So happy that my partner and big family can all be together this year. We are all really close and get on brilliantly. So pleased at the news today!

The OP sounds as if they are having a big gathering not just meeting with a couple of family members.

Why do people think cases will have dropped significantly before Christmas? Do you think elderly relatives will be safer at Christmas than now? How safe will it be mixing elderly vulnerable relatives and school age children in large groups in someone's lounge?

@purplechairandcat I don't think it has been officially announced, it is being said in some parts of the media

Misery trolls? Spend some time on a ventilator fighting to breathe. You might change your mind. I’ve been there and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Like it or not, the Pandemic will follow a certain course, and some Christmas mixing will make no difference to long-term overall infections or death.

It won't make any difference to the very small chance of someone ending up getting very sick. It's already "baked in", as a SAGE member would say.

Fucking ridiculous.

Way to prolong the misery well into 2021.

The sensible voices on this thread will probably still be taking precautions, but the absolute fools whooping delight will ensure this country suffers much longer than we should, given the resources we have.

And Brexit is just a few weeks away. We couldn’t have a worse Government to manage us through these crises.

I am happy that I can legally see parents again for a few hours, and they can see their grandchildren, for the first time since September and second time since March.

It's not a free card to have massive raves... But just that a few hours will make a world of difference to people.

Unfortunately, the government don’t have their finger on the pulse of Mumsnet. If they did, their approach may be one of continued lockdown and restrictions. What the government IS doing is looking at the general consensus of a nation who are growing tired of the impact COVID is having and therefore highly likely to ignore the rules come Christmas. By imposing some rules, there is at least guidance for those wanting to meet, to follow.

@ilikebooksandplants

I’m a bit confused about the (potential) relaxation being floated but I don’t know if I’m just being really stupid. Blush

If I go and stay with my family for two weeks (but stay within that bubble, and don’t socialise outside of it) will that a) be breaking the law and b) any more risky than staying for five days?

Sorry, I just can’t work out what is sensible anymore because my head is battered by it all!

If you are ill woth anything infectious, stay at home.

That’s pretty much all you need to know.

The Xmas law isn’t out yet but no doubt it will be confusing.

Just because your ‘allowed’

Doesnt mean its safe!!!!

Common sense is keeping my whole family apart, none of us are this stupid!!!!

@starfro

Brilliant news.

What's with all the misery trolls on here?

I am trying to pretend I didn't read this.

This situation is an ongoing nightmare for anyone who works in a sector which has been completely and utterly screwed by lockdowns.

Christmas is the very, very, very least of their worries. Keeping the family home is a much bigger concern than a nice, jolly Christmas.

There are thousands of businesses which will collapse as a result of "saving Christmas".

Christmas is one sodding day.

I'd rather they open gyms and allow sports again because that actually benefits people's health.

Stuffing their face on Christmas after not exercising for weeks or months helps no one and either way, people who want spend time with family on christmas are going to do whether it's allowed or not...

LivingMyBestLifeNOT · 22/11/2020 21:31

and yet all the NHS workers that have shifts on xmas day carry on as normal while everyone else is mixing and enjoying their time....
Doesnt seem right to me
Im a single parent to 3 DD and have decided to stay at home xmas day

Last time we had the misery trolls saying that VE day, then the beaches, would result in massive spikes.

What a surprise, they didn't.

In summer, out doors: not in winter,indoors, during second wave,when NHS and school's are creaking.

We spoke to our parents yesterday and said we aren't meeting up or hosting anyone this year no matter what the rules are. We can wait until spring/summer once the vaccine has been rolled out, then have a proper knees up without having to worry about the aftermath.

@starfro do you have any modelling based on a coronavirus with probably transient immunity? All your references seen to be based on flu?

@Hoppinggreen

Yes, you will all be magically immune for 5 days so mix freely with the elderly and vulnerable

And their DC won't infect their year-group and disrupt hundreds of other children's education. And not need to use the NHS for their self-inflicted covid-19 and pass on their virus to the poor patients and staff and their families.
Some people's consciences are impervious, but they will hopefully get what's due to them in the end.

Not transient, transitory/temporary

One of my relatives wants to come to UK, isolate, have his adult sons (who live in different places, so are two different households) to stay with him. They will doubtless see one set of parents, which must make 4 households, and then want us to go up and see them too.

I have explained that if isolating as has come from abroad, then no-one can visit, but got told not to be so stuffy.

It will cause ructions, but I am not going to see him.

How exactly are we allowed to feel? Can't be positive and hopeful, can't be worried, can't be happy, can't be sad.

OP, I hope you get an enjoyable day, I'll be seeing my (by then) 89 year old MIL. The alternative would be her in her house all day on her own.
