I know you had good intent @TheSunIsStillShining, sorry for getting a bit nationalistic in defence. If you want to criticise the UK not putting in better permanent facilities for lorry drivers in Kent for the occasional (every few months on average for my entire life) French crossing issues, have at it and I'll just nod furiously.

Oh, don't get me started on that! It's a disgrace how on a human level this gov can't get it's head out of it's arse!!! I find it infuriating that they are incompetent assholes who are trying to blame everyone else for their stupidity and people are actually nodding to it and making excuses for them.... It feels like we are living in a Monty Python sketch :(
TheSunIsStillShining · 23/12/2020 14:30

Btw, just thinking out loud....
It's actually good to be called out and I don't mind rephrasing or apologizing publicly.
I do find that since we have been home since Feb (sooner than it was designated a pandemic), no holidays, no irl friends (just over phone from ohme country), no meaningful interactions on a daily basis (aka work) my thinking has tended to become a bit one sided and I am trying actively to counterbalance outside influences (listed above) and stay on my "normal" critical thinking path. Sometimes I lose the way and being called out reminds me to get back on track.

boys3 · 23/12/2020 14:34

Press conference this afternoon the graun are reporting. 15:00 start.

MRex · 23/12/2020 14:35

It is hard not meeting people as normal with the whole wide range of topics and thoughts that brings. I'd offer to meet you for a beer as you're so close, but... well, you know. Tier 4 etc.

Wakeupin2022 · 23/12/2020 14:36

The Govt should have had toilets at Calais.

But the whole responsibility does not lie with the UK Govt (Brexit on the other hand........)

What should the UK govt have done? Keep quiet about this new strain? Not inform the WHO and leave everyone in the dark because they can't be arsed doing genomic sequencing?

Wakeupin2022 · 23/12/2020 14:37

Toilets at Dover Blush

MRex · 23/12/2020 14:39

Hmmm. 3pm eh? What do we think it is, anyone in Sussex who doesn't have an individual turkey yet is to go and buy one? Or announcing that we will still receive EU cauliflower in January?

MRex · 23/12/2020 14:43

@Wakeupin2022 - I've no issue at all with the UK announcing details about the strain, nor even the EU doing a panicky border close. It's just that between weather, French strikes, Calais issues and a thousand other things it feels like there are always lorry drivers getting stuck in Kent. My best friend from school's dad was a lorry driver and described some real horrors, decades ago. It clearly needs range of permanent toilet and food/drink outlets set out in the area with a couple kept open year round and a plan to shuttle in staff plus food the moment the next incident arises.

ceeveebee · 23/12/2020 14:47

I don’t think they will put anyone in tier 4 until Boxing Day. And then I think it will be east and West Sussex, the rest of Surrey and Essex that isn’t already. Possibly also Cumbria. Possibly also Lancashire

I wonder whether they will also put Liverpool, Cheshire East and West into tier 3

ceeveebee · 23/12/2020 14:48

Although tier 3 probably fairly pointless at this stage

Eyewhisker · 23/12/2020 15:23

Let’s see. What have the rest of Europe contributed?

How about the BioNtech vaccine which was developed in Germany by German scientists and is made in Belgium. Pfizer are running the trials, but the actual vaccine development is German.

And breathe.....

sashagabadon · 23/12/2020 15:30

@MRex

I think honestly it's a bit rough to say "What I'd like to see is UK being proactive and driving the process forward instead of just waiting..." when the UK scientists have one of the first vaccine candidates that's ready and works (Oxford), does more genome testing than any other country, is leading the charge on making mRNA vaccines robust enough for widespread use (Imperial), identifying dexamethasone as critical in treatment, and is kindly offering the initial Oxford vaccine at cost for developing countries. I won't pick out just your country in comparison, how about you tell me what exactly has been contributed by the entirety of the rest of Europe apart from the trials of lateral flow tests in Italy? A fat load of "just waiting" is what it looks like to me.
Exactly. I think the U.K. overall has contributed hugely to the fight against Covid. Germany too of course but there are plenty of countries that have actually done very little for except close their borders.
ceeveebee · 23/12/2020 15:34

So - only Isles of Scilly left in tier 1

Surprised that they haven’t moved Liverpool and Cumbria to tier 3 given the recent rises and the fact there is apparently an outbreak of the new strain in Cumbria.

Well they do have to follow the science... by at least a week if not several months.

Wakeupin2022 · 23/12/2020 15:43

We are still Tier 2 and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

QueenStromba · 23/12/2020 15:44

Do you feel like you needed to go up a tier or two?

TheSunIsStillShining · 23/12/2020 15:44

:) Let's put that on the shelf for now, but I might take you up on it when it's realistically possible. The civilized discussion here is actually a real help in the world of online nonsense!
Wakeupin2022 · 23/12/2020 15:47

@QueenStromba

Do you feel like you needed to go up a tier or two?
No our numbers are relatively low apart from North of county.

But we are almost surrounded by Tier 3 although not Tier 4.

We already have people heading here and sure it will only get worse.

ceeveebee · 23/12/2020 15:48

Chart for Eden in Cumbria where there has been an outbreak of new variant detected, rates have gone up by 5 x since start of December but left in tier 2....

Wakeupin2022 · 23/12/2020 15:51

Peston had mentioned Tier 4 for Cumbria.

My opinion & I may be completely wrong.

Hes giving the 'North' a Christmas and then once that's over with he will move more into Tier 4.

Madness of course but then thats the Govt.

Quarantino · 23/12/2020 15:59

The press conference had slides comparing rates of the 'old' and 'new' variants in various areas - have they produced these before?

QueenStromba · 23/12/2020 16:11

Well now they've just graduated to telling outright lies at these press conferences. Primary school students don't have a much lower rate of infection than secondary school students (20% lower isn't much of a difference at all and could be explained by it being harder to swab small children).

DecemberStar · 23/12/2020 16:11

No

Goldistheanswer · 23/12/2020 16:11

Today’s figures: 39,237 new cases and 744 deaths
