Are they really going to cancel Christmas?

And if they do, will loads of people just break the rules anyway?

It’s sodding ridiculous - myself and DP have barely left the house last week and won’t be going out this week either, other than walks in our local park. My parents have also been at home pretty much constantly. None of us has Covid 19 and the risk of catching it if we get together at Christmas is practically zero. So fed up with this shite!

@halcyondays

Didn’t China deliberately go into lockdown just before everyone was going to travel for Chinese New Year?

Is it worth having a big family gathering for Christmas dinner if one of you dies in January because hospitals have no capacity?

Wasn’t it just after? I thought that was part of the problem
timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 18:26

@Hardbackwriter thanks for posting that its funny how some claim that they are basically in full lockdown all over xmas
Very restricted yes but not full lockdown like some posters make out

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 18:27

@likeamillpond can't buy lights round here all sold out
Lots of amazing displays , great night out in car if you have little ones

CoolShoeshine · 15/12/2020 18:28

Christ people are babyish about Christmas.
My relative who I’d love to have home is ‘imprisoned’ by COVID in a care home and I’ve not been allowed to see them since March. There’s no way I’ll be allowed to see them at Christmas either, and after that not until they get access to vaccines or rapid testing. Same for millions of vulnerable people across the county whose illnesses make it too risky for them to mix. So no disappointment for me whatever the government decides because it’s never been on the cards.
If you’ve got you health and are lucky enough to have some family and friends you love don’t piss over it for the sake of sitting in a house together for a few days - meet outside if possible or don’t meet at all. I’m not saying don’t bubble with people on their own but if you’re lucky enough to have your own small household unit be grateful with that and leave the rest of the mixing until it’s safer.

roarfeckingroarr · 15/12/2020 18:30

@Whattimeisdinner referring to the 4 Yorkshire men sketch. Everyone is poorer than everyone and to suggest it's fairly normal to have a freezer is outrageously entitled / privileged etc.

Mummabeary · 15/12/2020 18:31

I think there will be lots of extra missing by "cancelling Christmas." Thinking about our arrangements, we are 3 families all working from home and have ordered shopping etc for next week or so to minimise exposure before we mix for 3 days at Christmas travelling by car. However if this all changes now then we'll all be forced out into busy shops to do last minute catering along with lots of other families as we haven't planned food for Christmas so the mixing actually increases!!!!!

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 18:32

@CoolShoeshine ok I will do that at a detriment to my mh as thats not an illness is it ,

CheltenhamLady · 15/12/2020 18:32

I think there will be a U turn and it will be blamed on this 'mutation' of the virus which seems to have just appeared, or rather, is only now conveniently being talked about.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 18:35

@Mummabeary exactly and the supermarkets here are not limiting numbers , scrapped one way etc
Yet the non essential shops that were forced to close once open have all restrictions in place
But like you say how many people will have to pile in to
Shops to buy food if announcement just a week before and thats assuming you have money , I have enough food in for a week , my dh gets paid xmas eve which was all fine as we were going to my parents for 3 days and i have food delivery booked for 28th ,

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 18:36

@CheltenhamLady lets hope the mutation is a lesser form they seem to think more contagious but think its mot more serious and think vaccine may still work , if its worse then we are all screwed anyway

underneaththeash · 15/12/2020 18:37

I have no intention of "cancelling Christmas" my mum's partner won't last until next year anyway and I will not miss his last Christmas.
If he chooses to take the risk and shortens his life by a couple of months, so what? He has a DNR anyway, he won't be taking a bed away from anyone.

Reindeermayhem · 15/12/2020 18:40

I think they may stop people travelling longer distances, say between England and Scotland, or England and Wales, but I expect all my neighbours with local relatives will still mix.

Not able to visit family here as so far spread. And one in a care home, seen once since March 24th.

Passmeabottlemrjones · 15/12/2020 18:44

To be honest now, if they are going to change it I would rather they just said no mixing at Christmas. We spent bloody ages trying to sort who was going to see who at Christmas and I can't be arsed doing that again with different rules - just go all or nothing now!

Covidnomore · 15/12/2020 18:44

It's been really hard for people who live far from their parents.

You don't just get to drop by for a quick visit outside when the weather is good. You don't get to meet up in the park.

How would lots of people feel if it was illegal for you to go and see your parents or other family members. That's the position we are in just now.

I am not going home at Christmas but I really would be angry if this happened.

mouldygrapes · 15/12/2020 18:46

Someone’s been on the blower to Peston...

Are they really going to cancel Christmas?
DdraigGoch · 15/12/2020 18:47

Keir Starmer can sod off![/quote]
Given that his 2 week "firebreak lockdown" idea turned out to be such a disaster in Wales, I won't be taking any notice of him.

Are they really going to cancel Christmas?
Chesneyhawkes1 · 15/12/2020 18:48

I kinda hope they do. Can have a quiet Xmas at home then. DH's parents have just been put into tier 3. We aren't in a tier 3 area.

Saying that I was shielding after receiving a letter from the government. But as soon as they ended that I was back at work on public transport travelling to tier 3 areas every day.

So the risk of seeing them isn't as great as that I guess. I'll just go along with what he decides.

luckylavender · 15/12/2020 18:48

@timeforanewstart - I'm alright Jack

Livelovebehappy · 15/12/2020 18:48

It’s a waste of time even considering cancelling what they’ve already agreed. Most people I know have already said they will break the rules anyway. The police aren’t going to be peering in people’s windows on Xmas day. The infection rates have dropped where I live in the North, and it’s obvious that the huge rise down South with the new variant has resulted in pushing the figures through the roof. Why didn’t they carry on with the national lockdown after 2nd december until the week before Xmas, then we might not be in this mess. It doesn’t help that power crazy Sturgeon and the equally power mad Drakeford in Wales are bending Johnson’s ear to cancel Christmas.

caringcarer · 15/12/2020 18:49

Theyight do a tighter restriction do 3 day pass instead of 5 days. Most people work on 23rd and 24th so can't go anywhere anyway. I fread the numbers in January.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 18:50

@luckylavender thats not what I said

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 18:54

Well if scotland changes rules I have scottish friends who go back to scotland every xmas as both have mums on their own
One of their mums has been in tears several times as she is on her own and think she would be devastated if they can't go up for xmas and they don't overly follow the rules anyway and would just go and who could stop them ? The border poilce ? Or would an exception be allowed as visiting a single relative

Belladonna12 · 15/12/2020 18:57

Not everyone will break the rules. Some people will be quite glad to have an excuse to stay at home.
Ginogineli · 15/12/2020 18:58

according to bbc it says they've no plans to cancel current rules but may issue tougher guidance - key word being guidance so people who choose will likely still be able to
