So happy that my partner and big family can all be together this year. We are all really close and get on brilliantly. So pleased at the news today!

Posters are so divided and opinionated about meeting for Christmas. There is a lack of compassion for anyone else and I really don't understand where the anger comes from.

You say you want to see relatives and you'll have posters ranting about how you'll give granny covid as a present and kill her.

You say you want to stay at home to protect people then you are a miserable git who is hiding those who want to see family.

I personally am beyond caring. I will be staying home, we have vulnerable family members and a new tiny baby in the family. I assume that many who will be meeting family would have done it anyway.

@DameFanny

Not transient, transitory/temporary

It's incredibly unlikely that immunity is transient, for a number of reasons, both mathematical and biological.

If you look at both the SAGE and Welsh Government modelling you can see that they have long term immunity in their differential equations.

No one really thinks that it's any more than a tiny minority that can get re-infected. For those infected by SARS_1, they still see T-cell immunity 17 years later.

It’s just so everyone is catered for surely . If your family have all had it, it’s pretty stupid having a law that says you can’t meet up.
Anyone whose worried won’t be meeting up.

Yeah, and then those families who aren't worried will go back to work and school and spread it. Selfish fuckers. I have to send my DC to school because I can't afford the fines if I don't. I have to go to work (where I am exposed to it often) because I can't afford not to. I can do without selfish people thinking they don't care if they get it who then pass it on to my family which includes two CV people and one CEV person.

Star they allowed Cheltenham and stereophonics. It caused masses of deaths after infections.
They locked down a week late which caused an estimated 10-15k extra deaths.

There is no evidence to show 5 days of mixing nationally and freely won't have the same effect. What I hope is people will continue to be sensible despite the restrictions being lifted a bit.

Also agree re gyms and swimming pools. Evidence showed infection rates through tracing of contacts was minimal in these settings. Peoples mental and physical health need to be as good as possible if we are to mix more.

@MiaMarshmallows 🎅🏼🎅🏼🎅🏼

I feel the exact same. I have followed every single rule since March, busted my gut at work for the NHS, DH is a key worker too so we have had no ‘family’ time or done our houses/garden up like so many others.

This year is the first in years that we both have Christmas Day off. I genuinely can’t wait. I get to see my kids open their presents then have my mum for dinner.

All the posters complaining that it’s only one day, how often do you get Christmas with your families uninterrupted by work? Have you ever missed your kids faces on Christmas morning?

We can do Christmas while being sensible and cautious.

@starfro

Pandemic is over, we're past the 2nd peak. All the data shows that. Christmas mixing will make no difference in the long term.

Sadly a complete dumbing down of science and maths education has led to some of the opinions on here.

You might want to brush up on your own history education - the third peak of the 1918 pandemic somewhat contradicts your logic...

Brilliant news.

What's with all the misery trolls on here?

Because when the country has to go into lockdown again, our business is likely to fold along with thousands of others. I completely get it if you have a dying relative who won't see another Christmas but for all those that can't wait just a few more months to see their family, I can only assume your job or business is safe.

Some of us don’t plan to get the vaccine.

I won’t be, neither is my partner or kids. My Parents don’t want it either.

So how "big" is your partner's "big" family? Seems it is likely to be up to 4 households so that is not really a big family.

We normally spend Christmas with my family - 16 of us from 9 different households so that is never going to be allowed.

We would not risk it anyway. My parents are in their 90's so just plain silly to all get together.

Me and DH will spend Christmas on our own and we will all get together some time next year

Brilliant!

So the last month of not being able to meet anyone is effectively being thrown away as Johnson tries to claw back a bit of popularity - and then blame the public for the next spike in the New Year.

That's just brilliant! Angry

Panem et circenses as Junvenal and, probably, Boris Johnson would say

Probably not a lot of panem after Brexit, either.

Circuses only, and they are all monkeys in the cabinet throwing sh*t.

It doesn't matter when you lock down, that's the point. If you lock down early you get a massive second wave. This is what Patrick Vallance said specifically in March. Locking down too late does risk an overwhelming of health services, but that didn't happen in the UK.

From the moment the virus emerged those deaths were inevitable. Unless we'd locked down in January and stayed indoors for a year, there is no way to avoid it.

Look at the Czech Rep or Poland. Tiny first wave, massive second wave.

@Elfieishere

I was going to see my family anyway so the fact Boris has said it’s ok doesn’t really make much difference.

And I have a feeling this is why Borris has done this. The people that are going to meet up with family would have anyway. Possibly more would have done it just because they weren’t allowed too. Now he’s given everyone the green light he won’t have to worry about policing restrictions. Basically he’s telling people to do what ever they like but there will be consequences in the way of a lockdown for jan/Feb. Those with a ounce of common sense will stay at home and wait until the vaccine is rolled out to have big family get togethers.

I'm more worried about the 30,000 a week in UK dying of cancer and now those who are being refused treatment! And also diagnosed!! So 120,000 a month dying of cancer alone and your worried about fatality rate of under 3%????

The phrase “celebrate with your relatives in December, bury them in January” rings in my ears.
