So happy that my partner and big family can all be together this year. We are all really close and get on brilliantly. So pleased at the news today!

@Coffeepot72

The phrase “celebrate with your relatives in December, bury them in January” rings in my ears.

but if that is true then we'll never be out of lockdown

Personally I'm still terrified of passing this horrible virus onto my mothwr and father who are 70+ and moderate risk due to asthma issues and low immune systems.. my partner and i will be going for xmas dinner but will be staying 2 metres apart and using our initiative with touching things unnecessarily in their house etc.. if they decided to invite all the family (which they haven't) I'd be urging them not to.. best to keep meetings as small as possible still i think until these vaccines have taken away some of the threat

My parents are resigned to the fact that we won't be meeting this Christmas, irrespective of what Boris announces. Ultimately, if people are at risk, that doesn't disappear just because the govt make an announcement! So we won't be seeing them until we can do so safely. Their choice. We might see our best friends, who live locally to us and whose kids are at school with ours...

And I have a feeling this is why Borris has done this. The people that are going to meet up with family would have anyway. Possibly more would have done it just because they weren’t allowed too. Now he’s given everyone the green light he won’t have to worry about policing restrictions. Basically he’s telling people to do what ever they like but there will be consequences in the way of a lockdown for jan/Feb. Those with a ounce of common sense will stay at home and wait until the vaccine is rolled out to have big family get togethers

I agree that people will do what they want but lockdown doesn’t overly effect me as I’m already working from home until at least April next year and I don’t plan to get the vaccine either.

Well if this lockdown we are in at the moment is working as it should then why shouldn’t we have Christmas?

What do people want to happen - lockdown forever? If either works or it doesn’t. Surely.

I think it's ridiculous to concentrate on Christmas when we are missing so much of our daily lives still.

Our day to day lives are so lacking at the moment, and to prioritise 5 days over the longer term quality of life for all is ridiculous.

I don't want 5 days of a half hearted Christmas as it will probably create the most depressing January known to man... January + Covid + Brexit = god help us.

Who cares about massive increases of suicides, domestic violence and a soaring employment rate? Christmas matters more than any of that Hmm

I'm more worried about the 30,000 a week in UK dying of cancer and now those who are being refused treatment! And also diagnosed!! So 120,000 a month dying of cancer alone and your worried about fatality rate of under 3%????

Not 30,000 a week @nicky7654, closer to 3,100 per this quick Google

@nicky7654 about 10,000 a week die in total each week in England and Wales (www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/weeklyprovisionalfiguresondeathsregisteredinenglandandwales ) I suspect you've misread 3,000 as 30,000.

As for rates, the best way to think of the Covid effect is that it has doubled your chance of dying this year (unless you are very old which seems unlikely) www.bmj.com/content/370/bmj.m3259 .

It's really sad that people are still passing away from cancer but we're not talking about cancer in this post, it's about covid... there are many many horrible diseases out there that affect lots of people horribly... aids, meningitis, TB.. just to name a few...the difference with covid is that it is spreading rapidly through the population at an alarming rate.. the whole point is that we need to keep on top of it or alot more people will be dying from it... i might be being naive here and haven't really done much research on cancer but as far as i was aware, they aren't refusing treatment? Many adverts on tv at the moment are urging people with cancer symptoms to contact their GP stating that they are still being treated?

Why does everyone on MN think that they and everybody they know is constantly carrying Covid, just waiting for the chance to pass it on to someone middle aged or older who will almost certainly die?

I live in a big city and I've still only known of two people who've had COVID confirmed so far (and they're both fine now).

There seems IME to be a huge difference in attitude between the cities and provinces, with the former very relaxed and the latter literally engulfed in fear.

I wear a mask when necessary and wash my hands thoroughly when coming home, but my two DCs, when not under my control, are carrying on as normal along with their entire generation as far as I can see.

And we're all ok...including my very elderly parents who see my DCs regularly and are equally relaxed.

Starting to get a bit fed up with all the hysteria, so I'm with you OP!!

Where's that stat from? The fact that we're currently in lockdown and apparently rates are "dangerously high", with about 1 in 80 people having Covid, I find it difficult to believe that 1 in 4 are carrying it. In fact, I think that's complete bullshit.
