Are they really going to cancel Christmas?

And if they do, will loads of people just break the rules anyway?

It’s sodding ridiculous - myself and DP have barely left the house last week and won’t be going out this week either, other than walks in our local park. My parents have also been at home pretty much constantly. None of us has Covid 19 and the risk of catching it if we get together at Christmas is practically zero. So fed up with this shite!
@likeamillpond have you been to some of supermarkets and seen how bUsy they are , personally i avoid as much as possible and only certain amount turkeys etc will of been ordered
Plus we don't get paid until end of month I don't have the money to go but a turkey and trimmings for which I haven't budgeted , Yes we could have pizza and not starve but pretty shit for the kids. People are not following half rules now i have seen several on sm in groups of 6 in tier 2 meeting up inside pubs, homes and restaurants
Plenty if my neighbours have visitors in and out , groups of teenagers are hanging around
Yet a lot of people i know because they plan to spend xmas with family they are really now starting to limit interactions so who knows maybe a week of people doing this , schools finishing will all help with numbers
The goverment have no control over xmas
Pizza 'pretty shit for Kids'?
I wish my parents had given us pizza on Christmas day!
Sprouts versus Pizza? No contest.
A childs idea of heaven.

Years ago we wee miving house round about Christmas time.
Most of the utensils were still in transit and I don't think the hob was working for some reason.
We ended up cooking curry in Christmas day.
The children talked about our alternative Christmas and how much fun it was.

It stuck out in their minds, even more than our regular Christmases.
Children are resilient and good at adapting.

@walksen

I'm getting quite upset about this possibility. I live alone and haven't seen my parents for a year. I think it is hypocritical to now say they must act to prevent spread when

Cases in the north are dropping fast after months in lockdown.

I got infected about 2 months ago along with at least half my colleagues because the government have let covid burn through my workplace and take legal action to allow it to continue to do so.

The way I look at it I have a narrow window to see my folks without infecting them before I have to worry about catching it again in spring.

I've been struggling with the fatigue from covid and have soldiered on but I've been looking forward to a rest and bit of company before we get put back in lockdown in january

If you are single and not in a support bubble, you could form one with your parents if they are not in another support bubble, that's is what we will do with single DS if the Christmas bubbles are cancelled or changed so that we can't form a Christmas bubble with him. Support bubbles are less restrictive anyway as they are not time limited
cantdothisnow1 · 15/12/2020 16:26
@cantdothisnow1 but none of us know for sure if we have other celebrations together there are lots of other illnesses out there that people get and die from everyday
Yes but they are not known risks, Covid is a known risk.

We know that mingling at Christmas will increase the infection rate, we know that some will die as a result.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/12/2020 16:26

We don't have any capacity at my local hospital, cases are being sent to other nearby hospitals. We've been in tier 3 for weeks and weeks and the rate has finally started to drop.

Whattimeisdinner · 15/12/2020 16:27

This thread is like a Daily Fail headline.
‘Keir Starmer demands Christmas is cancelled’

ancientgran · 15/12/2020 16:27

I can’t see the police working Xmas day just to check every report of too many round the Xmas table The police work Christmas Day anyway, it can be a busy day e.g. people get home from a day with relatives and they've been burgled, domestics are high, drunkenness is high, DUIs are high. Well they were in my day. Maybe everyone is well behaved now.

Belladonna12 · 15/12/2020 16:27
@edwinbear i have no food ordered in or food shop booked either as we are supposed to be going to my parents , and the supermarkets here are jammed with no sd or limiting on numbers , I am probably more likely to get there than sat at my mums
You can still get a delivery. Loads of people haven't got their food for Christmas anyway.

Elfieishere · 15/12/2020 16:28

Pizza 'pretty shit for Kids'?

Oh yes because xmas diner only consists of sprouts 😂😂

likeamillpond · 15/12/2020 16:28

Let's face it.
The food and all the trimmings is mainly for the adults.
On Xmas day, children are ALL about the toys.

ThelmaNotLouise · 15/12/2020 16:28

I get that people are upset about the prospect of them tightening the rules and I feel fed up too, but it's kind of frightening to see how many people are saying "sod it, we'll do what we want" and will meet up regardless. Are you seriously not worried about an explosion of cases in January, like there has been this month in America after Thanksgiving in Nov? That by NYE there could be as many Covid patients occupying NHS beds as there were in April and loads of operations and appts will be cancelled again? Are you prepared to home teach your kids again if things get so bad and schools have to close again? You all seem to think this is a problem that's currently only affecting London and the south and therefore the rest of the UK should carry on regardless, but if people from there visit relatives up and down the country they are going to be taking the virus with them!

Roselilly36 · 15/12/2020 16:29

I think there could be a last minute change of plan. Still 9 days till Xmas, a lot can change in a few days. I don’t think gov will makes changes unless they are absolutely essential, as any change will cause a lot of families upset, mine included, what a year!

EnPoinsettia · 15/12/2020 16:30

Yeah, I think they probably will. They’ll dither til the last minute, blame shift as much as they can and then say that’s all folks.

ancientgran · 15/12/2020 16:30

Pizza 'pretty shit for Kids'? I wish my parents had given us pizza on Christmas day! When mine were kids chilli was the most popular Christmas dinner. DH and I had turkey, I made a chilli Christmas Eve and the kids had that. I thought everyone should have something they wanted on Christmas Day. If we are alone this year we are thinking of having a curry for a change.

Benjispruce2 · 15/12/2020 16:30

They should modify them IMO. They should never have given such generous parameters. 24/25th maybe 2 households.

EnPoinsettia · 15/12/2020 16:31

Especially as it’s Hove who’s doing the meeting. Boris hates him, so likes to make him the bearer of bad tidings.

Belladonna12 · 15/12/2020 16:31

@myhobbyisouting

"You can still order things online from supermarkets at the moment (until about the 20th) and I'm sure that there are plenty of turkeys left. I never do my food shopping until the 22nd and have no intention of doing things differently this year."

Good for you. Makes no difference to those who don't want to risk going shopping or don't have money to shop

So you don't want to risk going shopping but you're happy to mix households.Hmm As I said you can still get online deliveries until the 19th or 20th so you don't need to go shopping anyway.
ancientgran · 15/12/2020 16:33

i have no food ordered in or food shop booked either as we are supposed to be going to my parents , and the supermarkets here are jammed with no sd or limiting on numbers , I am probably more likely to get there than sat at my mums I don't know about everywhere but my local Sainsbury's has click and collect slots available for tomorrow and Thursday if that's any help.

Benjispruce2 · 15/12/2020 16:33

As for people not having any food in, I think that’s pretty poor planning as all along things have changed at the last minute. We are in a pandemic after all. We are at home but if we’d planned to go elsewhere I’d have still got a small turkey or crown just in case. That’s what freezers are for.

myhobbyisouting · 15/12/2020 16:33

"You all seem to think this is a problem that's currently only affecting London and the south and therefore the rest of the UK should carry on regardless"

Oh, the irony.

midgebabe · 15/12/2020 16:33

Around 10% of under 50s seem to suffer long covid variants
Between 1 and 10% of parents are likely to die if this thing is uncontrolled . Up to 10% of adult children needing to bury a parent.

So whilst the vast majority will be ok, that's at not insignificant minority who won't be

And none of the restrictions are about controlling the death rate ( although perhaps if they hadn't decided to try and trad lives for economy we would not be in this mess)

They are about keeping the wheels turning , on the nhs, the water companies, food supply chains

How many businesses can cope with 10% of their workforce off sick for a few months ?

And another batch of employees wanting special leave to cope with the death of a parent ?

How do those employeee cope with communal burial for their parent? Like what has already happened in Brazil.

Ok it probably won't be your parent, but if it affects around 10% of your employees, how do you keep the phone lines connected ?

How would the nhs recover if they end up turning away children or young adults to die in pain from anything not covid , because they can no longer cope ?

It's not about your personal situation. That's irrelevant. It's about the country as a whole.

myhobbyisouting · 15/12/2020 16:34

Such privilege

Benjispruce2 · 15/12/2020 16:35

Privilege? A freezer?

likeamillpond · 15/12/2020 16:35

I don't remember thinking as a child
Yay! Time to stop playing with my toys, stuffing my face with chocolate money and selection box so I can tuck into that delicious Turkey, sprouts and DCanbury sauce dinner.
My mother was a good cook but I don't remember any of the Christmas dinners except maybe for the crackers.
They were important

What's important to an adult isn't always important to a child..

ThelmaNotLouise · 15/12/2020 16:35

myhobbyisouting I get your point about the irony – what I meant is aren't people in other areas worried about cases going up again if the current plans remain? As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm Tier 3, London, and think we should be banned from travelling outside of the area into lower tiers for Xmas.

treening · 15/12/2020 16:36

Privilege? A freezer?

I live in a 500sq foot flat with my DH and DS. Our kitchen is basically the size of a large cupboard. We have an under counter fridge with tiny icebox.

When you don't recognise your privilege, yes you are privileged.
