How much school have your kids missed due to COVID this term?

Either being ill, schools having to shut or isolating as a contact?

I think we've been quite lucky. Both kids missed 2 days before half term as I was waiting for a test result (negative luckily), DD (in Y8) recently had a contact and was off for a bit but luckily the contact happened just before two days of planned school closure (nothing to do with COVID) so she only missed 7 days of school.

I have friends whose kids have been in and out loads and missed more school than they've had.

DD's secondary is small and split over two sites, so it was doing OK, but things really ramped up suddenly after half term and they had to move around curriculum because of teachers being off.

DS's primary seems to have not been affected much - a few kids being off waiting for test results (all negative).

I never believed in Sept that schools would make it to half term let alone Christmas without all shutting. I have kept back some days of holiday I can carry over as I fully expect some kind of shutdown or extended holiday Jan/Feb.

Primary in tier 2 area - my children haven’t missed a day. I was fairly sure school would be shut after October half term at the very latest so am considering the last few weeks a bonus. It’ll no doubt catch up with us at some point...

Lucky here, but by the skin of our teeth.. One dd had to isolate for 2 weeks the other nothing yet but... Nealry every day we have had letters this week about cases and some year groups are out.

None.

Vargas · 16/12/2020 22:31

All at secondary, London

Dd - none
Ds2 - none
Ds1 - 2 weeks, plus finished 2 days early

Much better than I'd feared at beginning of term.

10yo class isolated for 2 weeks in first week of sept. Also had a few days off when DH had symptoms and we isolated waiting for test result. 12yo the same, and I know lots of his subject teachers have been off, but school doesn't keep us informed about that. I only know what my child has told me, like when I looked in his English book and found no work for weeks. He'd had cover/supply.

Ozzie9523 · 16/12/2020 22:33

Year 12, missed 6 weeks so far 😬

lunar1 · 16/12/2020 22:35

2 days waiting for test results.

AliMonkey · 16/12/2020 22:36

None, both secondary. One had to SI over the whole of half-term but didn't miss any school. Other not had to at all - but had about a month when in many of his classes there was only about half the class in so I was just waiting for the call, but it never came. One day of school left to make it to the end of term!

MadameBlobby · 16/12/2020 22:37

None due to Covid. Massive high school x 2 kids.

However

Both kept off due to a cold at start of term and eldest for same reason today. I don’t think it’s fair to risk spreading anything, not just Covid, to other people now.

Eldest also kept off as he got into a panic one day about whether he could have asymptomatically spread it so I just kept him off for his mental well-being , he was in a real state.

2 weeks online learning (SI, close contact classmate).

Back for just over a week and home again (online learning until the end of term, not SI herself, but whole year group sent home as so many were SI that learning was better delivered online

The school (secondary) has done really well about the switch to online. I expect it's rather different for younger pupils where a lecture/independent learning approach just wouldn't work

DS year 6
DD year 8
Both DH & I are teachers
I'm very grateful that we've all completed a full term.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/12/2020 22:49

None. Feeling very lucky. DS at primary school, 2 year groups have had to isolate but not his.

BrieAndChilli · 16/12/2020 22:54

My 3 - 2 in secondary and 2 in primary - had 3 days off while we were waiting for DDs test results to come back as she had a cough.
DS1 year has to self isolate but 1 week was over half term and the other was during our firebreak in wales so his year were home learning anyway so they still attended lessons just virtually.

HairyToity · 16/12/2020 22:54

DD 2 days. DS 4 days.

Tootsietootie · 16/12/2020 22:56

Ds1- 5 weeks
Ds2- 4 weeks
DD - 5 weeks

Tootsietootie · 16/12/2020 22:56

Not at the same time either 🤪

Mumof3andlovingit · 16/12/2020 22:56

6 weeks altogether unfortunately. Tier 3 area.

Covidasaurus · 16/12/2020 22:57

4 weeks and I suspect it will shortly be 6. Aged 15 and an unlucky year. Miserable.

MrsGradyOldLady · 16/12/2020 22:58

5 days after half term when I tested positive. There's been loads of positive cases around us so amazed really she's only had to miss those days.
