Oxford vaccine

Been told at work we will be getting this at next round of vaccinations. It always seems to be high regarded on here so I'm quite pleased about this. Would you have a preference or not bothered?

With all the current tier 3/4 until we are vaccinated restrictions has anyone changed their mind?

Far from clear that the vaccine will work against the new super spready strain. Apparently it doesn't even have the Spike the vaccine targets. Could even make the situation worse if it has the perverse effect of negating the normal immune response. At very least super spready implies almost 100% HIT which is not possible given disproportionate impact of Covid on the elderly/infirm where vaccines are always least efficacious.

Cannot believe the level of gung-ho cross our fingers and do it regardless going on.

what is your source for that and which vaccine.

GIven the different types of vaccine do different things presumably it is not all of them?

And I think we have to cross our fingers right now and hope

source?

Apparently eh?

Em777 · 20/12/2020 13:57

The worry is the Oxford vaccine hasn’t been tested on many over 55s.

Dinnafashyersel · 20/12/2020 13:57

Google is your friend.

Not really. There's all sorts of shyte on Google, especially about this topic.

I follow this fairly closely and the last I heard was that scientists are pretty confident that none of the vaccines will be affected, though further tests need to be done. What is the source for your claim above?

cathyandclare · 20/12/2020 14:06

It still has the spike, the spike has just changed. Most experts believe it most vaccines will still be effective. They can also be tweaked to cope with future mutations like the flu jab.

The Oxford vaccine has been tested in the the elderly and showed a robust immune response ( published in a peer reviewed journal). The specific low dose/standard dose subset was 18-55. However, in the SD/SD groups with a more diverse demographic it still showed efficacy that was good enough.

Oxford/AZ have forwarded more data ( the last lot was only to Nov 4th) to the MHRA, so they will be fully informed when they make their decision. It's thought that it may be from the extensive US arm of the trail.

Quartz2208 · 20/12/2020 14:07

@Dinnafashyersel yes and I have googled and can find no such claim so please cite what your source is as I simply cannot find it.

Quartz2208 · 20/12/2020 14:09

Indeed the Gupta Lab in Cambridge has mentioned the deletion and said it shouldnt effect vaccination

CaveMum · 20/12/2020 14:10

Re timelines on approval for the Oxford vaccine, at the risk of sounding all “he said, she said”, the mum of another child at my daughter’s swimming class is married to a manager at Astra Zeneca in Cambridge. She said on Friday that they’ve been told approval is imminent and that they should be prepared to have their Christmas leave cancelled at short notice.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/12/2020 14:18

Anyone know yet whether the Oxford one will be safe for people with allergies ?

DougRossIsTheBoss · 20/12/2020 14:20

The new strain does have the spike protein. There are mutations in it but it still has it. So far they think the mutations are enough to make it more contagious but not to prevent vaccines working.

The whole reason the vaccines are targeted against the spike protein is that it is a key component of the virus. It could not infect human cells without it.

Google is your friend.

Case in point why we have so many scaremongering, incorrect and misinformation on a lot of these threads.
Google is not your friend. I'd rather find out my information from trusted sources such as research papers, or peer reviewed reports of the research.

Bathroom12345 · 20/12/2020 21:18

Cave - laughing at what you said and normally I would be rolling my eyes but somehow I believe you! Too many other sources saying similar.

Distributed doses: 2,838,225
Administered doses 556,208

Things are going well Smile

Those are very beautiful figures, where are they from?

tobee · 21/12/2020 04:07

Interestingly Dr John Campbell seems to think the US will approve the Oxford Vaccine, which has been hotly debated, here and elsewhere. Whether he is correct or not, only time will tell.

Be pretty crucial to know that, wouldn't it? And Moderna et al!

Who' confirmed that tier 3/4 restrictions will continue until we are vaccinated ?

I think you are jumping to conclusions

We are in a dire situation, yes, but this should not be confused with specific concerns people have around these vaccines.

And no, I have not changed my mind one bit.

I think he is right actually they will want a lower cost one.

It will depend on the US trial they will want data from that but if that too looks around 60% they will roll out presumably in the clincs etc and those on obamacare

Quartz2208 · 21/12/2020 08:47

trulydelicious - Matt Hancock pretty much said it yesterday

Dinnafashyersel · 21/12/2020 09:47

Precisely why I recommended Google to track down your preferred trusted source. Much better than 2nd hand journalism or some unknown interpolating on social media.

oh I hope this is true. I have heard rumours on twitter that before christmas is possible though 28/29 december is still most likely
