Covid-19: Oxford University vaccine shows 70% protection www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55040635

I’m looking forward to more information. The press release has invited a lot of talk.

I’m even not sure how long the trial will be if they have to further test 90% one?

raviolidreaming · 25/11/2020 19:00

Is this of any real significance?

I can't think so. The reason the meningitis vaccine was used as a control was for public health reasons: they didn't want people knowing they'd had the vaccine because of side effects / thinking they had side effects and that they'd had the vaccine and then not socially distancing or wearing PPE appropriately etc.

ForBlueSkies · 25/11/2020 19:10

@BlueBlancmange

From the Wired article:

But the two trials had other substantive differences. In the UK, for example, the volunteers who did not get the experimental Covid vaccine were injected with meningococcal vaccine; in Brazil, those in the comparison group were given a saline injection as a placebo

Is this of any real significance?

So Astra Zeneca have announced that they are carrying out further tests to gather more data re the 1 and 1/2 dose efficacy.

Will that delay the roll out?

tobee · 26/11/2020 19:28

According to Astra Zeneca ceo Pascal Soriot it won't delay regulatory approval:-

How can it not delay approval? What dosage is going to approved with the current trial status?

After all that excitement feel so deflated now. Oh well at least they are going to further improve it hopefully 🤞
Trut · 26/11/2020 19:46

Oh dear, I didn’t mean to make you feel deflated. Sorry 💐 I’m sure things will get much better soon

This is a piece I found about how a vaccine will be approved by regulators:-

I think they will be looking to improve data (Astra Zeneca)

OP posts:
tobee · 26/11/2020 19:52

Don't forget the other two will be looking for approval by the same process so there should be alternatives.

I think others are coming up too.

Trut · 26/11/2020 20:09

Thanks tobee. It is a bit short on details though. And it is not clear what dosage will be approved. Honestly, i would be concerned if it is pushed through before the new trials announced by AZ on rigorously testing the serendipitous dosage are completed

tobee · 26/11/2020 20:38

I think it's important for the public to have confidence in any vaccine that it is not being "pushed through" in order to get the uptake to the best levels.

Part of that confidence in a vaccine that is being developed during a global pandemic is to be able to trust what scientists tell us the efficacy percentages required.

Again that's a efficacy- uptake equation I believe.

*there's an efficacy - uptake equation

As I wrote on another thread:-

As time goes by it looks increasingly that I'm not alone in speculating that this is the US and Wall Street making a concerted effort for months to undermine the cheap Oxford Vaccine for financial reasons. See The Times today.
