Do you think the Government will cancel the Christmas bubble idea?

I keep seeing things mentioning Government cancelling the Christmas bubble idea. Germany are not allowing Christmas mixing. Do you think Boris will consider it here?

The tiers are being reviewed this week and a few places are likely to be moved to Tier 3. What's the point in moving to Tier 3 for a few days then telling everyone to ignore it and mix with other households for 5 days for Christmas. It just doesn't make sense.

I think they should cancel the Christmas bubble but say that if someone lives alone they can visit another household for Christmas. So two households mixing, but not three.

Those saying it's too late. Did you all forget that Eid was cancelled at the very last minute? People would have been travelling. Food cooked/getting cooked.

NHS are already on their knees because of all the beds that have been taken out of the wards.

Yes and look how many carried on with their plans anyway because it was too late".

--and not actually illegal ( though people were led to believe it was and some police forces unlawfully enforced it as if it was) as there was no legislation until a few days later

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2020 11:10

It's not too late for people to take responsibility for their own actions over Christmas. But the Government have said they can mix so they will. Hmm

umpteennamechanges · 14/12/2020 11:11

@JellyBabiesSaveLives

Why would they? Numbers are falling really fast.

Oh, hang on, that’s just Yorkshire. London’s rising, so I guess they’ll put the whole country in lockdown.

There is no way Boris has the guts to do to southern Christians what he did to Northern Muslims, so no, I don’t think bubbles will be cancelled.

Case rates are rising again in 2/3rds of all English Local Authority areas...

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/12/2020 11:25

The idea of spending a few hours with her Grandchildren has been very beneficial for my mother's overall help. In the past nine months she's seen them once... Again for a few hours. Only place she can see them safely is inside her own home.

Usually at Christmas we would stay for 5 days. I'm driving the 2.5hrs each way as a day trip to make it as safe as possible. We've accepted the risk as worth it. We will be keeping away from people as much as possible (except food shopping) from when they finish school on Friday, which gives up 7 days until our Boxing Day trip.

And when exactly did we become a Muslim country?
Heatherjayne1972 · 14/12/2020 13:12

Doesn’t matter what the government say at this point
People are just going to do whatever they want anyway

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 14/12/2020 13:16

@YukoandHiro

My theory is that they've always known it would be a disaster but that they also knew people would do what they wanted at Xmas. So by allowing a few days of relative freedom they are preventing these people from psychologically becoming rule breakers. They know Jan-March will bad and they need the public onside for whatever strict measures they need then. They want to avoid people thinking "oh well, we didn't follow the rules at Xmas ana it was fiiiine, so let's not worry too much now"
You hit the nail on the head here. Exactly right I would say.

Yep! I'm carrying on with my plans regardless.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said:

“We’ve set out the details of the Christmas guidelines.

“There are no plans to review the Christmas guidance. What we’ve said alongside that is that the public should continue to be cautious.

“I think the Prime Minister said it’s the season to be jolly careful and we would emphasise that we should continue to do that.

“We’ve been clear that it’s a limited easement to allow families to bubble over the Christmas period after what has been a very difficult year for many people.

“But it remains important for the public to follow the guidance.”

Of course. This government is well known to sticking to what it said last week...

Bushola · 14/12/2020 13:37

If schools are an issue let households without kids mix and ban those with kids from doing so.

An issue, not the issue 🙄
Spodge · 14/12/2020 13:45

I can't see them disallowing the Christmas bubbles. If they do then many people will proceed with the arrangements they had anyway. They may even see more people - may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb.

Then, when the vast majority see no immediate consequences to having broken the rules (the police can't attend every household and fine them, and Covid is not going to infect every person, whatever the papers say) they will likely break the rules again. And again.

Tinkerbellflowers · 14/12/2020 13:46

I hope the government do a U turn and cancel it. Although, I think single people who are on their own should be able to join one household.

PurpleDaisies · 14/12/2020 13:48

Although, I think single people who are on their own should be able to join one household.

They have been able to do this for months.

ineedaholidaynow · 14/12/2020 13:59

People with school children should be making sensible decisions about mixing with households.

What I find worrying is that some people are viewing the fact that the Government are relaxing the rules for Christmas means that mixing with 3 households is risk free. I saw a poster on another thread saying they are now rethinking their Christmas plans as she saw something on tv this morning saying that it is very risky meeting and mixing with people indoors. How could they not know this before watching that?

People with school children also need to think about schools in January/February. Too much mixing over Christmas is probably going to cause even more disruption in schools than there is now.

Frazzled2207 · 14/12/2020 14:01

downing street has just said they have no plans to change this guidance but Welsh government has just hinted they are not ruling out cancelling it.

Hapixmas · 14/12/2020 14:03

@Frazzled2207 when was this said please?
I watched the first 10 mins or so of Vaughan and he didn't say it in those 10 mins. He said he urges people to think carefully and not mix if it isnt necessary but the rules are still there.

Frazzled2207 · 14/12/2020 14:06

I think it depends on your interpretation but guardian summarised as follows. That said I think daft for any governement to rule anything out completely given the fast moving situation...see below

The Welsh health minister, Vaughan Gething, has said it is possible the rules around Christmas may be changed or a lockdown could be imposed before the festive break.

Asked at the Welsh government’s press conference if Wales could reconsider the four-nations approach to Christmas, Gething said:

You can never say never ... nothing is off the table it depends on the choices each of us is prepared to make.

On the prospect of a lockdown before Christmas, he said: “Every option is still available for us.” He added that ministers would discuss the situation at cabinet today.

MummaBear4321 · 14/12/2020 14:07

Nope. There would be uproar. They may do some form of u-turn though and have vallance and whitty come on with more charts to try and scare people into not seeing family with threats of January lockdowns and dead Grannys.

But dont forget to keep spending money people! Let's not forget what really important at christmas.

Hapixmas · 14/12/2020 14:08

Thanks @Frazzled2207 I didn't listen in to the press questions. This makes me 😢 as havent seen my parents for a while and they live there. Selfish of course. But we've all been extra careful over the last few weeks and will continue to until Christmas.

TheQueensGambit · 14/12/2020 14:15

I predict, as a lot of people have already said, they won't change the rules officially, but I do think the message that it isn't a good idea might actually be given out. And rightly so! It isn't a good idea.

We have plans with family for Christmas, but it won't kill me to cancel them. For some people, the impact of cancelling their plans, on their MH, might be worse than the virus, but for me it's the other way round. Even if it was a mild illness, meaning I wouldn't have to go to hospital, I'd still rather avoid the whole family coming down with it just so we can have Christmas with other family members. This is one Christmas for us out of what I expect will be many, many more. So, from our perspective, postponing Christmas and having it in summertime isn't a big deal.

If the message from government changes, I will have more of a leg to stand on with extended family, if we do cancel.

tootyfruitypickle · 14/12/2020 14:16

We’re doing a Christmas bubble with 3 families but not on Xmas day but ten days after the end of school and isolating for those ten days. Which is also the advice Nicola Sturgeon has sensibly given out today .

South Wales is in a world of Deep Shit.

Wales has a lower number of hospital beds than anywhere in England or Scotland (not 100% on NI). The figures are through the roof and I think the welsh government has pretty much tried every other restriction to try and get numbers down already.

And yet its still in the worse position its been since the crisis began.

I don't know if the Welsh Government will have many other options but to at least say not to bubble for Christmas (even if they don't ban it). They know lots of people will go ahead anyway, but its bad there.
