How much school have your kids missed due to COVID this term?

Either being ill, schools having to shut or isolating as a contact?

I think we've been quite lucky. Both kids missed 2 days before half term as I was waiting for a test result (negative luckily), DD (in Y8) recently had a contact and was off for a bit but luckily the contact happened just before two days of planned school closure (nothing to do with COVID) so she only missed 7 days of school.

I have friends whose kids have been in and out loads and missed more school than they've had.

DD's secondary is small and split over two sites, so it was doing OK, but things really ramped up suddenly after half term and they had to move around curriculum because of teachers being off.

DS's primary seems to have not been affected much - a few kids being off waiting for test results (all negative).

I never believed in Sept that schools would make it to half term let alone Christmas without all shutting. I have kept back some days of holiday I can carry over as I fully expect some kind of shutdown or extended holiday Jan/Feb.

None. We’ve obviously been very lucky dispite being in a hotspot. No cases at all in our school Shock

BrandyandDeath · 17/12/2020 07:11

3 days' compulsory isolation before one had minor surgery. Other than that, not a day missed. Brilliant state primary school on an estate, run by sensible staff determined to educate these children.

Looneytune253 · 17/12/2020 07:11

Eldest (y11) missed 8 days with isolation from a case at school then 1 day awaiting test when she had a cough. Youngest missed 1 day when eldest had a cough. That's it thankfully cos I'm self employed

FippertyGibbett · 17/12/2020 07:12

One day.

ChairinSage · 17/12/2020 07:14

DD is yr12. She's current her third period of isolation this term. How on earth she is meant to do A levels like this is beyond me - two are science subjects, so she's missed loads of practical work.

Camomila · 17/12/2020 07:14

5 days, reception - ok really.
3 days - DS1 had a temperature, had to wait for test results.
2 days - the baby had a temperature/cough, had to wait for test results.

We've been lucky, in 3 'goes' of family members getting tested we've never waited more than 48h for results, mostly came back the next day.

Callcat · 17/12/2020 07:17

5 weeks. My friend's DS in the next county over has only been in 13 days since September Shock

IRememberMySpaceBabe · 17/12/2020 07:18

DS at school had 1 day off to get tested (we all had colds but he had a cough too) - his negative result came in at 10.30 pm so he was able to return to school the next day. DD at nursery obviously had the day off as well to isolate, she also returned the next day.

There’s been no positive cases all term in their school/nursery.

beenrumbled · 17/12/2020 07:18

DS2 1 2 week isolation due to close contact at school testing positive. He reports regularly only having half the number of pupils in his class he should due to isolations/cases (YR10)

DD none at her college though the other half of her classes have had to isolate a few times - she has been lucky.

DS1 working in a school on gap year - he has had 1 period of a 2 week isolation due to close contact.

Very lucky really - my friends son in another local secondary has had to isolate 3 times for 2 weeks due to close contact, and the school have just sent all his year (YR11) home again due to the number of positive cases.

nevergoingoutagain · 17/12/2020 07:22

Just 2 weeks for all of them. And that's because I had Covid. Not one of them has been isolated for school reasons.

Underhisi · 17/12/2020 07:23

1 week due to school closure due to staff self isolating. 3 days waiting for negative test result. Could have missed 10 days due to transport staff self isolating but we took him in (4 hour travelling each day).

BeakyWinder · 17/12/2020 07:23

Dd has had one isolation which fell over half term so she only missed a few days.

Me - no isolation, no furlough

Dp - same

We are in an area that has been in restrictions since summer.

Planet42 · 17/12/2020 07:25

5 weeks for yr11 ds. All due to positive cases at school and at home.

MistletoeandMoccasins · 17/12/2020 07:26

DC1 15 days (could have been worse, would have been 25 but there were overlaps of quarantine with holidays/a trace contact only being in school once a week)

DC2 3 days

kowari · 17/12/2020 07:26

None, year 10.

Homealonefan · 17/12/2020 07:36

10 days, that was due to my own child catching Covid and us having to isolate.

What they have benefitted from being in school far, far outweighs this. Much better than schools being closed or part time school when there is still the possibility of them having to isolate, and lord knows what the secondary school dc would be up to left at home 2-3 days a week.

We have been relatively lucky, and January might bring more bumps in the road, but I don't regret a single day they've been in school.

Most friends and colleague I know have had their dc have zero time off school, and we are in a tier 3 area.

Iamnotthe1 · 17/12/2020 07:36

My class have been lucky and not had our bubble pop although a few children have missed upto a week awaiting their (or a parent's) results.

One of my friends is also a Y6 teacher and her class have been in school for less than 7 out of the 15 weeks due to members of the class testing positive.

Groovee · 17/12/2020 07:39

I work in a school and not been affected by Covid. I never expected to be on leave because my dad died though. However there has been 3 positive cases this week and 2 bubbles are now isolating.

shallbe · 17/12/2020 07:40

None.

LazyMaureen · 17/12/2020 07:41

Y4 None
Y9 3 weeks - self isolation followed by bubble closure
Y11 None

Vanillaradio · 17/12/2020 07:43

4 days before half term (although this did mean ds also had to isolate most of half term) and 4 days in November (school closed for a deep clean due to outbreak in staff-ds' teacher not affected and he didn't have to self isolate). (There are 2 days of term left so hoping we make it to the end!)

badlydrawnbear · 17/12/2020 07:43

2 weeks each (year 1 and 5). DC1's bubble burst within a week of starting back in September. DC1 did get tested, but didn't miss any school as she was already self-isolating as a contact at the time (and she would have only missed 1 day, because I am lucky enough to work in a hospital that has its own covid testing for staff and their families and we got the results back in 5hrs)

Tumbleweed101 · 17/12/2020 07:45

My Y7 had to isolate two weeks due to a potential contact. My y10 has been in whole term.

PoopySalata · 17/12/2020 07:45

London primary school for mine:

Year 3 - two weeks before half term (positive case in class bubble).
Year 4 - two weeks after half term (positive case in class bubble).

Both off since Wednesday because the school has switched to home learning.

We also missed the first two weeks of school in September because we came back to the uk and had to quarantine.

HelloDulling · 17/12/2020 07:50

Since half term, my Year 10 has been in school for 9 and a half days. The home learning has been amazing, she’s not missed out academically, but she’s really missed her friends and her teachers. She is currently isolating, but can go out again at the weekend.

Year 7 DS has, thankfully, not been affected at all.
