If the vaccine was immediately available for everyone - would you have it?

Not after an argument I’m just genuinely wondering! I have spoken to two friends and one would have it and one wouldn’t. If the vaccine (still with 90% effectivity) was available for everyone in the UK, would you have it straight away?

@Yogatomorrow

A serious question: is it the case that governments and the pharma companies will be exempt from litigation in cases of side effects?

I read this once and would like to find out if it is true.

I do have concerns. Going from thousands of test subjects to millions means that unknown side effects could arise. Same with time: going from months post-injection to years.

I guess I would, but there are doubts in my mind.

I believe that the strict liability regime for vaccines won’t apply but the common law rules of tort/negligence will be
Soxandseven · 09/11/2020 20:04

Nope - and I work in pharmaceuticals/clinical trials

ThatDamnScientist · 09/11/2020 20:14

@amylou8

Nope! I would not trust Boris et al to tie their own shoe laces, I'm in no hurry to have their rush job vaccine. As a fit 40 year old female my risk from covid is tiny, probably much smaller than the side effects of a vaccine. If I was a 60 year old over weight smoker with diabetes my risk assessment would probably reach a different conclusion.
But it isn't a vaccine from BOJO et al is it? The vaccine wasn't even developed in this country by our scientists. It was developed with Pfizer and BioNTech; American and German companies!
OpheliasCrayon · 09/11/2020 22:16

@Caroncanta

Therefore, whilst I completely believe that the vaccine is safe, and that there is very little risk to people from having it,

Longer term we don't know this is true though.

No we don't but it's pretty likely especially as the basis of this vaccine has actually been around for years.

I mean despite I'm saying I won't have it initially... Most stuff I take for chronic illnesses is off label and very new.... And considering all the side effects are serious other illnesses or death. ...I'd say most stuff medically isn't particularly safe really. But it's always a balance of risk

AliceMcK · 09/11/2020 22:18

No

Caroncanta · 09/11/2020 22:27

But it's always a balance of risk

Fair enough. I won't be having it.

iamadramallama · 09/11/2020 22:35

No. Absolutely not

squeekums · 09/11/2020 22:39

Nope

ApplesinmyPocket · 09/11/2020 22:44

Yes. Hearing this news today is surely the lift we all needed. The stock markets certainly think so.

Grin at amylou8 and "Boris's rush-job vaccine." I bet Boris would be surprised to hear he had anything to do with this!

samandpoppysmummy · 09/11/2020 22:47

Yes

squeekums · 09/11/2020 22:48

Where people are saying "oh it's been rushed through I don't trust it" they should, in my opinion be saying "this has been achieved in the most incredible speed, it's an absolute triumph of modern medicine and science...."

Well the speed and affects a fair concern. Rushed humans make mistakes and scientists can't be certain of affects from vaccine in 5, 10 years
The Aus pm has said any reactions to a corona vaccine won't be up for complaint or claims for compensation. Essentially giving a vaccine free reign to harm, no consequences.
That's dodgy and has made many here go from yes to no

LastTrainEast · 09/11/2020 22:52

I'd be happy to take it. Though despite my age I think the teachers need to get it before me. I'm mostly isolated anyway.

rorosemary · 09/11/2020 23:07

I'd wait two weeks so it's after my planned induction. I'd happily have it this second if I wasn't pregnant. I don't feel that I can make that decision for my unborn child though. It probably hasn't been tested on pregnant women. I worked for people who developed medicin and I knkw how careful they test these things. I have enough faith that it will have been tested well. Everything has side effects and I acknowledge that and am willing to take that risk at the moment. I feel that for me as a very vulnerable person the risk from Covid is greater.

BlueBlancmange · 09/11/2020 23:20

Yep

Givemeabreak88 · 09/11/2020 23:25

I will never have it.

KamalaVP · 09/11/2020 23:26

I am undecided. I have read that vaccines are produced differently and I'd be keen to know how this one is produced first. I know it is mRNA vaccine but where does the initial protein come from? I've read that the flu virus is made from eggs and some vaccines use cells from insects and some use cells from aborted foetuses. I'm sorry, I don't want to cause upset but my honest answer is that I would want to know how it is manufactured first.

ssd · 09/11/2020 23:27

For sure. I love the anti vaxxers, makes there more for the rest of us.

Caroncanta · 09/11/2020 23:35

For sure. I love the anti vaxxers, makes there more for the rest of us.

There you go then. It's a win win isn't it Smile

Madhairday · 09/11/2020 23:36

Yes. Bring it on. (CEV)

Torvean32 · 10/11/2020 00:01

I hope nobody saying no works in front line health care.

Caroncanta · 10/11/2020 00:07

I hope nobody saying no works in front line health care.

Why? Are they not allowed a choice on what should be injected into their bodies?

Strictlysilly · 10/11/2020 00:10

Yes

ineedaholidaynow · 10/11/2020 00:16

How do flu vaccines work? Aren’t they different every year, so can’t be tested over a number of years. Or are there a stock of different flu vaccines and they just use the one corresponding to the flu strain they think it will be that year.

gungholierthanthou · 10/11/2020 00:21

Absolutely

doubleshotespresso · 10/11/2020 00:31

Definitely not this soon. Vaccines require years of thorough testing, whilst this is hugely encouraging and great news of progress we all really needed to hear, I'd need to see a lot more detail on how this has been tested and what the potential side effects might be.
