@TheChineseChicken

I saw a chart recently (can’t remember where) that showed that vaccinating something like the top 2% of vulnerable people would reduce the death rate by 96%. I think once we get to that point it will be very hard to enforce masks and social distancing as it really will become comparable to other common diseases. I’m not endorsing that BTW, just pointing it out
How many people would have to develop Long Covid before anyone would think it's worth keeping the restrictions to reduce those numbers?
Mousehole10 · 16/12/2020 17:06

@EmbarrassingAdmissions I don’t think it’s worth keeping restrictions for long covid at all. I’m sure there are people living lockdown and restrictions but I, as well as a y others hate it and am going back to normal as soon as the most vulnerable are vaccinated. I don’t think ruining the lives of many people, hardworking people, children’s futures etc for a post viral syndrome that is actually common in many viruses is fair or proportionate for the general population so I won’t be following any.

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 16/12/2020 17:07

I wish they would schedule these press conferences outside working hr - why don't they let people know they will be on at 7pm.

'Alas' Boris your united Kingdom bubble plan is f*ed.

PhilCornwall1 · 16/12/2020 17:08

I guess it was an interesting press conference then. I can't be arsed with them anymore.

Watching paint dry is more interesting than those things and probably more important.

@TheChineseChicken

Sorry, my quoting function isn’t working, but I assumed that ‘the vulnerable’ meant all those down to 50 years, which include CV as well and CEV. Maybe I’m wrong
I'm pretty sure they just said they'd have the elderly and ECV some by Easter. Even if they do include the over 50s and CV there, the hospitalisation rate in the under 50s who aren't classified as CV is still high enough that the NHS wouldn't cope if we let rip.
dementedma · 16/12/2020 17:11

It just gets shittier and shittier. My father died last week ( not Covid) but we cant arrange a funeral until at least New Year, all legals and paperwork on go slow, sis with PoA will be stuck in London lockdown spending Christmas alone, brother who is co -executor stuck in China and cant travel, tenants in dads house now have to get 6 months notice rather than the 2 previously, which means we cant sell, which means we can't pay outstanding care home fees....all of this because of sodding Covid! Oh, and I've been "working" from the kitchen table since March watching my job slide away. I'm done now. Fucking done with it all.

nosswith · 16/12/2020 17:13

Did he start on time for once?

willsantausesantatize · 16/12/2020 17:15

Dementedma
I'm so sorry. So much stress and losing a loved one so recently too.
💐
I hope things can be sorted out soon.

PurpleDaisies · 16/12/2020 17:15

@nosswith

Did he start on time for once?
Don’t be silly! He was ten minutes late.
willsantausesantatize · 16/12/2020 17:16

@nosswith

Did he start on time for once?
Yes. It was on time with some new 'slogans' too.
willsantausesantatize · 16/12/2020 17:16

..Almost on time !

efes · 16/12/2020 17:17

@beela

Why is Boris smirking so much?
He's Priti Patel in disguise.
GetOffYourHighHorse · 16/12/2020 17:18

'Wow, what a cop out. 'We're not changing the rules but please don't use the rules.'

A 'cop out'? If they say no household mixing the msm would whip everyone up into a pitchfork waving frenzy and mn would be on about nazis and stasis. They are treating people like adults and saying clearly to keep it small, see one or 2 households maximum.

This is happening all over the world. All we have to do is stay in and have a quiet Christmas. Why must people fume about that?!

JamieLeeCurtains · 16/12/2020 17:18

'If you must bake in a tent, bake in a tent. But please, don't bake in a tent.'

Johnson's a million light years beyond parody now, isn't he?

Re: Long Covid. I'm wondering if there will now finally be an impetus for well-resourced research into, and treatments for, post-viral and viral syndromes, autoimmune inflammatory diseases, and genetic immune system markers etc.

Or will everybody be told to claim PIP?

CoronaIsWatching · 16/12/2020 17:18

No update on the tiers?

lyralalala · 16/12/2020 17:19

@RedToothBrush

BBC are now reporting that Wales have made the decision to change the law (not guidance) to be a maximum of two not three households.

Just minutes after the press conference to clear up confusion...

There would be much less confusion if Boris, and the main media outlets, made it very clear that he was talking about England.

The vast, vast majority of the time he is only talking for England, but there's very little emphasis put on that. The broadcasts for the devolved nations are stuck on random channels with much less coverage.

It'll never happen, but I've always thought it would be much clearer if they all made their broadcasts at the same with with Boris Johnston's shown live in England, Nicola Stugeon's in Scotland etc etc

elsaesmeralda · 16/12/2020 17:19

Has anything been announced about tiers?? Thought that was happening today?

JamieLeeCurtains · 16/12/2020 17:20

Tiers tomorrow, I think? Next to the jam ...

wanderings · 16/12/2020 17:31

Thanks all for summarising, and making me glad that I didn't waste my time watching Saint Boris, the patron saint of buffoonery! Even though time is one thing we have plenty of, like those in prison.

I say we need a Thursday Boo for Boris. Let him know that he's universally hated by the public, and probably by now most of his party as well - that seems to be the one thing that won't enter his thick skull, it can't get past the hair. Bring out the pots and pans.

TW2013 · 16/12/2020 17:32

@Loveatortie

Forget Christmas 2021,he ended by saying that 'lt will be over by next Christmas Hmm
That's great, we've never heard that something will be over by Christmas and then it lasts for years.

The issue with the vaccine is that they don’t yet have evidence as to whether you can still pass on the virus even after you have had the vaccine
PILs are in their 80s and getting the vaccine this week. FIL is already eyeing up holiday brochures and will be dropping by our (tier 3) house as hoc on a regular basis, I expect! He will view himself as immune, but I have questions over whether they can still carry the virus.

We are both just short of 50, I'm obese, DH slim, but I'm still a bit nervous as one healthy DS had Covid and it even knocked him about - he's still exhausted weeks on!

Lurkingforawhile · 16/12/2020 17:45

Tiers update is now tomorrow am. I'm guessing they won't drop any areas down a tier now. It's a bit strange they announced some increased tiers on Monday so maybe no change for everyone else? We have a very low infection rate in the town next down to us but it's rising very quickly so you wouldn't move it down a tier now.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/12/2020 17:49

@TheChineseChicken

That's not the 2% though. That's something like around 20million people or about 30% of the population. It's going to take a while to get that many people vaccinated.

The problem really is how transmissible this is virus is with no mitigation. If we get rid of the social distancing, the masks, the self-isolating, working from home then the virus will spread very rapidly. And the people that need to be admitted to hospital (not just those in the vulnerable group) will need to be admitted over a short period of time and overwhelm healthcare services. It's difficult predict what level of vaccination would allow different restrictions to end while still keeping admissions manageable enough not to need to cancel elective services.

My endocrinologist works with chronic fatigue and he's hopeful that there'll finally be some funding. I'm fairly sure that Boris has long covid as he seems to be suffering from brain fog so that should help things along.
