Are they really going to cancel Christmas?

And if they do, will loads of people just break the rules anyway?

It’s sodding ridiculous - myself and DP have barely left the house last week and won’t be going out this week either, other than walks in our local park. My parents have also been at home pretty much constantly. None of us has Covid 19 and the risk of catching it if we get together at Christmas is practically zero. So fed up with this shite!
@likeamillpond have you been to some of supermarkets and seen how bUsy they are , personally i avoid as much as possible and only certain amount turkeys etc will of been ordered
Plus we don't get paid until end of month I don't have the money to go but a turkey and trimmings for which I haven't budgeted , Yes we could have pizza and not starve but pretty shit for the kids. People are not following half rules now i have seen several on sm in groups of 6 in tier 2 meeting up inside pubs, homes and restaurants
Plenty if my neighbours have visitors in and out , groups of teenagers are hanging around
Yet a lot of people i know because they plan to spend xmas with family they are really now starting to limit interactions so who knows maybe a week of people doing this , schools finishing will all help with numbers
The goverment have no control over xmas
You can still order things online from supermarkets at the moment (until about the 20th) and I'm sure that there are plenty of turkeys left. I never do my food shopping until the 22nd and have no intention of doing things differently this year.

Mousehole10 · 15/12/2020 16:15

@likeamillpond We haven't been going into supermarkets since this all began, a we have been being sensible and not taking any extra risks. I'm not about to do so now. All food is delivered, and food deliveries now panned around Christmas plans. Too late to get extra ones now, christmas slots booked up weeks ago.

ancientgran · 15/12/2020 16:16

It's amazing how the mental health wellbeing of the nation apparently hangs on being able to mix with three households at Christmas and yet apparently remains robust against the necessary lockdowns and restrictions that will follow on account of those five days It's not just coping with the lockdowns for some, they will be dealing with loved ones in ICU or maybe dead.

excellent point . . . and I say this as someone who was pretty determined to see my sister and kids at Xmas. We cancelled that at the weekend. Main reason why is that I realised it would likely contribute to a longer lockdown in Jan, like the first one with school closures. My kids really missed school and I noticed my daughter in particular was badly effected and which came out in behaviour. She's been so much happier since she has been back. Another extended time off school will be damaging to her (and also to my son, though maybe not to the same extent) and also to my husband who shouldered the burden in terms of the home schooling. I think many parents and kids MH have been seriously affected by school closures so I really don't know why some are risking more closures and longer closures for the sake of a few days at Xmas.
Viviennemary · 15/12/2020 16:17

All these restrictions have been for nothing. Idiots.

stovetopespresso · 15/12/2020 16:19

@unseendoreen "Of course it can. So let's all stay locked up permanently shall we? We are entering la-la land."

nope. let's those who can show some restraint till we get the vaccine sorted. sorry if you're not one if them. its easy to judge (insert smug post about having a garden and wfh here). just have to hope you'll be sensible and lucky this Christmas not to spread it.

Unsure33 · 15/12/2020 16:19

@MercyBooth

With all your Tory slanging posts you do know it’s Starmer who is pushing for lockdown over Christmas don’t you ?!

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 16:21

@cantdothisnow1 but none of us know for sure if we have other celebrations together there are lots of other illnesses out there that people get and die from everyday

Unsure33 · 15/12/2020 16:21

@Viviennemary

No you are the idiot .

Look what’s happening in the USA and you can see what happens when no masks and very little lock down .

4% of the population and 25% of deaths .

Terryscombover · 15/12/2020 16:21

@MercyBooth - people also seems to have forgotten the law was altered after DC broke isolation to fit his excuse. I wonder how they would have reacted if Starmer did the same??

No one can cancel Christmas. People will do what they want, they do anyway, which is just one of the reasons are numbers are awful.

However all other major religious festivals and celebrations were effectively curtailed this year - someone tell me why this hysteria over Christmas? Did you protest over Eid? Or was that a case of "not my problem"?

When my parents are vaccinated (four weeks post booster) we will see them. And have a late Christmas.

mouldygrapes · 15/12/2020 16:21

Looks like it’s to be discussed, although that doesn’t mean anything will change. Haven’t RTFT so apologies if this has already been shared

Me too. I saw a school mum posting pics from her jolly dinner out with 3 friends (who I know for a fact are not part of her household), the evening her daughter started with Covid symptoms. She and her daughter subsequently tested positive.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/12/2020 16:21

It's not either/or, though, is it? We're going to have lockdowns and restrictions in January whatever happens at Christmas, which is why people are so upset at the prospect of losing a few days of not-actually-particularly-close-to-normality-but-slightly-less-grim time; how long do you think people can live with this without any respite at all?

It's not just January though, is it? It's a tinderbox of mixing indoors, with a more virulent strain while cases in the community are already high and hospital capacity is low.

Most people would like a break from restrictions, I'd like that to happen sooner than later.

It is one of the other although, I agree that it is safe to say that January will be shit regardless.

Elfieishere · 15/12/2020 16:22

@corythatwas

If I get covid then so be it. My whole family feels the same.

Do the nurses who might have to treat you in hospital feel the same? Do their families feel the same? The hospital porters? Their families? Have you checked with all the people you might infect?

And who imagines that people's mental health will improve if family members die and their therapist ends up in ICU?

My 24yo dd hasn't been able to have her bad hip seen to for months not because of social isolation but because her osteopath has been ill with Covid. This is really bad for dd's mental health- she is in pain all the time and struggles to walk.

Despite her own MH problems, dd has also had to spend a large part of the autumn trying to support her housemate who has developed long-standing health problems from Covid and is now going to have to drop out of HE in her final year. This added strain, apart from being horrible to the poor girl, has led to dd's MH taking a turn for the worse.

You know the one thing that would have improved dd's mental health: those people not getting infected with Covid.

SIL is a nurse and yes she feels the same. Il be seeing her xmas day and I seen her last week.

As far as I’m aware I don’t have to ask And I don’t care how everyone else feels about me seeing my family.

Plenty of bad things have happened in my own family due to covid but such is life and we will all have to get on with it which is exactly what I am doing.

myhobbyisouting · 15/12/2020 16:22

@walksen go and see your parents.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 16:23

@Breadwidow you know lots of peoples kids have missed school due to the spread of schools though

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 15/12/2020 16:23

I’m stunned at the number of posters who think the government won’t change the plans at the last minute because “what will we eat” “it’s too late” “we’re going to travel” “the presents are already at grandmas” etc.

Do you really imagine they care?

And yes, they know lots of people will do it anyway, but also lots won’t, and individuals don’t matter to them as long as the total number is reduced.

You know the one thing that would have improved dd's mental health: those peoplenotgetting infected with Covid.

That isn't the general publication fault but the government's incompetence.

I'm getting pretty sick of short sighted people pointing the finger at others, virtue signalling and being sneery about mental health when the fact of the matter is this entire shit show could have been completely avoided had they done what they were told to do back in February. And they've cocked up constantly since, in more ways than I care to list.

timeforanewstart · 15/12/2020 16:24

@fourteagallout have you looked at hospital cases and if we have beds free

FourTeaFallOut · 15/12/2020 16:24

Absolutely, it's shit. I'm not one of these "happy in lockdown" people. We are this >< close to vaccinating the very most vulnerable people in the country and reducing the death rate of 40% of people with the first two million most vulnerable. We could just hang on and not pass that trauma on by stoking the flames at Christmas.

Ah you're one of those. Makes sense now.

treening · 15/12/2020 16:25

General PUBLIC'S fault. Bloody autocorrect

Good for you. Makes no difference to those who don't want to risk going shopping or don't have money to shop
