Do you think the Government will cancel the Christmas bubble idea?

I keep seeing things mentioning Government cancelling the Christmas bubble idea. Germany are not allowing Christmas mixing. Do you think Boris will consider it here?

The tiers are being reviewed this week and a few places are likely to be moved to Tier 3. What's the point in moving to Tier 3 for a few days then telling everyone to ignore it and mix with other households for 5 days for Christmas. It just doesn't make sense.

I think they'll keep it but urge people not to. Probably another press conference with Ballance and Whitty showing how bad things are and how bad things will be in January if everyone mixes.

Dotinthecity · 14/12/2020 07:45

I don’t really think it matters whether they do or they don’t, people will do their own thing.

ChasingRainbows19 · 14/12/2020 07:46

No. As stupid as it is, that’s too late. Might get Boris or Hancock on tv press conference saying to be careful the virus hasn’t gone away. Hands face space blah blah.

They know that some people will be doing as they please anyway and it can’t be policed countrywide if they did ban it.

It’s down to people to make sensible decisions for them and their families. Some are happy to take the risk. ( including vulnerable and elderly). But look towards the USA two weeks after thanksgiving. It’s pretty bad.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 14/12/2020 07:46

No, even though there will be a spike in January, I don't think they will, because that would mean admitting they were wrong to consider it in the first place. Boris still wants the glory of 'saving Christmas' Hmm Mixing over Christmas doesn't make sense but they'll say it's allowed but get lots of people to advise caution over Christmas, then blame us all for not being careful enough when hospitals are full to overflowing in January.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2020 07:47

I wish they would but doubt they will.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 14/12/2020 07:47

No, people will be encouraged with leaked info from Whitty et al not to mix but they wouldn't dare.
We'll just have to cope with the January fall out.

ToDoListAddict · 14/12/2020 07:48

Germany are still allowing their Christmas mixing. Sky news report states "up to 10 people will be allowed to meet from 23rd December to 1st January"

The UK won't change their minds on the Christmas bubbles this close to Christmas.

Lemonsyellow · 14/12/2020 07:49

It’s too late to change it now.

Babybornbabyborn · 14/12/2020 07:49

They have to allow christmas mixing, because they know people will do it anyway. A country infected because of them ‘saving Christmas’ is far preferable to them than everyone breaking the rules they put in place

SnuggyBuggy · 14/12/2020 07:51

I think they've accepted that people will mix anyway at Christmas. There will be another lockdown in January.

museumum · 14/12/2020 07:52

Germany are allowing Christmas mixing at home similar numbers to us but closing bars, shops and restaurants so very similar to us.

Mindymomo · 14/12/2020 07:52

I thought Germany were still allowing mixing on Christmas Day. I don’t think on ours, they will back track, but will advise strongly not to mix, which most people I know are doing anyway.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 14/12/2020 07:54

Why would they? Numbers are falling really fast.

Oh, hang on, that’s just Yorkshire. London’s rising, so I guess they’ll put the whole country in lockdown.

There is no way Boris has the guts to do to southern Christians what he did to Northern Muslims, so no, I don’t think bubbles will be cancelled.

ChasingRainbows19 · 14/12/2020 07:58

Germany enter a stricter lockdown this week as measures haven’t worked. Schools and shops closing too. But a little at home mixing and Christmas for a couple of days is allowed. There are measures all across Europe but all different for Christmas. Governments are aware it will be difficult to police to ban Christmas gathering and people will do it anyway!

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2020 07:59

They should never have allowed it in the first place but too late to change it now.

MindyStClaire · 14/12/2020 08:08

There's no way. For one thing, people won't listen. It'd be so unpopular he just won't do it politically. And once people break the rules at Christmas, they'll be more likely to break them going forward. Better to relax the rules a bit as they've done so people can see some family after a long hard year (and before a grim January, let's be honest) and then there's a better chance we'll all go back to being good little girls and boys afterwards.

But yes, if I'd had Eid ruined on me I'd be pretty pissed off watching Christmas be protected like this.

RoseAndRose · 14/12/2020 08:13

People I talk to are without exception thinking about the risks associated with their plans, and most are having quite minimal visits (days trips, not staying over; lower number mixing than the maximum permitted)

Lumene · 14/12/2020 08:14

No unfortunately not and plenty of people I know have taken this as a sign it’s fine to meet up.

SellFridges · 14/12/2020 08:17

No, they’ll keep it. The Christmas idea is all about making a certain portion of society feel better about being stupid and also meaning they don’t need to police the stupidity. Very few people I know are planning to see anyone indoors - lots of plans for coffee in the garden with grandparents on Christmas Day etc.

I’m annoyed by the whole concept tbh. It’s miserable enough this winter without the additional misery of continuing in Tier 3 or worse in January just so people can have a “normal” Christmas.

PaddyF0dder · 14/12/2020 08:17

I really hope it gets cancelled.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 14/12/2020 08:18

To everyone saying that they’d be annoyed at Eid being cancelled and Christmas protected please do remember that Easter is the holiest Christian festival and that everyone was in lockdown for that.

NailsNeedDoing · 14/12/2020 08:18

No, they won’t. It would be pointless even if they did because people would still stick to the plans they made to be within the rules, or they’d be planning on breaking the rules anyway.

PaddyF0dder · 14/12/2020 08:18

Yeah but easter matters fuck all culturally.

Newgirls · 14/12/2020 08:20

Very few people I know are mixing at Xmas - lots of oldies choosing not to bother. Might not be as big an issue as people think.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 14/12/2020 08:21

No but beg people to be sensible. Then lockdown everything for new years. Probably for another four weeks.
In the case of schools I fear longer. Not expecting kids to go back until end of March now. So let them enjoy their last few days of term.
