To be weary of the vaccines?

Will you be getting it?

Will you be allowing your children to get it?

I'm curious to peoples responses as my social media seems to be full of posts from people mocking those who will get the vaccine.

I'm by no means an anti Vaxer. Myself and my children have had all vaccinations and have the flu jab yearly. My only worry is that not enough is known about the long term side effects.

OP posts:
Bluewavescrashing · 21/11/2020 18:22

I'll get the vaccine. I'm a teacher though so back of the queue.

Harleyband · 21/11/2020 18:23

@Whatwouldscullydo

I won't be getting it

We won't know for years if its effective or safe . Politicians free to experiment on themselves if they wish to attempt to set an example

This is simply not true. These vaccines have been extensively tested and go through the same rigourous approval process as any other approved vaccine or medication. I work in the field and will absolutely accept the vaccine with gratitude and will vaccinate all my family as soon as I can.
WanderingMilly · 21/11/2020 18:23

Well, I'm not going to be first in the queue for the vaccine.
I'm not an anti-vaxxer, I had all my children vaccinated and myself (for travel, for instance, in the days before COVID) and this year I've had the 'flu jab which I don't normally do.

However, I am very wary of the USA vaccination. It seems to have been produced very quickly, wondering if it has been rushed through testing? I am sure as more vaccinations come on the market, there will be refinements made.

Personally I would prefer the Oxford one (but I understand we won't get a choice)...that one works in a similar but slightly different way, and they have taken longer and been more methodical with the testing.

I shall have the vaccination eventually but as I said, I shan't be first in the queue. And I've had COVID anyway (not that it confers long-term immunity by all accounts, but all the same....)

Givemeabreak88 · 21/11/2020 18:24

Nope I won’t be having it neither will my children , I’ve noticed the opposite to what you say though op on MN anyway pretty much everyone on here seems to be desperate to have it , which I find odd.

tortoiseshell1985 · 21/11/2020 18:25

This virus is so deadly I'm waaay down the list for a vaccine....I think April was the suggested time for my age group
Will have it only if we get our civil liberties restored first

maddiemookins16mum · 21/11/2020 18:25

The question I ask is ‘would I encourage my mum to have it’, if yes then I would too.

RelaisBlu · 21/11/2020 18:26

I am neither weary nor wary.
Yes I will be getting it.
The mockery of people on Facebook should be ignored on this, as on all issues.

randomsabreuse · 21/11/2020 18:26

The vaccines are clearly based on existing research. I suspect Pfizer's mRNA one has been around for a while while they tried to make it stable at higher temperatures than -70.. because a vaccine that is that awkward to store will not be economically viable without a pandemic!

Oxford is also based on existing tech- just needed the genetic code from the new virus.

Will be having the vaccine when it's offered to non vulnerable U40s..

firstimemamma · 21/11/2020 18:26

I wouldn't get it. Maybe in a few years.

laxxy · 21/11/2020 18:27

I'm not sure how I feel, kids have all the vaccines & I get the flu jab through work (kids get it too) so I'm pro jabs.

don't think the developers of the vaccine or the government will tell us enough about it to reassure me. It feels rushed. I know people will come on and say it's been rushed through quicker than other vaccines purely because of the amount of money thrown at it and that doesn't compromise it's safety. I don't know.

This is pretty much how I feel, I don't particularly trust the government.

wanderings · 21/11/2020 18:27

There have been so many lies throughout this whole plandemic pandemic, that I wouldn't be at all surprised if it comes out in a few years' time that the vaccine is a hoax; Saint Boris, desperate to escape from the corner into which he has painted himself, has said tearfully to his cronies "pleeeeeeeease (sob sob) find me something that looks like a vaccine, I don't care if it's real or not"; it has echoes another big ego saying "find me a reason to have a war, I don't care if it's real or not". Cynical? Moi? Of the professional lying egomaniacs whose wages we pay?

I'm weary of the close-up pictures of injections which always accompany talk of the haloed vaccine.

Neron · 21/11/2020 18:27

No I won't be having it. I don't have the flu jab either.

Itawapuddytat · 21/11/2020 18:28

I will take if if it is offered to me. I work for NHS on a patient facing role, so there is a chance I will be asked about it sooner rather than later, and I will be happy to accept it. DH works for NHS too, but not dealing directly with patients, however he is 50+ so I assume he will be offered too at some point, and he says he will take it as well.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/11/2020 18:29

I work in the field and will absolutely accept the vaccine with gratitude and will vaccinate all my family as soon as I can

Great. Have it. You are perfectly entitled to do so as am I to not.

We all get to choose. Well provided all of this hasn't somehow been taken advantage of in order to force law abiding citizens into having all their choices and rights removed and they decide to completely remove our rights to refuse medical treatment....

Time will tell

laxxy · 21/11/2020 18:29

Oh I am in my 30s though & relatively healthy if I was older/had underlying conditions I would likely just go for it.

rosie1959 · 21/11/2020 18:29

Cannot see how not trusting the Government has anything to do with it They didn’t develop it nor will they have any part in passing it for use in the Uk

Aposterhasnoname · 21/11/2020 18:30

@Bluewavescrashing

I'll get the vaccine. I'm a teacher though so back of the queue.
FFS, you’re “back of the queue” because you’re healthy and under 50, not because you’re a teacher. I was sympathetic to teachers calls to move up the queue, but you’ve just single handedly changed my mind. Well done.
TheRealJeanLouise · 21/11/2020 18:32

I mean the people developing these vaccines would have only had the education of about 2 years degree, another 2 or 3 for a specialist masters, another 3 for a PhD in the subject and then almost a lifetimes experience of working on these things but yeah, you’re definitely doing the right thing by making decisions about your health based on the thoughts of randomers on the internet.

Pukkatea · 21/11/2020 18:32

There has never been a single medical treatment approved, in the history of everything, where the 'long term effects' have been known. That isn't how medical approval works. Stage 4 of any clinical trial is post approval and release to the public, always.

For what it's worth, if a vaccine has not shown significant side effects in stage 3 trials it is almost impossible that significant long term effects will show up later. How could they? You get a jab and you're done. If you get side effects, you get them then when the vaccine is creating its effect. Long term side effects apply for medicine that you take long term, like statins, anti rheumatics, beta blockers etc.

Sushirolls · 21/11/2020 18:33

I won't be having it, even if it means resigning from my job( I work in care). I think DH is on the fence, DS1, DD1 & DD2 have all said they won't have it but I think DS2 will have it if offered (early 20's, so will be awhile). My DSis and I have agreed that we will refuse consent for our DM to have it.

Quartz2208 · 21/11/2020 18:33

The flu jab though is created from scratch every single year it just uses the same process as the year before.

Which is certainly at least the Oxford Vaccine it has been repurposed for COVID.

I also agree with Chickentikka often a lot of time is bureaucratic delays something that hasnt happened here

And they have been tested for the short term effect.
And as for rushed Oxford Vaccine has been a year in the making (they started pretty much once China admitted to it existing) so not exactly rushed

generalexpert · 21/11/2020 18:33

Natural selection is a great thing.

CodenameVillanelle · 21/11/2020 18:33

I'm not in a category to be offered it for a long while and nor are most of the people claiming it's 'rushed' and 'experimental'. Those who are likely to be offered it are at greater risk from covid and will hopefully have a more rational understanding of balancing risk.
If covid is still a global risk by the time vaccines are offered to the general public then I will definitely get it.

Chailatte20 · 21/11/2020 18:34

No I won't be getting it immediately, we've all had our jabs so I'm not an anti-vaxxer by any means. I feel it's too rushed and the long term side affects aren't known yet.

I'm not putting my kids for it atm as I don't know how it will affect them particularly their reproductive health. There are too many unknowns for me just yet. I recently read about the US flu jab saga of 1975 so that hasn't calmed me either.

BluebellsGreenbells · 21/11/2020 18:34

Those not getting it, are you flying on everyone else to protect you?

I hope countries insist on a vaccine for travel. I hope care home staff and NHS and the elderly get vaccinated so they can meet family and friends and staff are free to go to see client’s in safety.

I hope my teens can have it so they can party with friends and have group holidays. Plus I hope universities insist on vaccinated applications only.

Your freedom is just a safe vaccine away.
