Covid-19: Oxford University vaccine shows 70% protection www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55040635

With it just needing to be kept at normal fridge temperature it makes the Oxford vaccine a lot easier to administer especially for poorer countries or where people are more remote.

I think it's cheaper too isn't it? About £3 a dose so less than £5 if the 1.5 doses proves to be the way to go.

I think it's still very hopeful.

ScrapThatThen · 23/11/2020 07:44

It's amazing news. If that dosing regimen result can be replicated then this cheaper vaccine just got even cheaper and we have it ready to roll in the UK and there was NO serious illness in the vaccinated group and reduced transmission which is what we want? So happy.

Lucidas · 23/11/2020 07:46

2021 lets fucking goooooooooooooo

Tupla · 23/11/2020 07:52

On Radio 4, they were saying it was 70% with two full doses, but 90% if the first dose was a half dose. Something about the way it primed the system.

nosswith · 23/11/2020 07:55

If it means an illness with a few days off instead of something fatal for even 1% of people that is a step forward. The point about developing countries as well, and in any case the more vaccines, the more people can be vaccinated in a short space of time.

Deliaskis · 23/11/2020 07:55

This is great news. It's only marred slightly by the others having hugely out-performed expectations, but 70% is great, and if we learn that actually we can expect 90% with the 1.5 doses, then actually this is hugely positive news.

Covidfears · 23/11/2020 07:57

Everything the UK does is shit

Char2015 · 23/11/2020 07:58

Such good news. I think we can expect vaccinations to start next week. I work for the NHS so everything is gearing up ready to start. I don't expect authorisation to take too long. By the end of the week they should have the green light to go.

Firefliess · 23/11/2020 07:58

They're saying 70% overall. The 90% comes from a sub group who were given a smaller first dose. But the numbers in this sub group can't have been very big so there could be some margin of error here.

What do you do with a vaccine that's cheaper and probably quicker to produce, but significantly less effective than another one? Give people both? Give it to the under 50s?

Ridiculous comment!

@Covidfears that is totally uncalled for. Scientists have worked flat out on the Oxford vaccine for the benefit of everyone. I for one am grateful and in awe of them. This is very encouraging news especially because it can be transported so easily.

Lovemusic33 · 23/11/2020 08:01

The Oxford vaccine was given as one half dose followed by a full dose so it may be more effective if given as 2 full doses? 70% is still good and o think studies have shown that those that did catch it after the vaccine only had a mild case?

tobee · 23/11/2020 08:02

I think they have to do an equation with the efficacy %age and the uptake %age to get a herd immunity %age?

OP posts:
laudemio · 23/11/2020 08:02

This is great news give this vaccine to youngervlower risk people and more effective, experimental vaccinations to the older people.
Hope this is approved before Christmas.

No, it appears to be more effective as a half dose followed by a full dose (90%) it was 62% effective with 2 full doses.
lovelemoncurd · 23/11/2020 08:03

@Covidfears Biscuit

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 23/11/2020 08:04

From the Oxford website, to clarify:

'Phase 3 interim analysis including 131 Covid-19 cases indicates that the vaccine is 70.4% effective when combining data from two dosing regimens
In the two different dose regimens vaccine efficacy was 90% in one and 62% in the other
Higher efficacy regimen used a halved first dose and standard second dose'

It seems a strange result to me. (I'm no expert.) Rather homeopathy-esque!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/11/2020 08:05

Everything the UK does is shit

I know, they only managed go do a so-so vaccine, as opposed to the all the other countries who have none at all.

Hmm But I hear North Korea is lovely this time of the year, and there's no COVID there, so if everything is shit here there is always a way out.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/11/2020 08:06

This is great news - especially the price point.

CrunchyCarrot · 23/11/2020 08:06

I think it's very good news and looks like with some tweaking of dose amount the effectiveness could be greater than 70%. Interesting that our immune system reacted more strongly with a lower dose. Very interesting indeed!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/11/2020 08:18

One point in its favour (so I gather) is that it can be kept in normal fridges, whereas the Pfizer one needs to be kept at 80 deg below!

That in itself would seem to make the Pfizer less practical for general use.
