Do you think the Government will cancel the Christmas bubble idea?

I keep seeing things mentioning Government cancelling the Christmas bubble idea. Germany are not allowing Christmas mixing. Do you think Boris will consider it here?

The tiers are being reviewed this week and a few places are likely to be moved to Tier 3. What's the point in moving to Tier 3 for a few days then telling everyone to ignore it and mix with other households for 5 days for Christmas. It just doesn't make sense.

Only certain parts of the country were impacted when ‘Eid was cancelled’. The timing and the way it was announced was rubbish, very much a panic move from the Government. However, other parts
of country would have been able to meet family for Eid it wasn’t a blanket ban. Also weren’t the original rules before the announcement was made that only 2 households could meet indoors, so if people had been planning a big party they would have been breaking the rules anyway.

I've created something that works for me - got a few support bubbles and am seeing family.

Works for you and screws everyone else. Nice.

SonjaMorgan · 14/12/2020 09:03

No they won't. They know it is a bad idea but are unable to enforce any restrictions. Half of my DCs year group are currently off school and I am struggling to understand how anyone could be considering a family gathering.

Backbee · 14/12/2020 09:05

They know that people will still have people over, I guess having some rules that are reasonable is a way of trying to keep some sort of control over the situation. Even if it was cancelled, we do not have the police infrastructure for them to be visiting households and charging them.

bombymobey · 14/12/2020 09:05

That's similar psychology though, you want the gov to say no in order to legitimise your choice & remove blame from you so you are not the bad guy.
The gov by allowing some mixing means people don't think they are breaking rules & will not blame themselves or others for that choice because gov said it was ok. They are not the bad guy for wanting to mix & don't have to break rules.

Sittinbythetrees · 14/12/2020 09:09

Unseen - where (roughly) are you? That is different to where I am - most people being cautious. Also ‘a few support bubbles’ don’t kid yourself - that’s just you seeing who you want and mixing freely.

Why not find something that works for you? Smile Good you still have faith in these restrictions, I cannot fathom how/why?

It's not working, is it? Let's just carry on regardless doing the same thing over and over again and expect it to change. Definition of insanity isn't it?

PurpleDaisies · 14/12/2020 09:13

You an keep your pathetic passive aggressive smiley face.

It's not working, is it?
Because people like you aren’t following the rules.

Sittinbythetrees · 14/12/2020 09:13

Unseen - you do realise that the only reason you can ignore the rules is because other people are following them. I loathe that attitude.

I'm not kidding myself, I'm not following the rules. I'm in a rural ish area but the county is Tier 3 - rates round here are extremely low.
midgebabe · 14/12/2020 09:20

...Doreen's post should finish " at present"

AuntieStella · 14/12/2020 09:26

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit

People say that the Government has no choice but to open up Christmas as it would have been impossible police, what we've ended up with is state sanctioned fuck-wittery as a result.
I really love this turn of phrase
Bushola · 14/12/2020 09:30

No point wheeling out Whitty and Valance. They lost all their credibility with their last outing where it say 10000000000000 deaths per day by 13th Oct.

sqirrelfriends · 14/12/2020 09:31

I bloody hope so, it's one day vs extra deaths.

DumplingsAndStew · 14/12/2020 09:32

@canigooutyet

Those saying it's too late. Did you all forget that Eid was cancelled at the very last minute? People would have been travelling. Food cooked/getting cooked.

NHS are already on their knees because of all the beds that have been taken out of the wards.

Did the Government actually ever specifically allow, and endorse, getting together for Eid in the first place though?

Taking out your need for hyperbole, do you have evidence that wouldn't have been the case had restrictions not been in place?
Bushola · 14/12/2020 09:40

No just hearsay and conjecture. Which is exactly what Whitty and Valance used and they admitted their numbers were wrong.

ImNotCutOutForThis · 14/12/2020 09:45

No and of they did people won't listen. Me included! May be unpopular opinion but this is all becoming bloody ridiculous

Dartsplayer · 14/12/2020 09:57

I think what they should have done is to close the schools 2 weeks early so that people mixing have a chance to isolate beforehand instead of letting everybody mix and then the poor NHS having to cope with the fallout in January

DonkeyMcFluff · 14/12/2020 10:07

I wish they would cancel it. MIL might get over her tantrum and speak to me. She’s blanked me for a month ever since I said we were planning to spend Xmas at home. DH (selfish git) made me tell her so she’d be annoyed at me instead of him.

Ninbuscl · 14/12/2020 10:08

I thought Whitty and valances predictions have been fairly accurate so far

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 14/12/2020 10:23

I thought the figures had been called out in some select committee meeting or some such after the last lockdown was called?

ssd · 14/12/2020 10:26

They won't but they should.

They don't have the courage.

Far easier to shake their heads in January and say we told you that it's not wise to mix, even if its allowed...

Then it's not their fault

tinselearedcow · 14/12/2020 10:43

It won't, because making such a decision would require integrity and backbone.

I think anyone who mixes this Christmas without good reason (such as single people who would otherwise be alone, people with terminally ill relatives etc.) really needs their bumps read. It's just not worth it.

loutypips · 14/12/2020 10:47

Whatever they say people will ignore and do what they want anyway.
