Are they really going to cancel Christmas?

And if they do, will loads of people just break the rules anyway?

It’s sodding ridiculous - myself and DP have barely left the house last week and won’t be going out this week either, other than walks in our local park. My parents have also been at home pretty much constantly. None of us has Covid 19 and the risk of catching it if we get together at Christmas is practically zero. So fed up with this shite!

There is not a chance in hell this government will u-turn on the Christmas rules unless there's a bloody good reason. It will be so unpopular, so if they do? Why?

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 19:01

@stovetopespresso um, it really doesn’t:

The data showed that 128,808 people had tested positive for the virus over that period. Together, they provided 9,789 common settings that they had visited.

The most frequent location they went to were supermarkets, followed by secondary schools, primary schools and hospitals.

@timeforanewstart - it's the spirit of what you said

key word being guidance so people who choose will likely still be able to

Key word being guidance so most people can ignore it.

@Lovemusic33

I don’t think it will be cancelled as such but restrictions could be tightened so the 5 days maybe reduced to 3 days and the number of households maybe reduced to 2.

I personally think that it should be reduce to 2 households so those who live alone don’t spend Christmas on their own. I know we all want to see our families and we have spent most of the year apart from them but in a few months time we can do that safety. People need to be sensible however depressing it is.

We will be spending Christmas alone (me and 2 dc’s), I’m looking forward to seeing my family in a few months when the vaccine has been rolled out to the vulnerable.

I think if it's reduced to 2, those who are single will be even more alone. Even with 3 households, it has been extremely difficult for me to get invited to join anyone, as people logically prioritise their families. For those with no families, or families abroad, if the guidelines are changed to two households only, then we'll most likely be alone

To save lives and ensure that people can still access hospital care obviously.

49% want a u-turn , so it wouldn't be unpopular at all.
nosswith · 15/12/2020 19:11

If there is a decision tomorrow to change the Christmas three household bubble, it will be because either the government or one of the devolved administrations is worried about hospitals being overwhelmed, I would expect.

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 19:11

Theyight do a tighter restriction do 3 day pass instead of 5 days.

Completely pointless. I hope Boris holds his nerve over this and tells Keir Starmer to F off!

agree nhs is under-funded but even Germany which has a better funded health care system is struggling to cope.

Germany has imposed much stricter lockdown conditions starting from tomorrow and have also tightened up the rules over mixing at Christmas.

They have also banned the sale of fireworks (which are only allowed to be sold in the few days before NYE) and there are none allowed, i think there may even be a curfew on NYE but i haven't checked yet.

The NYE restrictions brought in at the request of the emergency services and hospitals who have said they won't be able to cope with what they have now and the usual NYE injuries/admissions.

As for China. I worked for a Chinese company at the time. What they did was rather clever. They locked down after everyone had gone to where they go for the CNY and then told them to stay there. My factory had to close because internal travel in China was banned and only lifted very slowly and carefully according to local infection/transmission rates. It took a long long time for my factory to even begin to think about producing again and that was in a low-infection area.

To be fair one of the Taiwanese managers said to me "this kind of thing is a lot easier to do in a dictatorship" Grin

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 19:15

I think there will be a U turn and it will be blamed on this 'mutation' of the virus which seems to have just appeared, or rather, is only now conveniently being talked about.

Yes, very convenient isn’t it? Just before we no deal Brexit too...

And I just heard on the radio that the restrictions in Germany, much much tighter than ours, have been brought in when their rate of infection is one third of ours (with similar reduced rate of death etc). Apparently we are currently the highest rate of CV in Europe and one of the most relaxed in terms of restrictions.

As for China.

The country that got us into this awful sodding mess in the first place!

@CheltenhamLady lets hope the mutation is a lesser form they seem to think more contagious but think its mot more serious and think vaccine may still work

Sorry - there’s a new strain of the virus and they think the vaccine “may still work”? Is there a chance that this vaccine they’ve been working on for months may now be null and void because the virus has mutated?

Why would Christmas be Ruined?
Are people incapable of enjoying their own company?
We always have Christmas dinner on our own. It's great.
No relatives or forced jollity
Kids can play with their games all day long.
There s less pressure for things to be Perfect.
Parents don't have to drive so can enjoy a drink or two
Watch what they want on tv.
Go for a nice long walks.
People should try it.
To my mind It's so much more relaxing and enjoyable than being cooped up with lots of relatives for hours on end.
Every cloud?

This sort of smug post really gives me the rage. Angry

Just because you or your family are miserable gits/weird/unsociable/unpleasant or whatever so don’t like spending time together doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t.

We both only have small extended families but really want to see them at Christmas. We are planning to see my mum, step dad and sister.
We have done Christmas just me, DH and DS and I don’t like it. It just feels like a chilled out Sunday.

Some of us don’t need Christmas Day to go for a walk, play games, watch tv, have a couple of drinks (in that smug twee way you describe). We do it sometimes on a Sunday in normal times when we want to relax and have now been doing it every weekend for months!! I’m fucking sick of it!

And DS7 has specifically said he doesn’t just want it to be us on Christmas Day. He’s fed up too!

fedupfrances · 15/12/2020 19:24

This thread is so stupid. Surely you just listen to the scientists advice OP? Why would you be the exception?

Anyone except vulnerable / single people should stay at home with their own household for one year.

@MarahCarey everyone except the vulnerable should stay at home for a year - sorry what? Your comment makes no sense whatsoever Hmm

It could have been predicted we would be here, given the decision to keep everything open other than the ability to invite people home.

@underneaththeash

I have no intention of "cancelling Christmas" my mum's partner won't last until next year anyway and I will not miss his last Christmas. If he chooses to take the risk and shortens his life by a couple of months, so what? He has a DNR anyway, he won't be taking a bed away from anyone.
DNR doesn't mean that he wouldn't be treated if he became ill. They would just not do CPR if his heart stopped beating.
Unsure33 · 15/12/2020 19:26

@stepawayfromthekeyboard

And yet even when we do have rules it seems from this thread that people just think they are a joke .

Actually deaths per 100000 we are about 4th or 5th in Europe . Which is odd considering that the Groundhog Day post is that we are inflating covid figures deliberately.

Work that one out .

islockdownoveryet · 15/12/2020 19:28

Can't actually cancel Christmas, can they tell people not to mix yes will people listen nah .
I'm not and I'm not going to pretend otherwise .
Will be mixing with 2 other households as planned .

theThreeofWeevils · 15/12/2020 19:28

Why didn’t they carry on with the national lockdown after 2nd december until the week before Xmas, then we might not be in this mess

Yes we would, because of the schools.

Unsure33 · 15/12/2020 19:29

@underneaththeash

Which is why the government do want to give families the choice . It’s Starmer that is pushing and the medical journals .
