Are they really going to cancel Christmas?

And if they do, will loads of people just break the rules anyway?

It’s sodding ridiculous - myself and DP have barely left the house last week and won’t be going out this week either, other than walks in our local park. My parents have also been at home pretty much constantly. None of us has Covid 19 and the risk of catching it if we get together at Christmas is practically zero. So fed up with this shite!

49% want a u-turn , so it wouldn't be unpopular at all

I've seen one report today that it is now up to 65% of people that would like to see a u-turn and that Tory backbenchers are more in touch with the public mood than the cabinet (no shit).

It will be very unpopular with some people, but possibly not the majority, it seems. As I've said upthread, my experience bears this out - every person I've discussed it with is in favour of stricter rules over Christmas.

It's hard for many people, I absolutely get that, but this is a situation like no other. But people will make decisions on their own priorities.

midgebabe · 15/12/2020 19:33

Why give people a choice to make things a lot worse for others in January, to lead to more deaths, more sad nurses, more lockdowns? Do we give people a choice to practise with a loaded gun in a supermarket or would that be considered irresponsible?

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 19:34

Which is why the government do want to give families the choice . It’s Starmer that is pushing and the medical journals.

I just hope they (the government) don’t bow to pressure.

What a stupid analogy!

I don’t know one person who’s in favour of making the already fairly strict rules around Christmas even stricter.

I keep reading here that people are unable to get a Christmas delivery slot for their food and just wanted to let you know that Iceland are delivering up to Christmas Eve if that is a help to anyone. I realise you need to have an Iceland in your area to take advantage of this though.

Germany and the Netherlands have gone into lockdown til January. In Belgium we can have 1 person in our house. Most things are closed. Why does the UK think it's special and everyone should have a big mix up? Ditto, school closures.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 19:40

@Thewitchawineone well everyone i spoken to is not wanting stricter rules but as neither of us no the whole country we can't make an assumption , bit like polls that have asked 5000 or something

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 19:40

@TheresWaldo haven't germany and netherlands got slightly less restrictions for couple days over xmas though which is what we are talking about

TheWichitaWineOne · 15/12/2020 19:41

I'm bloody glad he is. Johnson's crap leadership and populist bullshit needs to be held to account. I've never had a good thing to say about Jeremy Hunt, but he's the only grown up in the room with this cabinet. He is urging an immediate rethink to avoid overwhelming the NHS in the depths of winter.

I'm not leaving it up to my family to be the fount of all COVID wisdom, nor would they assume that I knew better that the British Medical Journal and Health Service Journal.

There are times to throw caution to the wind and say 'fuck it, let's do our own thing.' This isn't one of them, in my view.

ZaphodBeeblerox · 15/12/2020 19:41

I really feel for all of you having to weigh up and make individual decisions about where to spend Christmas. It's all a bit shit, and I'm so angry and frustrated at the different rules for different people nonsense.

All our family live in other countries, so no way we can see them until the vaccine is more widely available. We were planning to bubble up with one other household - our kids are in a school bubble anyway - over Christmas, but we're all healthy adults and some of us have had covid and recovered months ago as well. I find it immensely frustrating that we've been put back in Tier 3, so we can't go to a restaurant or to a pre-booked hotel in Cotswolds, but my social media is full of people jetting off to Maldives and Dubai. I suppose rules don't apply if you're rich.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 19:41

@TheresWaldo in the uk apart from cornwall nobody at the moment is allowed anyone in the house not allowed in tier 1 or 2 so we do have quite strict rules in place already we don't think we are special

OhDearMuriel · 15/12/2020 19:44

@fedupfrances
You've got to view this from a bigger picture.
You don't know if you or your DH are asymptomatic (I believe 1 in 3 people are).
If you want to take the risk and possibly pass it onto your parents and potentially kill them, that's up to you and your conscience.
So do you think it's 'shite' now?

stovetopespresso · 15/12/2020 19:45

@fedupfrances sorry to insist but if u read the entire article rather than falling the headline grab then u would see the bit I quoted. it was from your article fgds why spread unhappiness and misinformation on here? slightly losing patience with this thread.

jazzandh · 15/12/2020 19:46

So if all these people want less restrictions and are in fact the majority - it shouldn't be a problem! There is obviously not going to be a free for all and plenty of people will make a sensible choice.......

Or are we saying that unless we are told what to do - we will all go mad anyway?

Kazzyhoward · 15/12/2020 19:46

We all live in our own echo chambers. Not so long ago, people were saying they knew no one who was voting for Brexit or Boris.

And Isle of Wight.

Mouldiwarp1 · 15/12/2020 19:46

The Netherlands are allowing three guests over Christmas and Germany are allowing up to an additional four close family members.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 19:47

@luckylavender in what way do you want to explain of does my mh not matter , like I said im in an at risk group for covid but honestly my mh is at its worse and is a bigger risk to myself at the moment , I never said Im alright jack but am I not allowed to be upset that if things change that i might struggle more than I am

Hardbackwriter · 15/12/2020 19:48

@Mouldiwarp1

The Netherlands are allowing three guests over Christmas and Germany are allowing up to an additional four close family members.
And Germany's doesn't include under-14s. I don't know why people make such sweeping generalisations about what 'Europe' is doing without even bothering to check.
Chersfrozenface · 15/12/2020 19:48

If they do change the rules about Christmas, a lot of people will be spending it completely on their own.

My daughter and my brother, for two.

Unsure33 · 15/12/2020 19:49

@TheWichitaWineOne

So really you are saying that the British public are not able to make their own judgements about their own individual situations.

And if they change the guidance everyone will adhere to the new rules?

I think there are a lot of people who might disagree .

I don’t care either way as we already decided it’s not worth the risk and are going to be on our own .

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 19:49

@Hardbackwriter because it suits there narrative to just say it or they have read it on someone elses post and haven't bothered to look at what actual rules are in place elsewhere

islockdownoveryet · 15/12/2020 19:50

Err no one thinks they are special ! We still want the agreed mixing of 3 households over Christmas and I believe Germany are having a slight relaxation for a couple of days that is what we all want . In parts of England we have had no mixing since the summer . In fact greater Manchester only had a few weeks it was allowed before it was told to stop . Unfortunately it seams it's only what's in London is what is in the media the north is forgotten about . People just need to be careful don't hug each other but if they change it at this late stage I'll ignore and I've followed there's ridiculous rules all the way through regardless of if I think they are correct or not .
