the kids had to self isolate the first reaction on the class whatsapp group was “but I don’t think we need to as my child doesn’t sit near them” and “why do we have to stay in for 10 days when it’s only 7 in France”

Hale Barns has a large Jewish community so I do wonder whether Hannukah has played a part. The rise seems to be particularly steep in over 75s so there may have been a care home outbreak too
