So happy that my partner and big family can all be together this year. We are all really close and get on brilliantly. So pleased at the news today!

@HumanFemale1

I'd rather they open gyms and allow sports again because that actually benefits people's health.

Stuffing their face on Christmas after not exercising for weeks or months helps no one and either way, people who want spend time with family on christmas are going to do whether it's allowed or not...

I'm not saying I agree with Christmas easing of rules, however mental health is just as important as physical health. Some people will benefit more from seeing a family member or two at Christmas than they would going to the gym.

@TheGreatWave

How exactly are we allowed to feel? Can't be positive and hopeful, can't be worried, can't be happy, can't be sad.

OP, I hope you get an enjoyable day, I'll be seeing my (by then) 89 year old MIL. The alternative would be her in her house all day on her own.

You would always be allowed to do this. Support bubbles have been in place since the summer without geographical or time restrictions.
You could always have been your MIL, no matter what the Christmas restrictions (or lack of).

We will be spending xmas in our little household and not putting my parents at risk

Surely common sense prevails over the need to get pissed and eat too much figgy pudding???

Nuts.

I wont be meeting up with my parents at Christmas, they’re 70 and it’s just not worth it.
I work in a school, my DP works in a high risk job. The area we live in has a rising amount of cases .
If cases (in our area) magically drop before then I might reconsider but it’s not a risk I want to take for a couple of days.
I don’t care if people on MN think that this makes me a misery troll.

Drat. I was hoping they were going to say 2 households and a smaller number of people. Now I will have pressure put on me to host the extended family for Christmas dinner. I was secretly hoping for a year off.

Yay, covid going to be paused for 5 days to allow people to get drunk and drink Turkey. Covid will be switched back on after the bank holiday Monday.

Are people really that silly that they are going to risk their relatives health (possibly lives) just so they can spend one day with their family?

I for one will be staying at home with my dc. I haven’t seen my grandmother since February, Why would I risk giving her covid for Christmas?

I’m actually looking forward to schools breaking up so I can have the kids home safe and we can enjoy Christmas on our own.

Pandemic is over, we're past the 2nd peak. All the data shows that. Christmas mixing will make no difference in the long term.

Sadly a complete dumbing down of science and maths education has led to some of the opinions on here.

Pandemic is over!!!!! I've never heard such bollocks in a long time.

Everyone’s so het up, I don’t get it.?

It’s just so everyone is catered for surely . If your family have all had it, it’s pretty stupid having a law that says you can’t meet up.
Anyone whose worried won’t be meeting up.

Got a week between New Year where even on a normal year many aren’t at work. Kids aren’t at school.

If the massive queues for the supermarkets are anything to go by, that’s what will kill us.

This is effing stupid. Anyone with common sense wouldn't do it. This country is a joke.

OP, I'm also from a big family and we spend every Christmas together. Will I risk it this year? No I bloody well won't.

Idiots.

You can say no though. Just because they put pressure on you doesn't mean that you have to do something you don't want to do and that would put your family at risk.
